Microsoft has today made available the latest beta version of Windows Media Player, version 11.

WMP11 sports an improved UI, better performance and improved library features. The subscription based service, URGE, is intergrated into the client and offers quick and easy downloads of the latest tunes for $14.95 per month.

URGE is currently being offered as a 14 day trial for a limited period.

Microsoft hopes to attract more people into using WMP11 by offering additional features in the Vista client such as Media Center intergration.

this is the greatest wmp since the classic one that originally shipped with windows 2000! i love it!
#6.1 theyarecomingforyou on 17 May 2006 - 11:18
I thought WMP10 was also very good but I wasn't a fan of any of the bloated versions before it.
#7 fpd on 17 May 2006 - 10:04
Does this allow seeking in flac and mp4 audio files yet like in wmp10?
(3 replies) #8 Callisto~ on 17 May 2006 - 10:05

#8.2 PCyr on 17 May 2006 - 21:03
And I'm getting a good laugh that you've never heard of WoW Nexus.
#8.3 MioTheGreat on 18 May 2006 - 00:45
WoW or not, Would all of the codec crap work? I know the Winamp installer throws an error while installing some Windows Media Player thing (But installs anyway) under x64.
#9 PENGUINwithM4A1 on 17 May 2006 - 10:05
no x64 version?
#10 CiwirXP on 17 May 2006 - 10:06

#14 tiagosilva29 on 17 May 2006 - 10:39
We demand a 64bit (final) version!
(1 reply) #15 Inertia on 17 May 2006 - 10:43
still no urge for us in the UK without changing settings.
#15.1 theyarecomingforyou on 17 May 2006 - 11:17
I wondered why I didn't have that... I didn't know it was because it's not available in the UK.
#16 denzilla on 17 May 2006 - 10:47
LOL! I think they made it build 4827 just to p*** us O.C.D tech heads off. The changelog could even list no changes and we'd still have to have it cause the version number is higher .....
(1 reply) #17 lwebster_2000 on 17 May 2006 - 10:49
URGE Question - the 14 day free trial - can I have an orgy of downloading and burning of as many songs as i can humanly do in 14 days for free?
#17.1 figgy on 17 May 2006 - 12:56
I already downloaded a ton of stuff.
Its f-ing awesome.
Listened to some great comedy stuff that I would never dreamed I would be able to listen for free.

You need to buy the item for $0.99 each to burn it.
You can transfer any number of items to a handheld player in a 15 day period.
(1 reply) #18 Matt T on 17 May 2006 - 11:00
The URGE trial sucks - I hadn't even finished signing up for it when it told me my account had already used it's free trial. :@
#18.1 Hidr0 on 17 May 2006 - 12:47
same here... that sucks!
(2 replies) #19 Daeron Tinúviel on 17 May 2006 - 11:14
why some album arts shows while others not? in fact if i access the cd it shows the art but if i go to library it doesnt, WTF???
#19.1 epple on 17 May 2006 - 15:28
It's a beta - report it.
#19.2 macrosslover on 17 May 2006 - 15:28
i actually had the exact opposite problem. it was showing in player but not in library, but i went through the ones that weren't showing and updated the album info and now all my songs have an album art tagged to them, it's nice
#20 )(RockerBoy on 17 May 2006 - 11:19
nice
(1 reply) #21 punker429 on 17 May 2006 - 11:32
It won't install for me it says I need Media Center 2005. I'm running the older version of Media Center. Anybody else run into this problem?
#21.1 JRosenfeld on 17 May 2006 - 15:21
Only the following OS are supported.

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows XP Professional SP2, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition SP2, or Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2

Earlier versions of XP MCE are explicitly excluded.
(2 replies) #22 omgbomb on 17 May 2006 - 11:41
will this version work with ipods?
#22.1 virtorio on 17 May 2006 - 20:55
No
#22.2 briangw on 17 May 2006 - 21:33
It works with my iPod, but probably because I have XPlay installed.
(1 reply) #23 lukeamott on 17 May 2006 - 11:43
seems the portable media devices icon gets removed from control panel when u install wmp 11
#23.1 figgy on 17 May 2006 - 13:02
Report the bug.
If you report it in the beta period it will get fixed in the final release.
Otherwise this is such inconspicous bug that no will notice it and it will never be fixed.
#24 OceanMotion on 17 May 2006 - 12:08
I must say, I'm very impressed. Only a beta too.
#25 -Dave- on 17 May 2006 - 12:26
what a joke! why wont it install on x64???

