According to users going and complaining to Apple concerning the "whine" issue that has plagued first generation MacBook Pro users, Apple seems to have traced the problem down to faulty logic board problems.

Users are saying that Apple will supposedly replace the faulty logic board (covered under warranty) and that the new board requires Mac OS X 10.4.6, not the Mac OS X 10.4.5 installation that the Mac shipped with. As for now, this is all considered rumor and speculation as Apple has not made any official word on the problem.

I dont get why apple still calls them logic board's....i thought that was the name for the PPC version not the Intel

I have the same question, now that they have intel, I thought it will be more stable but apparently is the same bull****. I believe the problem is with apple, because they design and manufacture the board for the notebook and intel only supply the processor. apple never make a new product without issues and problems ;p

Sometimes the computer will make a bit of a whining sound its pretty high pitched and not very noticeable unless its quiet in the room. Mine makes it sometimes but I just tone it out now. Right now I cant hear it all because there are other computers running in the same room.

how can this be motherboard related? when i start the MBP into Windows, there is no whine, its got to be something to do with OS X

Windows has a bug, which causes the usb to remain active / put a load on the processor and therefore causes the processor to not whine as it is under load.

One of the windows updates fixes the bug, but then the processor whines just like in osx

I thought they solved this problem through a firmware update =/.

The big question is that is this whine sound a precursor to a bigger problem which in time could cause mass failures of the motherboard. Just like the G3 ibboks haich lasted for about a year then died.

Well I've got a mac Book Pro 15" model. Came with 10.4.6 so I guess it's a newer one. But it's been great, hot but great and no whine'ing noise.
