US Mac Users Recieve Best Tech Support

Computer manufacturer's free technical support systems seem to be failing US customers, according to a new report, but Mac users get a slightly better deal, it claims.

The Consumer Reports National Research Center found that just 55 per cent of consumers who contacted technical support had their problem solved. The data comes from surveys of 20,000 users with computer problems in the US.

These users revealed that most manufacturers provided "dismal" free tech support with two exceptions: "Apple's support for desktops and laptops and IBM (Lenovo) for laptops. Apple solved 76 per cent of survey respondents' problems, and IBM (Lenovo) solved 64 per cent."

In a name and shame game, the report points out that Compaq's free tech support solved just 38 per cent of desktop problems for survey respondents making it "among the worst free tech support programs".

Apple's tech support is also among the least-used tech support systems out there. Always a good sign.

least used in terms of total numbers, or rather the ratio of customers to customer support requests?

My guess is ratio. I've got a Mac mini and an iBook and I've never had trouble with them. Same with all the computers I worked with when I T.A.ed for my high school multimedia teacher. Always solid performance from my experience.

Mac's tech support was as bad as Dells for me. Go figure how they got that out of it.

I wouldn't call any of the tech support "free." It is factored into the cost of the computer. If it were free, I would be able to call Apple tech support on problems with my IBM Thinkpad

i don't think you would get very far asking for tech support for your IBM

However apple are very good with their support and usually it is free. I don't know what it's like in the states, but here in the UK you can make a free appointment with any of UK Stores and get an expert (from the genius bar) to try and help with a problem, help with installing some new hardware or software, help with your iPod really anything to do with apple. And from what ive seen that seems to be across the board with the latest computers and iPod's to older versions.

Usually the only time money will come into it, is when you need something replacing and you haven't got warranty or pro care.

I don't know of many other company's which do this for there customers.

Well I just had to call them yesterday to get a problem with my PowerBook fixed and I have to say they were very good when I called them. The person on the other side spoke perfect fluent english (quite a surprise after dealing with Palm and Sony's tech support where their people could barely speak english), were very nice and curdious, and didn't waste my time with stupidity that can't possibly solve my problem (for instance when my hard drive on one of my VAIO laptops was giving the click of dead Sony's tech wanted me to run disk defragmenter when the thing couldn't even boot since it was dead).

So I'd certainly give their support a few points.

Hmm. Macworld UK reporting that Apple US provide the best support.

How does Apple UK support compare?

It took Apple two months to sort out a .Mac issue my company was having. Their .Mac support is entirely email based. They would not respond for several weeks until I sent an email reminding them of how upset my boss was.
