On Tuesday, Google co-founder Sergey Brin stated that that the search giant may have "compromised our principles" in kowtowing to the Chinese governments demands for censorship. Now the government of China has responded. On Thursday Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said that while China welcomes business from foreign internet companies, they must respect and abide by the country's laws.

It is apparent from these statements that the Chinese government does not intend to back down on its censorship policies. All eyes will now be on Google as it is left to struggle with its principles and the Google philosophy of "don't be evil".
