Tonight, Apple silently updated their Online Store with the long anticipated MacBook laptop. With this release, Apple has removed the G4 PowerBook and G4 iBook from their online store.

Last week, Apple rumor website, ThinkSecret, announced that Apple would be releasing the MacBook on May 9. This was then moved back one week to today, and tonight it is finally available.

The new MacBook comes in 2 colours - the Apple style white, and the new addition, glossy black.
It features your choice of 1.83GHz or 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo CPUs, a 13.3" display, Infared remote and Apple's Front Row media centre software, up to 2GB of memory, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 graphics, slot loading optical drive, up to 120GB hard disk drive, built-in AirPort Extreme, built-in Apple iSight, analog and digital audio in and out, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports, iLife '06 and, of course, Mac OS X Tiger.

The MacBook is on sale now from $1099 USD.

This sucks. I just bought the 14" G4 iBook in mid-January because I needed something working for class. Now they come with Front Row, DVI, built-in iSight, and the ability to run new apps only for Intel Macs. Do they offer any way to trade-up for us folks? If not, they certainly should!!!

Yeah you aren't the only one stung in this way - Apple do this a lot. Although to be fair, this time round you could see the Macbook coming from a mile away.

Actually the black version of the MacBook does not have a glossy finish. It's more a matte, making it more resistant against fingerprints.

Lets hope it scratches as nicely as the iPod nano

I think that's why it's matte

ouch integrated graphics and the gloss finish make it less attractive than the old ibook, and I really liked the look of the 12". IMO the black just doesn't look right unless they offer a dark interface as well. And I have never been a fan of widescreen, I guess I'm just old fashioned in my taste and the thnkpad is the only old school notebook still around. Sigh

gad damn, if it wasnt for the integrated graphics, i would pick one up right away. as it stands, no thanks- too bad the Macbook Pro is twice the price!
