UK Broadband ISP, Plusnet, has reacted to Talk Talk's offer of Free Broadband by announcing it's own range of pick'n'mix calls, line rental and broadband packages.

From July, punters of the Sheffield based plc will be able to subscribe to a package which includes your BT line rental from £11/month - so you need not pay a BT Bill ever again. The bundlen also includes 240 minutes of anytime UK landline calls and, unlike Talk Talk's offering, is based on a flexible 1 month contract. Talk Talk asks punters to signup for 18 months.

Commenting on the new offering, Chief Exec Lee Strafford said :

"Broadband customers have demonstrated the demand for voice services to be bundled with their broadband service but have hitherto been put off by long term commitments and product offerings that are restrictive in terms of choice".

Available at all BT exchanges, Basic Broadband upto 8mb can be bolted on for just £9.99, making the package £20.99; a competitive offering when you consider Talk Talk's package of the same price is only available at a Talk Talk unbundled exchange, currently few and far between.

Higher call allowances are available for £15/month and customers will be able to pick and choose between any of Plusnet's current and future broadband packages to bundle with the new service.

This is all based on BT's new Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) service which allows providers to integrate line rental into their calls packages making it easier for the customer to deal with just one company for all the communications needs.

With Talk Talk sales five times higher than predicted - and the launch of these Plusnet bundled products - it seems the UK is moving further towards one unified company to provide homes with the full package of calls, line rental and broadband.

Ouch! PlusNet's "Broadband Basic" service includes just 50MB of bandwidth per month! 22p per MB thereafter!
TalkTalk's service includes 40GB of usage, but only in LLU areas.

Decimal in wrong place - 0.22P (£0.0022)

its not 22p there after. Go read it again.
and its about £2.25ish/GB
or whateva that works out as per MB

2ndly their not directly competeing with talk talk. There going after a different market. The Ultra Low end market. talk talk are not.

3rdly 50MB can be used in background noise easily over a month of very very light usage.

Plusnet are a complete shambles. They continually reduce usage limts and add more shaping so the service continuall gets slower. service levers are terrible. I recommend everyone to stay far far away. All my referals have now moved out. Once great isp is no longer

tbh i dont think this deserves front page news at all.

This could be the start of broader competition and the merging of voice and data services - surely that has to be worthy of a spot on the front page - no matter which company launches it and which part of the market they are aiming at...

Bulls**t.

It's another Plusnet obfuscusciation.

The price for a WLR line is only £8.74

And by routing them through any provider other than BT will give you 240mins for around £1.

Even with BT at 1p per min it would only be £11.14.

why use the BT logo... surely plusnets would be more appropriate

i would also like to point out talk talk's 'free' broadband is only for those on an LLU exchange, which is so very few atm. Everyone else will have to pay some £20 per month (about the same as the rest of the market maybe a bit more for 40GB of bandwidth) to get it.

Its not revolutionary and i would prefer better service, speed and contention over cheaper and cheaper prices.

It should be noted that you can mix and match any of PN's current broadband products with the line rental offerings. So Broadband Premier + Anytime package would be £32.99/month inclusive of line rental. Not bad I don't think - and a product better than Talk Talk.

How can you compare +net to Talktalk and have +net come out on top?

Plusnet are quite possibly the most blatant liars, and/or spindoctors I have EVER seen in UK internet history.

They sell a product with now has (I believe) 10gb of "clean" allowance per month, which it's anything BUT clean.

It's prioritised first and then shaped.

So much for clean allowance.

God I hope these f***wits get buried by OFCOM or the courts, they deserve no more.

Well all I can say is watch this space, because now one set of companies has started to battle, I reckon it won't be long before we have Telewest and BT battling. (Now that should be interesting ^_^ )

Telewest & BT? Don't you mean Virgin Vs BT?

Now that Telewest is owned by NTL: watch out for the Virgin and BT battle (as soon as the Virgin Mobile buy out is complete NTL: have rights to the Virgin name and will probably rename all the companies to one brand).

Either way, yes it should be very interesting and there will be some ISPs / telcos that don't survive just like when the system was opened up to other call providers. Plusnet will have to keep with the others after being this early to market - if everyone else has higher / no caps who's going to stick with them (only a 1 month contract)

Plusnet have dropped servely in quality over the past year in terms of bandwidth usage and traffic management, but if your already on PlusNet, the idea world is upon us, just think I NEVER have to give BT anymore money. That alone would be a sole reason for signing up with PlusNet, if you cannot get Cable in your area.

PlusNet are closely becoming a big ISP to the likes of BT, AOL, Wannadoo, when that time comes I will certainly jump ship to a less in your face ISP, until that time comes, PlusNet are a very good ISP. Very little down time, and their features are second to none. Scheduling your downloads to off-peak times is a step in the right direction to not get caught out by their FUP.

It's going to be good for the consumer at the end of the day And one bill is more convenient i reckon.
