$100 Laptop Price Hike

Nicholas Negroponte showed off the latest prototypes of the fabled $100 PC. It's not longer a $100 PC, however. The ruggedized, two pound Linux desktop (Fedora) system, with mesh networking will sell for about $130 to $140 ([before] shipping) to governments starting in April 2007. Negroponte expects to reach the $100 price point by the end of 2008.

The colorful system can turn into a tablet, and Negroponte said that it "will run like a bat out of hell." Pricing depends on how much RAM, but key is the display, he added. "It has to be sunlight readable. That won't be done until August/September."

Then there will be a beauty contest among three systems and go into manufacturing for shipping, he said. Current seven countries are evaluating the system. The most enthusiastic are Nigeria, Brazil, Thailand and Argentina. In addition, China, India and Egypt have shown interest, as well as Russia, Mexico and Indonesia. Negroponte said that manufacturing has to reach 5 to 6 million to get scale pricing.

That is still really cheap, go technology!
#2 nickhall99 on 02 Jun 2006 - 16:08
I agree, it's still pretty cheap for a computer, but we've got to think on different levels. We thought that $100 wasn't too much, but for some people in the world it's still quite expensive. To now be told that it's an extra 30 or 40 dollars is quite a problem.

As an aside, do we get a choice of colour schemes? I'm not liking that orange too much...

Not really a "hike", as they have always been upfront that the first models would be more expensive, until they got to a quantity that drove the volume price down.

Seems that I have read the per-unit price was estimated to be $80 a year or two further in the timeline.
EDIT: Projected to be "$50 by 2010". (source)

Yeah, I've known form months that this was going to happen and since it was planned like this I wouldn't call it a "hike" at all.

While it's great that they're making cheap laptops, I'm not really liking that design. The overall design makes me think it should be made by Playskool and called "My First Laptop". I'm not trying to diss the concept of offering laptops to those who can't afford $400+ laptops that you'd find in stores, but solid blues, blacks, and grays would be best, IMO.
#4.1 markjensen on 02 Jun 2006 - 16:24
Errrr.. It is for children, you know. Not business travellers.
#4.2 simon360 on 02 Jun 2006 - 20:52
And people in third world countries need bright colors to cheer them up, especially children. They want fun, not fashion. In fact to them, fun is fashion. Any child thinks like that.
#4.3 _kane81 on 02 Jun 2006 - 22:30

.....
That’s right and children NEED bright colours to overwhelm them and treat them like kids.

IMO I think this is a terrible idea. (both the bright colours and the laptop)

Guess they need to tap into new "Markets" some how and why not start with the kids, give them bright coloured toys.

In a world where people can't afford basic medicine of food, were trying to hook them onto technology......
#5 SomeAzn on 02 Jun 2006 - 16:31
Erm, why are people complaining about how it looks??

"Then there will be a beauty contest among three systems and go into manufacturing for shipping, he said."

The laptop he is showing is just the prototype.

Technology do something accesible for the world ??? I can't believe that... Where's the gamble??? Bill, I have my eyes on you!!! don't try to install windows on this great device.
#6.1 markjensen on 02 Jun 2006 - 16:40
They have already given at least one unit to Microsoft, specifically so MS can get WinCE to work on it.
#6.2 lbmouse on 02 Jun 2006 - 16:59
That'll be the first PC where the OS out prices the hardware.

Invest in Internet Cafes. Even kids need full PCs.
#7.1 clonk on 02 Jun 2006 - 16:57
Yep the african desert is a prime spot to setup a net cafe!

So many people miss the point of this device.
#7.2 lbmouse on 02 Jun 2006 - 17:02
You mean they don't have a Starbucks every 30 feet in the Sahara?
#8 Mathiasdm on 02 Jun 2006 - 16:45
Oohhh, mesh networking!
(1 reply) #9 raskren on 02 Jun 2006 - 17:05
Are these intended to be purchased in large quantities by governments of these poor countries? Or are individuals supposed to travel to the nearest desert computer store to pick one up?

If these become handouts, who's to say that a poor family won't resell it for food or something?
#9.1 SomeAzn on 02 Jun 2006 - 18:12
If they need to sell the machine for food, shouldn't we let them?

You gotta be alive to use a laptop.

