As most people will of heard, Windows Vista build 5365 was released to testers on Saturday, this build has not appeared on MSDN yet and has been tagged as an internal, so the chances of it being posted there are slim.

Initial reports are good, this build appears to be more stable and the dreaded UAP (User Account Protection) behavior has changed, allowing more simple tasks to be done without having to click away 3 different dialogs. There are a few reviews on the web, I've linked to one which I thought was quite good.

"After many falsepieces of information over the last few days regarding vista plus theanger being expressed by many Vista beta testers, Microsoft havefinally released what everyone has been waiting for, a new build. Itcomes in the shape of 5365, the same build Bill Gates showed off inJapan with screenshots being posted on WinFuture.de. I have finally gotaround to downloading and installing the latest vista build. In thisreview I will look at what has changed the improvements and anythingelse I feel like mentioning." Glad they have altered that bloody UAP

That was enough to drive any sane person crazy!

It's even more annoying now. It switches screenmode every time it pops up (and it still pops up all the time).

Wow Vista looks fantastic.

i know my system specs are crap and iam not worried about Glas/AERO affects.

Yes you will, but without glass, as you already stated.

Will I have glass with a radeon 9600?
Quote this comment #2.3 Posted by Brandon Live on 24 Apr 2006 - 16:54
Yes a 9600 should be able to do it no problem

looks good but the panels like above where the icons are on a transparent background are stupid. The other site (non paul thurott one) has a similar shot but due to it being a dark background you can hardly read the text. Pics like this show when transparencies is taken too far.

Still looks pretty nice in most cases.

The UI looks better at higher resolution. I'm glad people have begun to stop taking screenshots of one huge window covering the entire screen on a very low resolution display. Even OSX looks much goofier on a very low resolution display, because all you notice are the jelly buttons and candy scroll bars.

And I for one love the transparent all glass panels, but yes, there should be an option to show as white or black text depending on background. Many documents, web pages, etc. do this with the (Auto) font color setting.

Vista has been getting "very significantly" better with every new release, and that means it feels tighter, the UI more solid/polished and importantly and suprisingly faster.

Its still missing driver support in important areas however (my RAID Controller for example) - and why has my computer rating gone from 5 -> 1?

Its also obvious that the behavior of UAP will be changed and refined. Theres a useful article on WindowsDevCenter: http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/lpt/a/6538

It's called UAC now. Someone at MS either has a sense of humor, or has never played Doom.

It is indeed looking quite nice and running a lot better; the UAP has also changed its behavior; it ONLY asks you when you are going to do configuration changes or if you are going to install/unistall applications, In my opinion that's where it needs to prompt, people complaining about this don't realize that the prompts will happen a lot the first few days after you install Windows because you have LOTS of things to install and tweak; once you have everything set the way y ouwant it you should only see the UAP promts sporadically, I'm sure its behavior will impove even more in the upcoming builds, I heard that in the future people will be able to "bless" some applications or approve some changes permanently so you are not asked about these again.

Overall performance & stability has increased greately and the GUI is looking quite nice.

heh ... its getting better i can see.

i really wish that they released a sort of public preview. maybe a 30 day limited one or something. Probably won't happen though. I have checked the compatibility of an earlier build (5342) and some old hardware (soundstorm for example) is not supported :/

Welcome to OSX VISTA. I love Microsoft but I don't really want my windows to start looking like a mac. Most of the "advancements" where directly copied from Apple. Where has all the innovation gone? Microsoft please start working on something radically different I'm getting sick of these add-ins to Windows 2000.
Quote this comment #14.1 Posted by Brandon Live on 24 Apr 2006 - 16:56
Huh? Can you even name one thing taken from OS X? Other than fancier min/max effects and shadows, which didn't originate on the Mac in the first place.

Please don't feed the troll. He still thinks Apple invented the windowing GUI. He is therefore beyond educatable and should be put to sleep, digitally speaking.

Actually, look at the Windows Calendar and then look at iCal. It is almost an exact copy.

There are other places as well which are "photocopied".

"Actually, look at the Windows Calendar and then look at iCal. It is almost an exact copy."

The only resemblances I see I could would not have come up with a different design if I had never seen either. Plus, Outlook has had a calender app from day one, and predates iCal by years.

