While Google has grabbed an early lead in search and Internet advertising, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates pledged on Wednesday that his company would "keep them honest."

Speaking to a crowd of MSN's largest advertisers, Gates said that Microsoft would prefer not to be coming from behind. "For Microsoft, we always want to be in the lead, making the breakthroughs," Gates said. But, in an on stage interview with ad executives and talk show host Donny Deutsch, Gates conceded that the company has made mistakes, including in some cases picking the wrong people to lead certain efforts.

He also gave credit to his rival, saying Google has "done a great job on search and what they've done with advertising." But, he reiterated his position that search today is still too much of a treasure hunt and promised that better things are in store. "We will keep them honest, in the sense of being able to do better in a number of areas," Gates said.

Wow. That is probably one of the most ironic statements I've read thus far this year.

Further irony;

Quote -
Gates conceded that the company has made mistakes, including in some cases picking the wrong people to lead certain efforts.

Like...when Gates stepped down as CEO in 2000, to become the Chief Software Architect, focusing on `technologies of the future'...

...technologies like Vista..? LOL

#1.2 markjensen on 04 May 2006 - 16:27
It would be like a headline of "Enron to keep Worldcom Honest"
#1.3 machorro on 04 May 2006 - 16:39
we have to thank MS for doing us a big favor that comes from the bottom of their hearts [/sarcasm]

Is this the face of a dishonest man? C'mon...he looks like an angel.
#1.5 lbmouse on 04 May 2006 - 16:43
...or like saying "Firefox keeps IE Honest". Seriously though, competition does bring out the best in *some* companies. Companies like MS thrive on the "Innovation through Imitation and Intimidation" philosophy.

@lucifuge: Why did you post that picture? There's nothing about Kermit the Frog in the article...

So are they still planning on adding an msn search box in the new IE browser?
#3.1 Stunna on 04 May 2006 - 17:04
I hope so
#3.2 lucifuge on 04 May 2006 - 17:07
Wouldn't it be Live search, since MSN is dying?
#3.3 Munkyman on 05 May 2006 - 07:44
Its called rebranding
#3.4 Boono on 05 May 2006 - 12:27
On the subject of "keeping honest": will they add an option to select different search engines during install?
#4 Morphie on 04 May 2006 - 17:37
M$ keeping someone else honest. That makes me laugh. Forever.

And who will keep MS honest?

Thats a sensative subject, i think on first install of IE7 you should be asked which search provider the software should use otherwise 90% of the people who use the software wont know how to set it to google. And as Live looks so much like google now wont even know there not using google.

And im not a google fan boy. what do other neowinians think?
#8.1 EnzoFX on 04 May 2006 - 18:16
but those people who dont know how to set it to google, frankly dont care what search engine they use. And I wonder if they would have any difficulty deciding when they got a popup from IE7 asking them what search engine they would like to use. would they then just pick one randomly?
#8.2 Banzai on 04 May 2006 - 22:15
I take your point, i just think it pays into Microsoft’s hands very well and could risk taking business way from google unfairly. For example my mum is quite knowledge of computers, however she’s not one to "fiddle" so if the search engine is different than what she used before she wont bother and look how to change things..

Have to agree with EnzoFX

Not that hard to reset the default IE7 search engine to Google, Ask, Yahoo etc contrary to some reports! Then again it's not as if Firefox asks you what search engine you want on install?

whats most ironic is those who diss and bitch at MS, use windows.. if they as a company hack you off so much their are other options out their

disclaimer: I use or test at some point all browsers and or OS's so have no preference at all they all have good and bad points about them.
#9.1 Banzai on 04 May 2006 - 22:17
Firefox doesn’t come with the OS most users who install and run firefox and more than capable of changing advance features like this. However if Microsoft was to ask users which search engine to install i would agree that firefox should do this to in fairness
#9.2 XerXis on 05 May 2006 - 06:34
a lot of linux distro's come with firefox, like ubuntu
#10 SniperX on 04 May 2006 - 18:47
This has to be one of the most irony filled and just completely ridiculous things that the MS PR machine has ever come out with.

live looks like google now? are you smoking something. google is the plainest site i have ever seen and live has widgets, bookmarks and many other things you can do to design it.
#11.1 advancedboy on 04 May 2006 - 20:19
you mean like Google Personal Homepage?

www.google.com/ig
#11.2 Chugworth on 05 May 2006 - 12:40
Exactly. I have been using Google Personal for a while now, but I have recently switched over to Live. Live is much more powerful than Google Personal.
#12 g_denne on 04 May 2006 - 20:49
"MS want to be making breakthroughs"...

Gates is on drugs if he thinks MS make breakthroughs.
#13 netizen on 04 May 2006 - 22:13
Fair play to them. If they really can do some things better than Google, why not give it a try prove the fanboys wrong/right?

Why is everyone giving MS such flack? They are admitting they've made some mistakes and are trying to make sure there is constant innovation in the field. Now we get flocks of sheep coming out of the woodworks to slam on MS.

I say: More power to them. If they want to keep pushing Google to improve, I say let them.
#14.1 SecretAgentMan on 05 May 2006 - 02:26
Well said.
#14.2 Rodrigo on 05 May 2006 - 03:32
Because is the cool thing to do these days.

Bash Microsoft and think you are cool. All I see is senseless bashing and trolling.
#14.3 werejag on 05 May 2006 - 12:58
hardly the case but nothing that can be said will change your diluted minds.

microsoft didnt and cant push anyone to improve.

the motto of microsoft is why innovate when you can renovate.
#14.4 SecretAgentMan on 06 May 2006 - 01:07
Yawn, please try again when you have a clue.

Microsoft will keep Google honest? I thought it was the other way around.
(1 reply) #16 xorian on 05 May 2006 - 06:29
Funny, Microsoft can seriously slap Google in the face, by their search bar in the new IE7.. Users will quickly be used to use that search bar instead of installing Google's toolbar, or surfing to google.com, giving Microsoft a large market share in advertising online.
#16.1 werejag on 05 May 2006 - 12:59
funny how people still wont use a horrible seach engine like msn search
(2 replies) #17 locke on 05 May 2006 - 07:05
microsoft can block google.com from being accessed using hardcoded restrictions in either ie7 or vista, but they might get sued
#17.1 Chugworth on 05 May 2006 - 12:51
lol

I have made similar comments in the past about blocking Netscape or Real Player. Windows is their operating system and they can design it how they want it. If they do something the consumers don't like, they will hear from them. It's not the government's business to interfere with how they design their product.
#17.2 werejag on 05 May 2006 - 13:03
yeah they could try to use anti competition tatics but it will cost microsoft dearly. microsoft might want to but they know they would become broken up into small companies in a heart beat or lose major money in court.

microsoft knows when it doesnt have a chance. this is a losing battle for them
#18 Simon Thulbourn on 05 May 2006 - 07:56
mmm Crooks keeping another company honest?

Is this like when schools take kids to prison to scare them into being good?