Seems the OS out pricing the system will be an upcoming trend with Vista Ultimate coming in at $450.

Except Vista Ultimate isn't meant for low end PCs. DUR da DUR!!!!!!!!
#10.2 Leddy on 03 Jun 2006 - 05:56
Annnnd Vista Ultimate is designed for people who could afford a $2500 computer which runs it comfortably.

However, get it like the rest of us will. Viva la MSDN.

I'm in Argentina and I can honestly say there's no market for that thing.
#11.1 SomeAzn on 02 Jun 2006 - 18:14
What are you talking about? I can hardly imagine a part of the habitable world that there isn't a market for this thing.

Hell, if it is decent, I'd buy one for my little brother, if I could.
#11.2 ProfessorX on 02 Jun 2006 - 18:43
I agree. I have lived in Pakistan and I can tell you, poor people cannot afford to buy this. $100 ~ RS.6000 an average maid in Pakistan makes anywhere from 1000-3000 a month.
Those who can save up will not consider buying this since its not something they need. LOL they will infact sell it to someone else for more money.
And by the way one can get a much much better computer starting from RS.10000 which includes WindowsXP Pro w/ SP2 for $2 bucks more!
#11.3 SomeAzn on 02 Jun 2006 - 18:51
Well, we have to remember that this laptop isn't merely aimed at individual families. They are also aimed at community centers or perhaps groups of familes. Even if one family can't buy one, perhaps a school could afford to buy a few.

Even if a school can't afford any, the government might just give them to schools.

The minimum order quantity is 1 million.

Well look at that. Just what we need- Now the Nigerian 419ers can train new ones while they're still crapping their pants. When you start receiving e-mails attempting to con you out of candy and super balls, you will know who to blame.

Remember what AOL did to the internet when it brought millions of stupid people on-line. Hopefully this will be even better, when hilarity ensues with wacky hijinks from the third world!
#12.1 rm20010 on 03 Jun 2006 - 04:43
Until these laptops have Internet connectivity and not rely off a mesh P2P network, zip it. Why not we first look at ourselves and fix the problems of moron spammers over here on this side of the world?
#12.2 OrganicPanda on 03 Jun 2006 - 08:26
did you SERIOUSLY just imply that these people are all stupid , god you're ignorant
#13 vetSMeK on 02 Jun 2006 - 17:59
still a great idea

How about we worry about getting these nations clean food and water. I've been to the rougher parts of these nations. This is quite a ludacris project.

Yea, it was a flipping spelling mistake. My bad, didn't check over what I typed...I hate hip hop.

I really hope they start using these in US schools. I've heard several statements that they'll only be available to 3rd world countries which imo is an utterly retarded idea. A sub-100 dollar laptop with ebooks could save school districts several hundred dollars per student per year, if not more.

You think politicians want to save money?
#17 Section 31 on 02 Jun 2006 - 22:13
It may be a good learning experience for elementary school students. Teachers can teach young kids the basics of computer use, etc. It may even help the teachers with the lessons they teach.

your assuming that the kids have a school to go to and that the teacher can actually use a PC.

I think clean food and water is more important!!!!!!

I'm glad I have finally read some comments that have said that "trying to tap into the thrid world market" is

a) not going to work
b) basic living standards are more important

if this did work, it will just prove how evil the market really is....
#18.1 SomeAzn on 02 Jun 2006 - 23:05
Well, you are assuming that lacking clean water and lacking computers are mutual exclusive, which they are not. There are plenty of places where they have drinkable water and lack computers...

Hell, I have relatives in China that live in the city and have perfectly drinkable water, but they don't have a computer because all the computers on the market are too expensive.

Just because the world is seperated into First and Third world nations doesn't mean that all Third world nations are the same. Not everyone third world nation is a bottomless pit of dirty and poverty. There are areas of grey that you are not even considering.
#19 Galley on 03 Jun 2006 - 00:06
Charge $300-400 for one in the U.S. and use the profit to give away laptops in poor countries.
#20 war on 03 Jun 2006 - 03:44

j/k But it will never happen!!!

#22.1 SomeAzn on 03 Jun 2006 - 23:15
Whats wrong with plastic?

My laptop is plastic. Whats wrong with their laptop being plastic?

Would you rather it be made of metal so it can rust and weight three times more?
