Microsoft has a code name for the next version of Windows. But what is the planned delivery date for the product, as well as its successor, 'Vienna'? No one's talking, but plenty are speculating.

Will the delay in Microsoft's Windows Vista have a domino effect on other planned releases of Windows?
Partner sources close to the company said that Microsoft has sketched out plans for Windows "Fiji" (also referred to by some Microsoft watchers as Vista R2) – the version of Windows set to follow Vista -- as for Windows "Vienna," the successor to Fiji, partner sources close to the company said.

Microsoft has not shared broadly its working feature set for Fiji, according to partners contacted by Microsoft Watch. Nor have company executives talked about what's on tap for Vienna, the version of Windows formerly code-named "Blackcomb." And exactly when either Fiji or Vienna will hit is anyone's guess.

Since Microsoft announced at the end of March that Vista was running behind schedule and would not be ready to launch in time for the 2006 holiday season, Microsoft brass have gone mum about its future plans for its desktop and server Windows releases. When asked about the Windows rollout schedule, Microsoft officials decline to comment, insisting that all hands are working on fixing Vista bugs to get that product to manufacturing in the latter half of 2006.

I think Fiji will be like a 98SE or an Me, including all the thing skipping Vista, i.e. WinFS, and future versions of IE7 and WMP11. Nothing too great that you can't get for free anyway.

I'm more looking forward to Vienna, as this seems to be a bigger step forward than Vista, with the taskbar being scrapped and replaced with a revolutionary system. Vienna won't stick as the name, sounds too much like Vista. I think we should do version or year names, i.e. Win7, or Win2010

Vista was just a bad name period.

Vienna is juat a code-name, that replaced a code-name. So ofcourse it isn't going to stick.

and replaced with a revolutionary system.

I expect it to be similar to OSX's dashboard so a new system yes but revolutionary I dont think so

I strongly disagree with Vienna being a bigger step forward than Vista. From the usability standpoint definately, but from the core technologies, I think/hope Vista will prevent the need for any major core updates for a long time.

I thought first Vienna was the successor of Vista no? But if it's going to be a Vista R2 then you can't really say it's a different OS version. More like Vista how it should have been in the beginning.

Vista's biggest change is the platform upgrade to WinFX. Its not something the users see, but it is the biggest reason for all the delays. The next version, Fiji, will not have any platform upgrades, it will all be targeted at end-user enhancements. One person said it will be Vista the way Vista should have been; perhaps not too far from the truth. I expect it to be to Vista what XP was to 2000.

I wish Microsoft would forget about what they'll be doing after Vista and hurry up and finish Vista now. No wonder Vista is so late - Microsoft are too busy day dreaming about the future.

clue train: not thinking about the future is what caused vista's delay

Fiji = long way away, sounds nice, nice pics, but you'll spend a lot of money and end up with the squirts.

So...whats with all the names.... First Blackcomb became Vienna and now something new like VistaR2 comes up !!! Its gonna b called "Fiji".... I just hope MS gets quicker in the release cycles just like Apple does with OSX.

Hope MS learns something more from its competitor, Apple. Anyways, personally I think Vista was a bad name (using years was better), but then who cares, like that gr8 English poet Shakes' said, "Whats in a name??"

It was more like Blackcomb became Longhorn. Longhorn was originally going to be just an XP R2 (or 2000 R3 if you will) and Blackcomb was to be the next major version. As Longhorn began to slip past the early 2004 goal they changed it from a point release to a major version; at that time the name Blackcomb died (from my point of view), because Longhorn had become what Blackcomb was to be.

Vista is about 2-3 years late, no question about that, but I expect this R2 (or version 6.1 for those who still follow the version numbers) to come 18-24 months after Vista. Why? Because it will be nothing more then a refresh of Vista. I'm sure there will be a lot of nice enhancements, but it will not be changing any of the things that have delayed Vista so much (WinFX).

I am not a big fan of Apple's cycle. They release a new point release about every 18 months but don't do major upgrades very often at all; what that means is that each point release becomes major in its own little ways. The problem is that you have to shell out $129 bucks every 18 months or you are not current anymore. With Microsoft you get a major version every 4-5 years (yeah Vista is 7 years after 2000, but like I said, its late), and a point release about 18-24 months after each major. The nice thing about that type of cycle is that the point release is generally optional; you still have good support if you leap-frog. Not so with Apple. Within months of a new version being released, everything they offer starts requiring the latest version.

If I wasn’t so eager to replace my 5 year old XP OS and I wasn’t such a sucker for having the latest software I would probably skip Vista and wait for this refresh.

But really if we dont like the latest release from any company...be it Apple or MS... why take it ?? Its definately a choice thats always there (And really u can run older versions pretty well until u need one feature, unless we wanna brag that I always own the latest fot everything out there !!!!!! I agree with you that a 18month cycle mayb too fast for many people including me coz...shelling out cash for stuff that I dont need doesnt make sense, but then what i meant with the Apple example was that they hit deadlines really well... The features they promise r nearl exactly there each time, and Im a fan of such accurate goal setting!!

Mayb thats y people love the iPod and iTunes!! now....I want Apple to release OSX for my x86 CPU, coz...I like building my own machines rather than buy Apple's...coz...I think they r a little overpriced @$$$@

Why would the client get an R2?
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by sphbecker on 13 Apr 2006 - 15:49
Um I don't know, why did Windows 2000 get its R2? I know XP wasn't called that at the time, but that is basically what it was; a refresh of 2000 with a few minor tweaks.

Billions of dollars and they can't hire someone with an imagination to think up cool sounding names for there Windows version.
Quote this comment #13.1 Posted by osirisX on 14 Apr 2006 - 04:23
They are code-names, they don't matter.
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #14 Posted by obsolete_power on 14 Apr 2006 - 04:35
Why the hell are Microsoft worrying about successors to Vista when Vista is approximately a year from release anyway??
Quote this comment #14.1 Posted by osirisX on 14 Apr 2006 - 07:52
They have learnt to plan ahead, so they don't end up with the mess that was Vista.