WMP10 is 32bit in x64!!!
ggrrrrrrrrrrr

What the hell have they done to the Mini Toolbar Player for when it's minimised. It's ugly as all hell now

not to mention, as above, much of the album art isn't updating.

#26.1 lwebster_2000 on 17 May 2006 - 12:46
agreed it truely is fugly. why the wmp icon is on there is beyond me. it should blend with the theme used with just the buttons showing - that would look cool. great player, sh*te mini mode
#26.2 figgy on 17 May 2006 - 13:00
File a bug. Its a BETA.
#26.3 MrCobra on 17 May 2006 - 13:21
Same here for the non updating media art. Seems if you paste it in it will stick.
#26.4 Sn4k36 on 17 May 2006 - 16:32
the only thing i can't stand for that is the media player icon, doesn't look right
#26.5 ghos on 17 May 2006 - 21:21
I actually think this toolbar player is much better than its predecessor. Though still fails because it doesn't match the OS. I realize its supposed to match Vista, but just doesn't fit in on XP. Besides that I use Windowblinds, and I understand why it won't match skins with it. Still wish it had a way to use existing styles.
#26.6 Smigit on 18 May 2006 - 00:18
it's not the colours thats the issue if thats what you think I meant. It's the harsh jaggered edges to it all. WMP10's had smooth corners that looked good on a variety of these where this doesnt blend even with say the Vista XP theme due to the pure black outline around the entire thing.

I'm sure itll be fixed, MSN 8 also had harsh toastie popups to begin with. But yeah, I meant the actual shape of the box (rectangular as opposed to rounded corners), not the colours themselves (although the blue buttons kind of clash with the black and the WMP logo is out of place too)
#26.7 ZEROarmy on 18 May 2006 - 08:32
Its spelled disc
(1 reply) #27 lukeamott on 17 May 2006 - 13:18

#28 Mattike on 17 May 2006 - 13:20
I'm in love with that new GUI!
Too bad there's no MUI package of it yet, since I can't install the Dutch version on a Windows XP MUI version...
#29 miguel_montes on 17 May 2006 - 13:20
I installed the leaked version and now the WMP11 plugin doesn't work on Firefox. What can I do to fix it?
#30 j0j081 on 17 May 2006 - 13:41
URGE is a good idea but too expensive if you ask me. I subscribe to Yahoo Music Unlimited and it's only 6.99 per mo for extremely similar features.
(1 reply) #31 Galley on 17 May 2006 - 13:44
Does it support AAC? I'm guessing not.
#31.1 XerXis on 17 May 2006 - 14:13
if you have an AAC codec installed
#32 MtDewCodeRedFreak on 17 May 2006 - 13:45
I now have the 4827 update. I uninstalled the 4826 version before installing 4827. All went well though.
#33 xxdesmus on 17 May 2006 - 14:25
Did I mention I love Urge

No different than the leaked build really, but still nice now that's officially out.
(3 replies) #34 Neomac v6 on 17 May 2006 - 14:50
Still too cluttered compared to iTunes. Browsing by album cover might be prettier, but it ain't exactly practical when you have a decent-sized library (and if you don't have artwork for every album).
#34.1 macrosslover on 17 May 2006 - 15:23
you can switch it to a list view so it just list the song names and not the album arts, or just the album names, etc.. i forget which option drop down pane it is, but it is under the library near the top somewhere.
#34.2 benstudley on 17 May 2006 - 18:28
Click on the little icon to the left of the search field and you can switch it to "Details" which won't show the album art.
#34.3 PCyr on 17 May 2006 - 21:10
In addition to what Macrosslover, keep in mind WMP does have better filtering tools than iTunes, that inherently makes the UI a fair bit more complicated.
#35 dolimite35 on 17 May 2006 - 15:37
The SDK information has been avaliable online only for some time.

Windows Media Player 11 SDK

There are no downloads/examples to go off but its a start. I dont know if there is added support for managed code, plug-ins examples in C# ot VB.NET. I might write a Pocket PC remote application in C# using plug-ins instead of a stand alone app.

