- Slick, although I'm still very doubtful of Vista's overall potential. Waiting for Vienna.

- Is this what the last few updates in Vista 5384 were for?
Does one have to install this new release to get the new
"features"? -
#8.1 Posted by Computer Guru on 24 Jun 2006 - 22:45
- yes you do...
-
#8.2 Posted by Brandon Live on 25 Jun 2006 - 00:38
- There have been probably thousands of fixes since beta 2 in this build, and tons of feature/design work.
But it's already a bit outdated from my perspective =)

- So, imagine we can acquire it through alternative paths (what I do not plan to do, since my Vista Beta 2 works wonders, and I don't plan to format again, thankyouverymuch), will the Beta2 key work?
-
#10.1 Posted by theyarecomingforyou on 24 Jun 2006 - 23:42
- This is something that I was wondering also. My impression is that the Beta 2 keys will work until the RC stage, at which they then change, as wasn't that what happened with XP?
-
#11 Posted by xxdesmus on 24 Jun 2006 - 23:54
- supposedly you can upgrade from Beta 2 ...we shall see (though I would suggest a clean install anyways)

- For people that don't participate in the Connect program, are they allowed to install 5456? If so, where would they get it from?

- Remove Applications Before Upgrading
When upgrading Windows Vista Beta2 x64 to Windows Vista 5456 x64 you may be unable to uninstall applications after the upgrade is completed. We recommend users uninstall any applications prior to upgrade that you may need to remove after the upgrade has completed.
Potential Data Loss with Windows Mail
Existing Windows Mail settings AND Data will NOT migrate successfully from Beta 2 to 5456. Be sure to use Windows Easy Transfer to save any Windows Mail data you care about before upgrading. You will receive an error message when first booting into 5456.5 that says “Unable to upgrade your message databases.” Once the upgrade completes you can restore your Windows Mail settings and data using Windows Easy Transfer.
Last Logged in User Changed on Upgrade
When upgrading from Beta 2 to 5456, the last logged in username shown at the logon screen after completing the upgrade will be Administrator. You will need to click the “Switch User” button to login as your user account.
Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender
Support for Xbox 360 as a Media Center extender is not included in this Vista build. In order to continue using the Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender with Vista, please remain on Beta 2 (build 5384). Support for the Xbox 360 as an Extender will be available in a future Vista build.
Pseudo Localized Text Present
Parts of the OS contain Pseudo-localized text, or non-english characters placed together to approximate English words. (Text that looks similar to the following: “Щĭηđбш§ Мčđěα Ţĺä˙ёя”) This is used internally, is known and being addressed in future builds.
Username with a . generates error
On a clean install, during OOBE, if you add a username which contains a period (.) in it, you will receive an error message after hitting next that says your computer name is invalid. You will need to remove the period from the computer name to continue. This is set to be fixed in a future build.

- "Pseudo Localized Text Present"
Why would they do that? -

Why would they do that?
I'm assuming they're doing it to see if any problems occur (such as crashes, or other unexpected actions) with non English characters under certain situations... -
#15.2 Posted by Computer Guru on 25 Jun 2006 - 08:13
- Not crashes, but complete distortions of display. Previous builds (notably 5365 and below) would completely FUBAR if an Arabic character was displayed.

- This build is awesome; it has improved a great deal in speed, in fact is faster than XP for me at this point, I have noticed lots of new animations, new icons everywhere and many of the legacy ones are starting go away.
The UAC behavior has also changed a lot and it is much less intrusive, I have noticed slightly new layout in the explorer shell as well as new features on it, for example you can now also pick "Folders View" in the left side of Windows explorer, over all this is a big leap from Beta2 gays, but what impresses me the most is speed and stability!
I'm loving this build.

- So why the heck did Microsoft put all that work into WinFS in the first place? If it was abandoned from the start, Vista would have been released probably as early as January 2006!
Ah, when will Microsoft ever learn to not put in too much bloat into its products?

#21 Posted by Nexx295 on 25 Jun 2006 - 14:06
- This build really rocks! I think I'll try again to use it as my main OS. Hopefully it'll work good enough.

"Some of the new features include a revamped Aero/DWM subsystem, and a completely overhauled and siginficantly less obtrusive UAP for all those that couldn’t stand the previous one. From what we have been told by Microsoft, the Time Zone bug that plagued previous builds of Windows Vista has been patched, and quite a few fixes in the Regional Settings and IME have been patched."
This is the first beta release of Vista since Microsoft released Beta 2 to a much wider testing audience in late May.
