Neowin member pikablu0530 has posted instructions on how you can register a live.com ID at Microsoft, it's a few simple steps and after that you will maybe snap up an ID that's not already registered to someone else. I got mine and have verified that these steps do in fact work. Enjoy!

How to get a Live.com ID
- Go to https://accountservices.passport.net/reg.srf register an passport account with a NON-HOTMAIL/MSN email address
- Sign in to http://login.live.com with your passport that you just registered.
- Paste https://account.live.com/EditProf.aspx into address bar.
- Edit your registered information, input your birthday (18+) and change your Country/Region to 'United States'.
- Paste https://account.live.com/LoginChangeName.aspx to address bar, then your can change your passport to @live.com.
- If you do not change to US (skip step four), you'll get @windowslive.com domain address
- If you change to 'China', you'll get @live.cn domain address
- If you change to 'Korea', you'll get @live.co.kr domain address and so on...
- It seems like Windows Live Mail only works with @live.com addresses at the moment
- Please note that after migrating to @live.com domain, your previous NON-HOTMAIL/MSN email address will no longer be associated with passport
- Currently, it only works for NON-HOTMAIL/MSN email addresses (in Step 1)

The windows live mail also works for Custom Domain users... I am running it now on my http://starthost.co.uk domain. Just go to http://domains.live.com
And don't forget -- Windows Live is the replacement for MSN.

Cheers (y)
John
How long before someone signs up as "number5is@live" (alive)
Question though: I think I've read somewhere that all hotmail adresses will be converted to @live at some point. If that's true then I better register an @live for my girlfriend also, since she wants to keep her current email name, right?
i have mine and nobody is having it!
oh btw, after you have registered your @live.com (or @live.co.uk or whatever) account, you can switch the Country back to its original value with no consequences

Well, I don't think the dumbasses who registered multiple accounts helped much.
It woulda been closed off regardless since it wasnt supposed to be available.
Anyway luckily I had stayed up playing CSS and got mine when I saw the news as I quit at 3am local time.
anyway I got a swab. Not really for me but I registered for my closer mates since its 3am and they are asleep. Got smi&^%@live.com and a surname one so I'm pretty happy overall.

If it wasn't published as news on Neowin perhaps this thing would have been available a little longer.
Still had 3 account names left in my list of 5
Who would have thought it, MS actually found us out? I mean, this information has only been posted on nearly all of the biggest technology websites on the internet? That, and the fact that MS would have recorded a 10,000% increase in Live Mail sign-ups over the last few hours, who thought that that would arouse suspicion?
I dont care though, I got all the addy's I wanted [/Gloating]
Cheers!
LOL!
Anyways got my accounts
I for one have all my forum subscriptions pointed to Hotmail. Don't much fancy having to change all of them. I have also, at least once, come across a business that was trading on a Hotmail address. Yes, I know, but who's gonna tell them?
Anyone having this error??
