Microsoft had planned to ship a variant of Windows Vista build 5381 as Beta 2, the version that the company will be delivering to millions of consumers later this month. However, problems with build 5381 have changed those plans somewhat, along with the schedule for getting Beta 2 into the hands of users. Last weekend, Microsoft surprisingly issued a variant of build 5381 to testers after previously noting that it wouldn't ship any more interim builds before Beta 2.

Now, Microsoft plans to release a DVD of Vista Beta 2 and Office 2007 Beta 2 to attendees of the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. (WinHEC) on May 23. Meanwhile, users who wish to obtain a DVD version of Beta 2 via the company's public Web site will have to wait until May 27.

So, are these going to be public betas on May 27 or still restricted to official testers?

Cool so Beta2 is going to be Public, means there should be lots more support out there and more effort from companies to put out some drivers (like ATI have). Infact the X1900 XTX box has "Vista Support" written on the box lol.

I wouldnt exactly say ATI have put a lot of effort in to releasing drivers, the ones on there website are for build 5308 and are dated 7/28/2005. I wish they would release some drivers for newer builds like nvidia have done, my games such as quake 4 dont seam to work with the microsoft ati driver.

Cool, so Paul says a point release of 5383 is probably going to be the beta2 build. I wonder what will be improved over the 5381 release that was shipped to testers last week.

In any case, I'll be watching Connect for it

I heard that it will be shipped to testers Only milestones get shipped, and beta 2 is a milestone.

i logged in to connect and it asked me if i wanted beta 2 shipped to me. if you select not to have it shipped, that you will download instead... you get entered in some drawing.

Looking foward to Office 2007 beta 2.

Vista is a sad imitation for what was to be Longhorn.