For those who are having issues uninstalling it run :

%windir%$NtUninstallwmp11$spuninstspuninst.exe
#36.1 bobp on 17 May 2006 - 15:44
Woah, Neowiin doesn't like backslashes.

%windir% $NtUninstallwmp11$ spuninst spuninst.exe

Insert backslashes in the spaces.
#36.2 jwjw1 on 17 May 2006 - 15:51
its in the add/remove...have to click on 'show all updates'

Too bad this does not match Luna at all!
#37.1 Leo Natan on 17 May 2006 - 17:59
It's not designed to match Luna, it's designed to match Vista's look (whatever the name is).
#37.2 MioTheGreat on 18 May 2006 - 00:48
Aero?
#37.3 Leo Natan on 18 May 2006 - 01:19
Yes.. Forgot it when I posted the comment.

Setup has detected you are using Windows Server 2003. What the hell is that?

Microsoft should be able to identify XP-64 with its own software.

it's real sucks
#38.1 neufuse on 17 May 2006 - 16:11
it is windows 2003, XP 64bit is windows 2003 server altered, so technically its right
#38.2 PCyr on 17 May 2006 - 21:12
Well Windows Server 2003 is Windows Server 2000 altered, which is NT4 altered and so on
#38.3 cardg on 17 May 2006 - 21:26
Not this way... We are talking about kernels... Windows 5.2.3790 IS Windows 2003. The "XP" version of this system is only a simple change in registry wich limits the usage of Server tools.

By the way: Even XP boot screen is included in any (32 or 64) version of win2003... by changing windows registry from server to professional, even the bootscreen and system name modify to XP. But the "real" windows XP is Windows 5.1, not Windows 5.2

It's not technically right... it's wrong. You wouldn't call blueberry muffins "chocolate-chip muffins" would you? They may be very similar but they are different products. Does the end user care about kernels? No. Do they care if a Microsoft program can't even detect another Microsoft product properly? Yes.
(1 reply) #39 neufuse on 17 May 2006 - 16:10
any new codecs from MS with this? the last one I think they release was Windows Media Codec 9, any chages here?

The upcoming release of Windows Media Player 11 Beta for XP will include some updated WM codecs, too. Among them is WMV9 Advanced Profile - Microsoft's implementation of SMPTE VC-1 Advanced Profile video codec standard. The codec, like the player, is also a beta release.

BTW, The Professional Encoder for Windows Media should be available shortly:

I'm not too impressed... I'll stick to winamp for now
#40.1 xfx on 17 May 2006 - 18:31
I'll second that.
I find Winamp a lot easier to use.
#40.2 excalpius on 17 May 2006 - 18:53
and winamp has no WGA

#40.3 vlsi0n on 18 May 2006 - 02:31
::waits for the crying of WGA to stop:: ... ::waits a very long time:: But really, I can't wait till crying about WGA stops soon, honestly if you have a legal version verifying takes 15 seconds first run, then after that you wouldn't notice the difference in time it takes to click validate and download.
#40.4 excalpius on 18 May 2006 - 18:23
I'm glad it doesn't bother you. It bothers many of us.
(1 reply) #41 McDave on 17 May 2006 - 16:50
On the download the file has x86 in it, does that mean there is a x64 version?
#41.1 Sn4k36 on 17 May 2006 - 16:59
nope... That's just to show that it's only for x86

so let me get this strait the urge free trial is "No Credit Card Needed" yet inorder to get your free trial you need to enter you credit card details, ha what a joke!
#42.1 figgy on 17 May 2006 - 17:18
What did you click? I signed in without a credit card.
Click on the 14-day trial button.
#43 serverman on 17 May 2006 - 17:14
Looks like thehotfix.net got the date right on this.. May 17th, right on the money.
(1 reply) #44 jadkins555 on 17 May 2006 - 17:23
You are given the option to enter credit card information when signing up for the 14-day trial so that Urge can charge you when the trial is over, therefore subscribing you to the service. You are given the option to skip billing information if you do not want to be charged automatically when the trial is over.

Searching is soo.... fast.....damn i never even dreamt this performance. But mini mode sucks.

Also is there any way to change the background of the list pane (in now playing tab) to black. The blue background stands out from the rest of the theme.
#46 Joni_78 on 17 May 2006 - 17:38
lol wont install on x64.
