Neowin member pikablu0530 has posted instructions on how you can register a live.com ID at Microsoft, it's a few simple steps and after that you will maybe snap up an ID that's not already registered to someone else. I got mine and have verified that these steps do in fact work. Enjoy!

How to get a Live.com ID
  1. Go to https://accountservices.passport.net/reg.srf register an passport account with a NON-HOTMAIL/MSN email address
  2. Sign in to http://login.live.com with your passport that you just registered.
  3. Paste https://account.live.com/EditProf.aspx into address bar.
  4. Edit your registered information, input your birthday (18+) and change your Country/Region to 'United States'.
  5. Paste https://account.live.com/LoginChangeName.aspx to address bar, then your can change your passport to @live.com.
Note:
  • If you do not change to US (skip step four), you'll get @windowslive.com domain address
  • If you change to 'China', you'll get @live.cn domain address
  • If you change to 'Korea', you'll get @live.co.kr domain address and so on...
  • It seems like Windows Live Mail only works with @live.com addresses at the moment
  • Please note that after migrating to @live.com domain, your previous NON-HOTMAIL/MSN email address will no longer be associated with passport
  • Currently, it only works for NON-HOTMAIL/MSN email addresses (in Step 1)

fair enough....
The windows live mail also works for Custom Domain users... I am running it now on my http://starthost.co.uk domain. Just go to http://domains.live.com

And don't forget -- Windows Live is the replacement for MSN.

Maybe put in a note about Canada as well, there are live.ca's available.
#3.1 Sn4k36 on 16 Jun 2006 - 15:04
whaa... I've only had the option to pick @windowslive.com
#3.2 darkpuma on 16 Jun 2006 - 16:28
Double check your country you put in, the webpage sucks and keeps changing it on you unless you're REALLY careful. Kept setting me to cambodia lol
#4 *John* on 16 Jun 2006 - 14:29

Nice One! - Worked perfectly and I got the username I wanted. Cheers!
#7 Darkness2k on 16 Jun 2006 - 14:50
If you sign up from the UK you'll get "username@live.co.uk".

How long before someone signs up as "number5is@live" (alive)
#8 Colin-uk on 16 Jun 2006 - 14:54
@live.co.uk also works with Live mail
(1 reply) #9 idoia on 16 Jun 2006 - 15:01
is impossible that someone has taken my name

#9.1 Sn4k36 on 16 Jun 2006 - 15:24
ouch now that gotta suck... I've just register @windowslive.com and a @live.com names. So i don't have to really worry about people trying to take my name for one of these names.
#10 TheGriffin on 16 Jun 2006 - 15:05
Yay I can finally have an email assosciated with my NAME.
#11 einsteinbqat on 16 Jun 2006 - 15:08
Got my live.ca account!
#12 Th3-0n3 on 16 Jun 2006 - 15:08
I have an email with just my first name now easy to give out to others.

Question though: I think I've read somewhere that all hotmail adresses will be converted to @live at some point. If that's true then I better register an @live for my girlfriend also, since she wants to keep her current email name, right?
#13 Xavien on 16 Jun 2006 - 15:10
mwuhahaha its mine!

i have mine and nobody is having it!

oh btw, after you have registered your @live.com (or @live.co.uk or whatever) account, you can switch the Country back to its original value with no consequences

I'm confused about this...it doesn't overwrite the email address used does it? Is it just an f-ed up way of making an account? I used an alternate gmail to make the account, will it be connected to that in any way?
#23 denzilla on 16 Jun 2006 - 16:11
I got an email saying that I need to confirm the email address I signed up with but already changed it to live.com. Will this cause me to lose my live.com email?

Still have to pay for POP access? Pathetic.

That's why GMail is and will always be better than Hotmail/Live Mail or whatever it's called.
#31.1 rIaHc3 on 17 Jun 2006 - 15:08
Only for that, you dislike Windows Live Mail?

Thankyou Neowin! o/

Well this sucks - can get live.com.au but no windows live mail - just plain hotmail with only 25 megs. What's going on? Any ideas. It also occurs with standard hotmail accounts registered as australian residency.

Well, I don't think the dumbasses who registered multiple accounts helped much.
#37.2 Smigit on 17 Jun 2006 - 06:31
disregarding the arguement of whether ppl should have multiple or not (I dont see why not, many people like to route email to multiple accounts such as me), I dont think it really mattered whether ppl had multiple or not. The signup wasnt supposed to be available yet and Neowin is a huge tech site visited by many MS employees, many probablky working on or close with live. It was only a matter of time befause this was caught out.

It woulda been closed off regardless since it wasnt supposed to be available.

Anyway luckily I had stayed up playing CSS and got mine when I saw the news as I quit at 3am local time.
(1 reply) #38 Audhumla on 16 Jun 2006 - 17:27
Ah, crap. Did anyone else's account get "deactivated"? All I'm seeing is a hotmail activation screen upon login now.
#38.1 TheGriffin on 16 Jun 2006 - 17:45
You get that anyways, new account thats why.
#39 Colin-uk on 16 Jun 2006 - 17:45
haha, MS found us out lmao, at least i got myself a nice address tho
(1 reply) #40 Smigit on 16 Jun 2006 - 17:49
who the hell took richard@live.com

anyway I got a swab. Not really for me but I registered for my closer mates since its 3am and they are asleep. Got smi&^%@live.com and a surname one so I'm pretty happy overall.

Damn you Steven Parker!
If it wasn't published as news on Neowin perhaps this thing would have been available a little longer.
Still had 3 account names left in my list of 5
#42 *John* on 16 Jun 2006 - 17:55
LMFAO!

Who would have thought it, MS actually found us out? I mean, this information has only been posted on nearly all of the biggest technology websites on the internet? That, and the fact that MS would have recorded a 10,000% increase in Live Mail sign-ups over the last few hours, who thought that that would arouse suspicion?

I dont care though, I got all the addy's I wanted [/Gloating]

#45.1 jmole on 16 Jun 2006 - 18:18
You can change it to the beta view or classic view on your options page.
#45.2 eilegz on 16 Jun 2006 - 20:56
theres no option like that and i only have 25 mb its really not a big deal all this live account its more no live than anything else
#46 acidphosphatase on 16 Jun 2006 - 18:18
Any ideas about Aussie accounts then, and when they'll be able to use WLM?
(3 replies) #47 Quillz on 16 Jun 2006 - 18:20
I'll just wait for my Hotmail account to switch to "@live.com." For the time being, my GMail account is fine.
#47.1 Smigit on 16 Jun 2006 - 18:48
I wonder how this will work. If someone takes the @live first youd be stuck I guess with making a new one.
#47.2 Havin_it on 16 Jun 2006 - 20:24
They'd just yank the @hotmail.* addresses? Surely not! That would massively **** off a lot of folks for whom having a never-changing addy is important, and/or who don't follow developments with the whole Live thingy.

I for one have all my forum subscriptions pointed to Hotmail. Don't much fancy having to change all of them. I have also, at least once, come across a business that was trading on a Hotmail address. Yes, I know, but who's gonna tell them?
#47.3 Smigit on 17 Jun 2006 - 01:48
no, they are giving ppl the option of moving

What happens to all the mail sitting on the @hotmail.com address?

What happens when people mail me on @hotmail.com after i have converted to @live?

Anyways after checking my @live account have the live mail while my @windowslive account have old crappy 25mb hotmail
#62.1 Smigit on 17 Jun 2006 - 01:53
the move is optional. Thats how it works. You need to say you wana swap. I suspect that form on part 5 is the actual one hotmail users were intended to use to make the swap eventually.
