Security software vendor Symantec is seeking beta testers for its 2007 line of products, including Norton AntiVirus, Internet Security and Norton Save & Restore. The company also has a number of new products in the pipeline, which will be provided to the Symantec Beta Testing Team.

Interested users can complete the brief registration process on Symantec's Web site. The company has also added an electronic non-disclosure agreement to ease the process. "Participants are expected to remain active throughout a project lifecycle and communicate issues to Symantec team members," the company says.

#4.1 Digital Oracle on 20 May 2006 - 11:46
Why don't you tell them that? Sign up and you will have a direct line with them and hopefully the opportunaty to changes things
#4.2 tibi08 on 20 May 2006 - 12:42
My thoughts exactly... it's bad enough have Symantec retail on your computer without it being bloaty AND beta....
#4.3 Julius Caro on 20 May 2006 - 14:28
Yeah, lol. If final versions are crap and bloatware, I would think it twice before installing a beta version!

Nah, I guess it's worth the short if you really want to get involved...

That's a great idea. In theory.

Honestly, no ill will towards you my friend, but Symantec hasn't listened to any of their customers in years. I've been part of a project for them a couple years back. Never got any response from questions, or even a thank you email when it was all done.

I've spent hours on the phone with them in discussions about their software, and they made me feel as if it all fell on deaf ears.

I've spent longer helping individuals rid their systems of Symantec's products.

Good luck to those that are interested. I am not being sarcastic, but hopefully someday someone will get thru the barrier and Symantec will listen.

#5.2 HoochieMamma on 20 May 2006 - 11:54
^They won't do anything about it, that's the problem.
#5.3 Tzaddikt on 20 May 2006 - 12:14
^Exactly. People have complained about it before to no avail. Symantec only wants to fix bugs. It doesn't want general suggestions for its software.
#5.4 cork1958 on 21 May 2006 - 02:03
What? Nobody thinks that tons of people haven't already told them how bad they suck? I'd ALMOST rather stick an AOHELL cd in somebody's computer over anything from Norton/Symantec!
#5.5 macstorm on 22 May 2006 - 07:09
no way...I can imagine my system loaded of symantec BETAS!!!
#6 niktheguru on 20 May 2006 - 12:18
Hopefully they'll provide a version that'll actually work with vista now (thats not corporate)
#7 gaurav on 20 May 2006 - 12:53
I think i'll pass....i left Symantec for good.
#8 *John* on 20 May 2006 - 13:18
I wouldnt touch their release versions with a 20 foot pole, let alone their BETA'S
#9 californi4 on 20 May 2006 - 14:14
Yep. Exactly my feelings. The non-Beta version is such a royal pain; imagine what the beta would be like!
#10 Daffy_Duck on 20 May 2006 - 14:19
You must be a true masochist to want to run a beta of symantec software, not to mention the release stuff. In fact, their software helped me realize that I'm not a masochist.

Norton is a little too heavy for me, but Symantec antivirus provided by my university is slim and awesome. I wouldn't trade it.
#11.1 Audhumla on 20 May 2006 - 16:21
Exactly. There is no reason to put off the entire company just because of their Norton line.
#11.2 Ideas Man on 21 May 2006 - 02:41
Hahah, don't kid yourself, they corporate line is just as bad. I've seen it bring a complete network to it's knees with the 10 version. It's just a ridiculous and stupid as the home one.
#11.3 Metshrine on 21 May 2006 - 13:49
Really, I have yet to have a problem with Symantec Corp 10.02.2001, Been using it for 2 years now, and with no regrets. Hasnt let a virus slip through. Uses about 20MB of ram, which is fine by me since ram is cheap. If you are on a system where you have to worry about 20MB of ram being used, then I think you need to update the system anyways. Ram is cheap, UPGRADE
#12 jwjw1 on 20 May 2006 - 14:58
well..if a few from here sign up...at least we will be 'informed' about the beta...and if its gonna require installing a separate HDD just for Norton Products (Bloatware).
#13 mohan_168 on 20 May 2006 - 15:24
Symantec Full/Retail/Gold/Final/Platinum/Professional version works like a beta bloatware.
Beta/Alpha of symantec = ???? I wouldnt even want to touch it
#14 xxdesmus on 20 May 2006 - 15:29
^^ Glad you felt the need to post then...

