At long last we are hearing some more on the Yahoo and MSN interoperability deal that was announced last year, thanks to Leah over at the team blog. The interoperability will allow users on both services to send basic IM's to one another, and see each other's status. I suspect that some users will be disappointed by this, but as it's taken two companies this long to get here, lets be grateful for whatever they provide us.

I know the first question that testers will be asking is "when can we try this?" I would not expect beta testers (both managed or those on ideas.live.com) to get a test build before Messenger goes final, though as always, this could change. So now the second question will be "When is it going final?"

"Soon"

They've been saying for quite a while they'd do this.

Same with AOL... this was talked about years ago and now we're getting some half based method. It's better than nothing but it is absolutely shocking that it has taken this long.

You mean Voice communication on messenger?
The latest client http://g.msn.com/1csbeta/Mess80_EN has voice communication.
The quality is extremely good.
Messenger used to have the worst voice quality now they have the best.

Yay! I don't know anyone that uses Yahoo! Messenger. My mum has one or two contacts on Yahoo! Messenger (that's the only reason why she has it on her computer) and soon she won't need it because she can talk to them on Windows Live Messenger.

[troll]
Or you could sign up for Jabber, and use it to talk to AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, and just about everyone else on the planet

True there is also many others to use...like Gaim for example (that is what I use in Linux and XP) but I actually like Windows Live Messenger so I'm happy that now I can just tie everything together in that..cause I've got friends in ICQ, Yahoo! and WL (MSN)...I'll probally just ditch ICQ and tie Yahoo! to Windows Live Messenger and then is all good for me

Does anyone even use YAIM, anymore, seems like it never really picked up.

I just hope those guys hurry up on this as I want to get rid of MSN with all these connection problems I've been having recently (probably because my e-mail for MSN Messenger is invalid). However, I wonder if it would be possible to transfer MSN contact lists over to Yahoo Messenger when that happens!

Oh, get over it!

Things are getting bigger nowadays; this isn't 1980, for God's sake.

It's kinda funny to hear that people with +1GB RAM are complaining about BLOAT.

Get a grip, 1GB is more than plenty to handle bloat
Quote this comment #11.3 Posted by Smigit on 06 Jun 2006 - 02:05
It doesnt have to add bloat at all. It all rest on how they decide to implement it.

Wohoooo!! Finally, time to get rid of Y! Messenger. The only reason I'm using it is because all my friends have only Y! Messenger. I never had such a buggy IM client. WLM is 587593 times better.

And meanwhile, I'll be glad to see my friends stop having to run the various MSN clients to talk to the few friends that they have on that network, and instead use Yahoo's superior client.

Now if only they would address the bug that prevents me from logging in with a post-7.0 client due to the space in my account names...

Bah, bull****. Everybody should go the XMPP way like Google did. Only then we'd have real interoperability!
Use open formats and open standards for christs sake!

Nice. At least they are combining them.

Just a publicity ploy. I don't know anyone that actually "uses" yahoo messenger, and this combination is about as exciting as "Microsoft press release: the xbox 360 has sold more consoles than the 5-6 year old PS2 this year so far".

O_o

Google IM is a winner. Simple, convenient (I love how it allows me to chat on gmail.) Who doesn't like non-bloat?

google talk is just too basic tho' maybe you don't use the features but I and my friends do - hell even nudge which I thought was a terrible idea I've actually really warmed to and lets face it the webcam, voice chat support is essential.

People do use Yahoo messenger but, infact I dare say more than Google Messenger. I mean I know noone who uses ICQ or AIM but both those clients still have huge usage bases.

You'd be surprised how close the MSN and Yahoo user figures are. Both in the 20 millions, I think.

It seems like Y! will probably lose most of its users to MSN.
