Microsoft will officially launch its Windows CE 6.0 OS for embedded and mobile devices in the first half of its fiscal year 2007 (July 2006-June 2007), a move which is likely to bring Windows CE 6.0-powered handheld devices to the market early next year, according to Eddie Wu, Microsoft's senior director of device solutions sales, Asia and worldwide ODM ecosystems.

Wu made the remark yesterday in Taipei as the software giant launched a beta version of its Windows CE 6.0 in the Taiwan market.

According to Wu, Microsoft's Windows CE embedded system currently accounted for 30% of the world's handheld device market, with the percentage points climbing to 50% in the PDA segment. Overall, about 10 million handheld devices (excluding GPS devices) used globally are powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, Wu added.

In addition, revenues of Microsoft's embedded system business unit in Asia are expected to exceed US$100 million in fiscal 2006, which ends June 30 this year, Wu noted.

Windows CE is the OS of those Pocket PCs? Or that is a different version of windows? Because I saw a nokia the other day, more like a PDA than a mobile phone, and I have to say I was impressed by it.

Microsoft Phones and pocket pc's use CE (Windows Mobile)
The nokia and sony phones use symbian
Some treo's use Palm

Ive got a Dell x51v PPC which is a good PPC, it's fast and very stable. However ive never had any luck with the smartphone edition, i have frequent crashes (when taking calls, when on standby), slow/sluggish performance. I hope WM6 will fix these.

I currently use a Sony P910i which is rock solid.

For crying out loud WM5.0 devices have only just started coming on the market and now they are bringing out WM2007?

Jesus give it a break.

WM2007? This article says nothing about WindowsMobile. CE is basement for WindowsMobile, but new release of CE does not mean new release of WindowsMobile - WM5 was released almost a year after WindowsCE 5.0

can you just upgrade to this? I have a treo 700W

Treo 700w has WindowsMobile 5.0, which means that you need to wait until WindowsMobile 6.0 to have a new version. And upgrade will be possible only if Palm will make a new ROM for your device (which is very rare practice).

Palm will not allow you to upgrade to 6.0. You will have to wait for a new device from Palm that features 6.0, which is exactly why I didn't and refuse to buy the 700W when it comes to Sprint early next month.

Well, thinking like that for most other devices is fine, but the 700w would never be able to run Windows Mobile 6.0, it barely runs 5.0 with its measly 32mb of ram! My toshiba e335 3 years ago had 64mb and only pocket pc 2002!