I've been testing for them for a while now and I must say I am glad to take part in at least trying to help them make better products.
#15 webeagle12 on 20 May 2006 - 15:58
Hello we like to sign up to test out bloatware software and make it even worst
(2 replies) #16 Powerless on 20 May 2006 - 16:13
Although I've now gone with NOD32 :o

With the above comments in mind, Symantec must be doing something right eh? Otherwise their consumer line of products would, well not be sold as they couldn't sell 'em.

So they must be doing something right eh?

No

When was the last time you saw Avast Antivirus say, available in any shop?

The average joe isnt tech savvy. He walks into PC World and picks one off the shelf. (Norton products have a huge display in my local PC World)
#16.2 Ideas Man on 21 May 2006 - 02:44
Exactly, the only A/V software I ever see is 80% symantec and 20% macafee (sp! and pc-cillin. Never seen anything else. If NOD32 was packaged and on the shelf, I swear, it would sell like hot cakes over symantec crap.
#17 djesteban on 20 May 2006 - 17:24
ohhh man... they should just give up with this nasty anti-virus software. I mean, come on, who in the world would want to try that bloated piece of crap. If they pay me good.. .maybe... and then again, maybe not
#18 frogworm on 20 May 2006 - 17:25
LMAO, an article saying they are suing Microsoft and then the next article is Symantec saying "anyone wanna be my friend and test some software?". i'm not sorry but Symtanec needs to get a grip on reality.

I think Symantec would be one of the last things I'd be beta-testing for
#19.1 theyarecomingforyou on 20 May 2006 - 19:48
Yeah, I'd rather take my chances with the ebola virus.
#19.2 Ideas Man on 21 May 2006 - 02:45
Hahahah, that was a good response
#20 toadeater on 20 May 2006 - 19:08
Any word about Sygate?
(1 reply) #21 Raiders on 21 May 2006 - 00:18
AVG all da way
#21.1 Charlie Turner on 21 May 2006 - 14:12
Why? AVG is a very poor anti-virus.

Hows is that going 'all da way' its terrible.
#22 darkrats on 21 May 2006 - 02:36
Anyone know where to get a demo of "Save & Restore"?
#23 JediXAngel on 21 May 2006 - 21:19
I thought Norton Systemworks 2006 is a MAJOR improvement over 2005 and basically got it for $20 and less. After Rebates..
#24 JediXAngel on 21 May 2006 - 21:20
I submitted all my info, and there is nothing to download yet.
#25 GAM on 21 May 2006 - 23:25
I'm surprised to hear that Symantec put their software through a beta stage. Won't that just reveal all their defects before it hits the shelves?
(1 reply) #26 Gaius Baltar on 22 May 2006 - 08:51
what's the point?

i'm on linux.

;-)
#26.1 NegaC on 22 May 2006 - 15:44
Thanks for that...
#27 Wrezal on 22 May 2006 - 17:20
heh, thats cool, altho i prefer using AVG, but i did use symantec for a while before hand.

But yeah beta is cool
#28 warwagon on 22 May 2006 - 17:28
The really sad thing is, 98% of the mom and pop , population think that norton is the only antivirus on the face of the earth.
#29 embj on 22 May 2006 - 22:23
I've been beta testing for Symantec for the past two years. I've beta tested several of their products; including SystemWorks, AntiVirus, Internet Security, and Save & Restore. They've gotten a lot better with the 2006 release. Symantec has an excellent beta program (unlike MS) with staff responding to your comments/concerns within 12 hours. They reward you heavily by giving you free copies of all the software you test.

Vista support is coming, too...
