Microsoft's decision to push back the delivery date for Office 2007 may have a silver lining for some: it gives them all that much more time to try out the for-free preview, dubbed "Beta 2," before shelling out $149 to $679 for the real deal. And with Office 2007 Beta 2 still available -- Vista's test isn't -- there's still a chance to join in the fun. If fun is the word.

Office 2007 is, as nearly every reviewer has noted, a major departure from earlier editions. That alone may scare you off. Or maybe you're not easily frightened. In any case, here are five fine print particulars you should think about before putting Office 2007 through its paces.

Well, two good things to know: points 3 and 5. The rest is just there for the sake of saying it and reads like filler.

This article is about as 'backhanded' as you can get.

I like the new Toolbar, but the new looks are grosse. Also worth mentioning that Beta 2 is super slow compared to Office 2003. Beta 1 wasn't nearly as slow as Beta 2.

yeah!! it's freaking slow and on x64 the title bar of the VS sometimes overlays the new interface. Beta 2 is a ull feature mock but the reall thing needs to be refined

Poorly written.

As for this:

"After the February 1 cut-off, the suite "will continue to work in a reduced functionality mode that limits your options and operations," Microsoft says on its Web site."

I say it'll probably do the same thing Office 2003 (and 2007) does if you didn't activate it. It'll let you view files in read only mode (hence you can't edit or save the changes). Also a lot of the other features are removed ...

I know. A little research would have given you that information. A little bias from the journalist?

Office 2007 Beta 2 affects MS Works 7/8 and prevents it from working. The reason I heard for this, is because MS02007 comes with files for MS Works 9, but I've not heard of a Beta programming being run for Works 9.

This article is pretty crappy.

1) It's 450 megs. Not 550. And with today's broadband, that's nothing.
2) Valid, but it's an evaulation copy, what do you want?
3) This one is flat out wrong. Microsoft offers a Compatibility pack that'll let you use the new formats in XP and 2003.
4) The point was a revolutionary UI. Most people I've talked to are crazy about it.
5) Haven't run into a single issue with light usage...but It's beta, so I'm sure people who use it 24/7 would find more problems than me.

new UI isnt a good thing if you have to retrain thousands of employees to get used to it again. lost productivity as a cost to make it look good. typical M$!!!

WORK IN PROGRESS! Could the answer be any simpler. I agree with MioTheGreat... this article is just plain bull. Be glad you have a unique chance to preview the latest software. Currently you are working with stuff that most people wont see for the next 1 or 2 years.

Microsoft don't owe you ****. They might as well put an Flash animation up for download wich displays Steve Jobs playing with cow dung. Haha now that would be ever cooler then that ipod video.
