- Apple is truly crazy if they think anyone is going to spend $3200+ CDN on a laptop :|
What the hell are they thinking?

- They're thinking what Toshiba is thinking with its Qosmio line:
There are people out there who will spend whatever possible to get the most expensive laptop just because it is the most expensive laptop. That must mean that it's the best one they're ever going to find.

- i agree that it is very expensive, but remeber, apple isnt known for selling inexpensive products, as well, this is their flagship laptop
the same person that buys a luxury car, sports car, or any other car that does more than point A-B driving will desire such laptop. -

- If you want something cheaper, configure a cheaper one on dell.ca with only the features you care about. But if you want a laptop with comparable hardware and software, then you would pay more from any other manufacturer. It may have been true in the past that Apple prices were out of line but now they are midrange.
Those dell deals are bare bones with combodrives, smaller HD, and a Home edition OS with no software for multimedia creation. Granted, people looking solely for a business laptop only will probably be better served with a dell but people who want a personal laptop or those involved in video production on the road would seriously consider one of the MBP models. -

- This is a very high-end laptop. I spent about $2,900 on my last Dell laptop.

- sphbecker is right. If you guys want a cheaper laptop from Apple with intel, you will have to wait for the replacement of the iBooks which should be here within a couple months. Just don't expect them to be massive gaming performers. They will probably go with the 1.66 Ghz Core Duo or a fast Core Solo and either integrated gfx with dedicated memory or X1300 GPU with dedicated memory.

- Aww man, forget about this - I'll never afford it. The only announcement I'm waiting for is the "MacBook" line (the iBook replacements). I'd like to get my hands on one before the next school year starts.

- ......and this is the Pro product for..professionals!
-
#5 Posted by redmosquito on 24 Apr 2006 - 17:24
- ^excactly.
its for professionals (only). i can tell you, a 17" powerbook is the best you can have when youre dealing with photography. and so does the macbook pro be.
its not like having a ferrari which does nothing but be lound, ugly and overprized imho, if you spend your money on a macbook pro, wheather the 15" or the 17" you really GOT the money and you need a real working-machine that gives you what you need.
actually, i dont think apple did a good job with releasing the pro-line first, because everyone might think that the macbook pro is the standart-line notebook and should be affordable for everyone. but thats not the case, actually.
the addition "pro" implicates that infact.
im looking forward to seeing the macbooks (nonpro), which will be great for students and people who want a good looking (and i think it will be good looking) friend for everyday use.

- if Apple had released the iBook updates first, many less people would have gone for the MacBook Pro. Also, the PowerBook line wasn't exactly powerful, with outdated G4's and video cards.. atleast with the current iBooks you can still do word processing and surf the word without a hitch.
-

- It makes perfect sense for Apple to have released the MacBook Pro before the MacBook. If they hadn't, the MacBooks would have probably outperformed the G4 PowerBooks! That would have killed any possible remaining sales of the PowerBooks immediately.

- Apple caters to a particular segment of the computer using population who are ready and willing to pay for higher-end products. The everyone-and-their-dog market, especially with this line of laptops is neither expected nor necessarily included.
We all need to accept and live with that reality.

- For me this laptop would be a gimmick because if I were to spend money on it, it would be a waste, for me. It doesn't change the fact that I would WANT one but since I am a student and money doesn't grow on trees (yet
) I am fine with my 14" iBook G4

- They must have been off their tits when they priced this up. What a rip!
-
#9.1 Posted by roadwarrior on 25 Apr 2006 - 19:33
- Price out anyone else's laptop with exactly the same features and get back to me.

- 3 200$ pour un ordinateur portable à 17 pouces? Je ne pense pas! De même, j'aime mon iBook G4 puis je n'aurai aucun besoin d'acheter un ordinateur pour quelques ans!