Now, this story is a little old by now. And so considering the way Neowin works, this comment probably isn't going to be read. But here's my problem with Vista,

I don't see a single, slight bit of "innovation" in this product. Do I see a copy of OS X's visual style? Absolutely. Do I see a clone of Konfabulator, only bound to use the god-awful IE rendering engine instead of Gecko or Webkit? Seems so.

Do I see Google Desktop Search? Yes. There is is, right in the start menu.

But do I see anything at all that hasn't been done before? No.

Do I see a visual style that's cool looking, yet stupid? Yes. Aside from the red X mark in the corner, how am I supposed to tell which window is the frontmost? How the hell am I supposed to click that teeny, weird shaped X button? Granted, XP's theme looked like Fisher Price decided to make an operaing system, but at least the start button and window close buttons were easy to hit.

What the hell is the point of Flip 3D? Sure, it's eye candy, but Apple's Expose was, and still is, incredibly useful. I don't see any advantage if normal alt-tab takes significantly less time. I don't see the benefit of adding thumbnails to alt-tab either, as I usually don't spend much time staring at that box.

I mean, honestly. What justifies the cost of upgrading to Vista? XP was a great improvement in terms of performance, but with Vista, I can smell the bloat boat from a mile away.

You know, I'm really disappointed. Microsoft is freaking rich! The whole idea with achievements and Xbox Live made the Xbox 360 a downright awesome product, but Windows just seems to be a terribly designed POS that gets worse with each iteration. Same with Office.

Microsoft, if Apple licenses Mac OS, or Ubuntu gets, you know, drivers and codec support, GIVE ME A REASON TO USE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM. If you don't watch out, your cash cow is at stake.

Ok tapo you've got some valid points but then again most OS new features from an end user's perspective for a long while have been due to integration of existing technologies into them. Whether this is OSX or Vista.

Yes we can be extremely disapointed that it took MS such a long time to arrive to this point and yes there are still a lot of little usability things that need to be worked out (such as topmost window, provide UI consistency throughout OS) but it's no reason to be so mad really.

The Windoze apologists are in denial about Vista's obvious debt to OS X. That's why anyone who points out the obvious is instantly labelled a troll. They're as bad as Mac zealots, really.

What will Vista be like on this:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
nVidia Geforce 6200 AGP8X
1GB RAM

I want Glass

Screenies look nice

Oh, and what will it be like on:

Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz
nVidia GeForce FX5200
640MB RAM

Glass isn't so important for the second
Quote this comment #15.1 Posted by Danrarbc641 on 24 Apr 2006 - 21:26
Glass will run on the first, and if the second is an AGP8x card it'll probably run there too.

Sorry, but IMO those combination of colors look awfull. I really hope there is at least an alternative theme.
Quote this comment #20.1 Posted by toadeater on 24 Apr 2006 - 23:30
The color gradients look horrible. There's also too many conflicting colors onscreen at once. Red and green, plus shiny metal, light blue glow effects and transparency on top? That's pretty bad. The different GUI parts don't really match.

I agree. There have been signs of refinement and since it is a beta, hopefully they're just testing how people will react to the design elements. Hopefully it will be a bit more smooth when released.

If I expand the ram to 1 gig, what would vista be like on this system?

eMachines D6417
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2 ghz
512MB
ATi Radeon Xpress Graphics 200 (64MB Shared, up to 128MB)

Meh now all vista needs now is a widget that shows a dancing monkey clapping his hands together, with bill gates's face imprinted into the monkey's left hand.

Don'T try to understand, it's just a funny I made up.

Too much transparency for the sake of it, just because they can!!! Apple went through that phase (though not as extreme) and thankfully got over it. Hopefully MS will too.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #24 Posted by Sp3ctranova on 27 Apr 2006 - 20:43
I agree, the glass effect is cool...but it's really hard sometimes to tell which windows are where. The differences between windows which are on lower layers and the window on the top are very subtle, making it somewhat difficult to tell which windows are where. It's not a huge issue...I guess I'm just used to XP where background windows gray out considerably...but it would be nice if there was more distinction. Maybe the window borders go completely transparent when they're not active? Or change to some darker color?

I'm surprised Vista ran as well as it did on my old Nvidia go5100. All the other builds I've trued complained a lot...5308 did glass with some hacks, but it was unstable as hell. Maybe there's hope that this old dog can learn a few new tricks after all.
But we'll have to see how far Microsoft goes with DRM in Vista--that could cripple it considerably.
