AMD today announced the immediate availability of the AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 dual-core processor and the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+dual-core processor compatible with AMD's new Socket AM2 platform. Socket AM2 from AMD is designed to enable next-generation platform innovations such as AMD Virtualization and high-performance, unbuffered DDR2 memory to the AMD64 architecture, according to the company.

For prosumers and digital enthusiasts who are looking to run sophisticated, multiple processor-intense applications simultaneously, AMD has transitioned the entire lineup of AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors over to the new Socket AM2 while adding the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and 4000+ dual-core processors.

These look nice, a 64 X2 5000 and the ASUS board which was on the front page the other day would be nice :p

Sticking to 939 until I see some definitive performance improvements from AM2.

Thing is AM2 wasn't meant as a definitive performance bump, the Athlon is not starved for bandwidth so DDR2 does next to nothing for it (bandwidth intensive apps aside). Until Conroe/K8L and DDR3 are unleashed, I too will be sticking to 939.

5000+?

Gotta be fast...

The 5000+ apparently only has a 512kb x 2 L2 cache like the 4600+, 4200+, and 3800+ so that is a major turn off.

In my country, almost every asus oxidates in about 2 years.
Just stoped using it for me and my clients, and gone to something more professional (and expensive, unfortunatly quality has a cost)

X2 5000+?
That really makes me X2 3800+ Look crap. I never use my X2 System, I should have just waited and got a better CPU later.

hopefully with both platform being unified on DDR2 memory the prices of ddr1 memory will go down as well so i can upgrade my ram to 2gigs cheaper so i can squeeze another 2 years out of my 939 system.

Now that DDR2 is standard on both, expect DDR1 production to slowly wind down and thus, prices for DDR1 to go up. I need to hurry up and buy 2 gig in preparation for Vista. Then again, DDR4 will be common by the time Vista goes RTM.
