Apple has responded to widespread reports that claim some MacBooks become discoloured after a few short weeks of use. A vocal minority of customers have claimed that the new Macs become discoloured, mainly around the areas on which users rest their hands on the keyboard.

Some reports have claimed Apple to have admitted that the problem exists, but this isn't yet the case. The company is requesting that users who claim to have been affected should contact Apple support, as the MacBooks remain under warranty and the company needs to explore the claimed problem to establish its cause.

In a statement, Apple said: "Apple is aware of this input and is looking into it. If a customer has any technical issues, they should contact AppleCare."

Is discolouration (is that even a word?) really that big of a deal that someone would return their MacBook? Over time it will become discoloured anyway, and aesthetics are really such a small thing when it comes to these things. Not to say that I would go for a neon pink with aqua blue stripes laptop, but discolouration just doesn't seem that major to me.

If it was that the screen started presenting discoloured images and so on then it would be different, but just for the look of a laptop...I'm not so sure.

That maybe true but it's should discolour within a week or so.

Yeah, but the faulty MagSafe cables set fire to your house.

apple should really give it a bit more thought into these kinds of problems in designing such a computer, with a very glossy finish, and the case itself white.
#5 Ambience on 01 Jul 2006 - 04:51
Imagine getting white or black ink stains on your hands while using the thing. You'd have to clean yourself up everytime. At least, that's what I'm assuming happens - the finish comes off and sticks to your hands?

Apple has a bit of a problem. I love their products, but they need to realize this inherent flaw. They spend so much time on their useability and their aesthetics, that they don't spend enough time on the useability of their aesthetics.

This is why Thinkpads are black, Apple. Learn from the master.

White shows discoloration.
Black doesn't.