- there should be a rule on Neowin. If you want to complain about Apple's computer pricing, you have to submit a comparably spec'd computer by a reputable OEM such as Dell, Toshiba, Gateway, etc.
Let's take Dell.
A brief rundown of the Macbook Pro 17":
- 2.16Ghz Core Duo
- 1GB 667 DDR2
- 120GB 5400RPM HDD
- 256MB GDDR3 PCI-Express ATi Mobility Radeon X1600
- 8x DVD-RW/CDRW
- remote
- web cam
- 802.11g
- bluetooth
- illuminated keyboard
- 1" thick, 6.8lb
- $2799
A brief rundown of the comparably spec'd Dell XPS M1710
- 2.0Ghz Core Duo
- 1GB 667 DDR2
- 100GB 7200RPM HDD
- 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GTX
- 8x DVD-RW/CDRW
- no remote
- no web
- 802.11g
- bluetooth
- (can't find dimensions or weight)
- $3,549
So you get a slower processor, faster HDD, less HDD capacity, more video memory, no remote, no web cam, and it costs $750 more.
Just remember, when you complain about Apple being overpriced, all you're complaining about is that you don't want what Apple puts in their computers. If you did, then the price would be completely justified. -

- I'm guessing you're an apple fanboy judging by the fact that you picked the most expensive gaming laptop on dells website, if you fairly price one...
Dell Inspiron E1705 Customized:
- 17"
- 2.0GHz Core Duo
- 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 667MHz
- 120GB 5400RPM HDD
- 256MB NVIDA® GeForce™ Go 7800
- 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write
- Media Remote Control
- No Webcam
- 802.11g
- bluetooth
- 2 Year Warranty (compaired to apple 90 day or 1 year depending on where you get it)
$1995 shipped
$2,235 shipped if you want to upgrade the processor to the 2.16GHz Core Duo -

- James123, I'll guessing you have too much time on your hands to find coupons. I also think you must pirate software if you place no value on the software bundled with a computer. I assume that you are choosing XP Home rather than either Media Center or XP Pro? Ok, choose two 512MB so-dimms instead of one 1GB stick for the MBP and you can knock off a hundred bucks off the base price. If you are going to choose a crippled OS like Home edition, I think it is fair to choose the cheaper ram configuration on the MBP to even things out.
Really, you hardware fanboys don't seem to get the value of software bundled with a computer and that you would have to spend extra on the dell to get back that functionality. With iLife bundled, I can start editing High Def video without purchasing extra software or having to hunt around the net for software.
Apple has the added advantage of providing you with the ability to buy from a brick and mortar store in your home town for the same price as you would get online regardless of whether it is an Apple store or an authorized reseller. You cannot get that with Dell. -

- aristotle-dude:Quote - aristotle-dudeI'll guessing you have too much time on your hands to find coupons. There were no coupons used there thank you very much, if I wanted to use a coupon there could have been another $250 off the dells price, but I didn't seeing as I was being "fair".Quote - aristotle-dudeI also think you must pirate software if you place no value on the software bundled with a computer.I don't have a single piece of pirate software, if you add up the value of the software bundle included with the Dell is comes to the same if not more then that included with the macbook (Value wise, perhaps not quality)Quote - aristotle-dudeI assume that you are choosing XP Home rather than either Media Center or XP ProNo, It was the Media Center version actually.Quote - aristotle-dudeOk, choose two 512MB so-dimms instead of one 1GB stick for the MBP and you can knock off a hundred bucks off the base price. You can choose between 1x1GB or 2x512MB for the same price on the Dell configuration, I only used that one because it was selected by default.
Honestly... If you're going to disagree with everything and accuse me of things such as pirating software which I certainly do NOT support at least get your facts straight first.
BTW: I don't have anything against apple/macs I do own a MacBook 15" the extra cost was justified for me because now I don't have to carry around a Windows laptop + iBook for testing web development and libraries.

- Well...does that run OS X? thought not. With Apple you don't just pay for the h/w. You're also paying for the quality and the ability to run their OS.
