Apple today announced that they would start selling a 17” version of the popular iMac to educational institutes and students, signalling the death of the eMac. The education iMac pack less punch than its bigger brother with built in graphics, but at 400USD cheaper I’m sure enthusiasts won’t hold it against Apple.

The iMac will feature a combo drive for burning CDs and reading DVDs, as well as 512 DDR2 memory. Apple’s built in camera will feature in the iMac as well as the popular iLife suite. While Brits can be expected to pay £150 more than our American neighbours the price will obviously be welcomed among the education sector.

Distinguishing itself from the current 17” iMac this version has the integrated graphics, the lack of a DVD burner, no bluetooth or Apple Remote.

Wow thats pretty good, I hope that my schools gets a good few of them instead of what we have now, much quicker and half-decent screen resolution capabilities.

My school (the University of Waterloo) has been planning on upgrading its aging Mac labs (eMac-equipped) with new iMac machines for a couple of months now, but I'm sure the announcement of this new model will help things move along a bit quicker. Exciting news!

Great deal. Does iLife include a Word-like program, though? I'd love to see a good word processor included.

No, iWork includes 'Pages' which will read/write Word Documents. Quite basic. Has Publisher-like templates. It costs extra.

That's still not too bad, then. I guess it's better for those who already have a suite like Office and don't want to spend the extra money to get it pre-installed.

OS X has a word processor called TextEdit, which is a bit like a cross between Wordpad and Word.

Fairly reasonable price given that it has more horsepower than a Mac Mini Core Duo and comes with the 17" TFT built in.

Yay for Apple!

Why the crap is this considered "news"? I even got this story forwarded by my boss at work.

Wow, congratulations, Apple, on creating a lower end iMac model!

Is Neowin going to announce every new model of Dell that gets released if it is suitable for use in schools? What about Gateways or Compaq's or any other brand of computer?

Sheesh.

It's apple and it's education which is important to many due to education discounts.
