Little more than a month after issuing a bug-laden Windows Vista Beta 2, Microsoft has shipped its first post-Beta 2 interim build of the next Windows and it makes up a lot of lost ground. Indeed, it's hard not to view this build and not believe that Microsoft is absolutely back on track.

Though there are few major changes in build 5456, which, despite the naming convention used on its desktop, is part of the release candidate (RC) build tree, and not a direct successor to Beta 2. But we shouldn't expect major changes at this stage: After all, Windows Vista was mostly feature complete as far back as February 2006. But what we get in build 5456 is dramatic improvement in reliability, usability, performance, and fit and finish. It is, quite simply, the build Microsoft should have shipped as Beta 2 to millions of people around the world. This build is so much better than Beta 2, in fact, that I'm begging the company to offer it to everyone that signed up for the public beta through the Community Public Preview (CPP).

Hmm, I'd say that the outspoken PT has something to say on this latest build instead of all the disappointment we've seen in earlier articles. Also incase you forgot we report news on stuff like Vista all the time, and XP before that.

You do sound ungrateful.

This is frikin Neowin. What do you think the 'win' part means?

I completely dissagree, I've been reading this website since the beginning and it's the main reason I keep coming back

I agree with Fubar.. Less opinions of other website authors.

I say let the news flow. If you don't like it, don't read it - and especially don't put the effort in to say how you do not like it.

I agree with neobond, this site is about reporting stuff on WINDOWS, that is its main focus. thats why any news about vista should be posted as thats what the sites main aim is. if you dont like go else were or do not read the posting.

PS: I am not having ago at anyone, i am just stating the facts :p

I always thought Neowin's main aim was tech news...

If you don't want Vista news why go to the finest Windows-related news site around eh? And like it or not, what PT posts about MS beta OSes *is* tech news believe it or not, regardless of one's opinion of him.

the real question is "Why do we care about Paul's opinion?"

There are probably 10 other reviews of 5456 already that are far more comprehensive, and yet because it's Paul he is suddenly front page news.

I know I have a gallery for 5456 that has more images than Paul has on his site.

This isn't bashing Neowin, this is bashing Paul and those who still kiss the ground he walks on, it's sad really.

Best Vista build yet, no doubt. A total step in the right direction. Beta 2 and the build just before it made me think Vista was going to end up a mess for release, this release makes me believe otherwise.

I got soundmax drivers to work on Beta 2 (64bit) - i had to disable driver signature requirements on the bootloader. PM me if you wan the drivers i'm sure i can find them.

I must agree this build is a big leap from Beta2, the OS has been tuned up and it is faster than XP for me at this point, there are new features on the Explorer shell, new icons and animations in many places, the legacy icons are starting to go away finaly and the UAC feature has been re-designed to be a lot less intrusive, The GUI is way faster than beta 2 and the glass just looks better. What has impressed me the most however is how quick on this build is!

will the tab reordering make way to ie7 b3 for xp?

The best way to keep up with what is going on with IE7 is to follow the IE Blog. It is ran by the IE7 Beta Team.

That new mouse pointer looks weird.

For now, you can get the default Windows cursor anti-aliased with this cursor set.

a new damn mouse pointer is all anyone has to say about vista
what about when you put a usb drive in and it can use it to speed up boot up times like in a previous build

but no wait... A new mouse cursor
how the heck did xp survive this long with those cursors.......
