Even though HD-DVD are titles already trickling on to store shelves, titles on the rival Blu-ray format won't be available until the end of June. The reason for the holdup? Samsung, manufacturer of the first commercially available Blu-ray player, says that its Blu-ray units won't be on store shelves until June 25th. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Benjamin Feingold said that their first Blu-ray titles will be ready on May 23rd as planned, but at the urging of their retailers and hardware partners they have agreed to hold back on their release for a month in order to coincide with the availability of the players.

The first Blu-ray titles slated for release on June 20th are "Underworld Evolution" (arriving the same day as the DVD), "50 First Dates," "The Fifth Element," "Hitch," "House of Flying Daggers," "A Knight's Tale," "The Last Waltz," "Resident Evil Apocalypse" and "XXX."

now why would i buy a disc that i cant even play yet? i think i'll wait until i have a player before i'd buy the disc. personally, i'd wait a week or 2 before the players were released to put out the discs

The Fifth Element is the best title there.

i'll be snatching that one up.

exactly! (as in it's the best title, but i wont be buying anything related to blu-ray/hd-dvd anytime soon though) ... i still prefer XviD as the video format of choice for watching movies myself as it's hard to beat for it's all around quality/file size ... there nice if u got a moded xbox to watch them through XBMC (XBox Media Center)

but then again i dont see either blu-ray or hd-dvd taking over the standard of DVD anytime soon since DVD already established itself as the new standard worldwide for entertainment and i dont think people are going to want to "buy" another format when dvd just started to get really popular in the last 4ish years or so.

so unless blu-ray or hd-dvd is WAY superior to standard dvd i doubt the "average joe" will care about them.

but we will just have to sit back and see what happends

No. The Fifth Element is overrated. Check out House of Flying Daggers instead. It's an awsome movie. That would probably be the only disc I'd buy if I had to choose.

For me it's HD-DVD so far, because it's got The Last Samurai

That movie is 100% ownage. However, at the end of the day, the up-scaling DVD player wins

All Warner titles, including The Last Samurai will be available on Blu-ray Disc.

Warner has said it will not favor one format over the other.

I'll just sit on the side lines at this point and let these two money hungry camps battle it out. When we have a clear winner, I'll jump aboard and upgrade then.

we really need dual format drives... this one movie is one one format and another is only on the other stuff has got to stop...

neufuse -- Check out what LG is doing, they're already on it
#8.1 PeterTHX on 04 May 2006 - 22:58
Panasonic has denied anyone a Blu-ray license for a dual-format player.

LG has backed off and they have announced their Blu-ray *only* player will arrive this summer.

downloading a blu-ray ISO file will be a pain in the ass ^^; .... <== I have for seen the future

I used to say the same thing about DVD images.

Broadband speeds are increasing, fortunately.
Plus the burners will be out around the same time as the players.
It was years before DVD burners became standard equipment on PCs.

I bought my first DVD in Nov. of 1997, but didn't own a player until Feb. of 1998. I used to play Twister and a few others on the players at work.

Aww bad selection of movies. Oh well, go Blu-ray. I would really like for this war to finish. I don't really care who wins, but Blu-ray looks and feels so much better than HD-DVD.

www.thedigitalbits.com has a more accurate release schedule

Columbia (Sony) Blu-ray Discs:
6/6 - Underworld: Evolution (day and date)
6/20 - 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, A Knight's Tale, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, xXx (delayed from 5/23)
6/27 - Ultraviolet (day and date), Kung Fu Hustle, Legends of the Fall, Stealth, S.W.A.T. (delayed from 6/13)

MGM Blu-ray Discs:
6/20 - The Last Waltz (delayed from 5/23)
6/27 - Robocop, Species, The Terminator (delayed from 6/13)

A far better selection than the *three* that were available for HD DVD.
Also read Bill Hunt's "experience" with the Toshiba.

Then comes November 7th...format war? What format war?

I can't believe there are two high-definition formats, as well as the older DVD format. When people go to the supermarkets to buy a film, what will they do? 99% of the people won't even know the difference!

This site has a ton of information about Blu Ray and Hd Dvd media...they're also giving away free movies:
