Microsoft Corp. today released Windows Live Messenger, available at http://get.live.com/messenger/overview, one of the first of more than 20 new Windows Live services to launch globally over the course of the year.

“Windows Live is all about giving consumers the tools and services they need to be in control as they stay connected to the people they care about, on top of the information that is important to them, and better protected across all their online activities,” said Martin Taylor, corporate vice president of Windows Live and MSN at Microsoft.

Features of Windows Live Messenger include the following:

Video Call - The free, synchronized audio and video service in Windows Live Messenger

Windows Live Call with Verizon Web Calling service.

Cordless phones designed exclusively for Windows Live Messenger - Uniden America Corp. and Philips recently introduced phones that make the Windows Live Call feature for Windows Live Messenger available in North America and Europe.

Microsoft LifeCams optimized for Windows Live Messenger - Microsoft Hardware and the Windows Live services group announced last week a line of webcams that are designed for use with Windows Live Messenger.

Sharing Folders - Now sharing is as easy as dragging and dropping a file. Customers can more easily share their files and personal photos with family, friends and colleagues on their Windows Live Messenger Contact List.

Windows Live Contacts - Contact information is always current with Windows Live Contacts in Windows Live Messenger.

Integration with Windows Live services - Windows Live Messenger integrates with other Windows Live services such as Windows Live Search, Windows Live Local, Windows Live Mail and MSN Spaces.

I can't use it until Patchou gives me the go ahead.
#7.1 WindowsNT on 19 Jun 2006 - 20:07
Why do you need Patchou to say "you can use it" ?

Patchou is our divine overlooker. We may not step forward until Patchou blesses it with his holy Plus! code.

I'm an Official Messenger Plus! Live tester.

I have to wait for a new build of Plus! Live before I can use Windows Live Messenger Final.

#18.1 PureLegend on 19 Jun 2006 - 20:25
True, reminds me of the Vista announcement.

I doubt there will be much difference...

http://join.msn.com/messenger/overview

There is this, but I think it might still be the MSN Messenger 7.5, instead of Windows Live Messenger 8. If someone doesn't mind, could someone check it out.

Also just a thought, with this being Windows Live Messenger, will this replay Windows Messenger 5 (minus the Live bit)?
#21.1 Bobster on 19 Jun 2006 - 20:21
That's MSN Messenger mate...
#21.2 King Mustard on 19 Jun 2006 - 20:21
I can confirm the link is to MSN Messenger at the moment.
#21.3 PureLegend on 19 Jun 2006 - 20:25
Windows Messenger has been axed as of Vista, to save all the lawsuit hassle.

Windows Messenger has indeed been dropped from Windows Vista.

More information.
#21.5 Kirkburn on 19 Jun 2006 - 21:50
Windows Messenger, however, is NOT the same thing MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger (which are not included with Windows in the first place).

For those wondering what will happen to MSN Messenger as soon as its successor goes final, it will live on "for people using operating systems older than Windows XP (on which Windows Live Messenger is not supported)".

Removed BETA tag

Yes, as well as re-wording the paragraphs to reflect present-tense instead of future-tense (did I use those 'tenses' correctly?).
#29 m-head on 19 Jun 2006 - 20:41
Dammit, I was hoping to get this before I get off of the computer tonight, looks like I'll have to wait until the morning. Still, it gives king Patchou to release Plus! Live.

(1 reply) #56 Grandaevus on 19 Jun 2006 - 21:36
I hope it can run multiple instances. I use the same desktop for me and the misses and I run a patched 7.5 to be able to be logged in at the same time. Or even better 2 accounts in the same client but I seriously doubt it can.
#56.1 Bobster on 19 Jun 2006 - 21:37
Just wait for mess patch to be released or A-Patch and use the polygamy feature.
(1 reply) #57 INFERNO2k on 19 Jun 2006 - 21:36
Why was the Yahoo service removed?
#57.1 ViperSnake on 19 Jun 2006 - 21:38
It isn't ready yet, Yahoo support is still coming, it's just not here yet.
