Grisoft, the maker of the popular free antivirus software AVG has announced that Microsoft has fixed a bug that was preventing AVG from installing on Vista Beta 2. You need to get an update though.

Peter Cameron of Grisoft’s Australian distributor Avalanche Technology said Vista Beta 2 users should obtain the Microsoft patch via Windows Update. “After application of the update, AVG products can be installed and used without any further problems or restrictions,” he said.

Would be good if AVG was actually any good.

it is good. If you are closed to it and dont want to see this fact is your problem but for a free AV is great.

AVG is very good.

I've noticed AVG misses tons of stuff when compared to other programs. Of course it's not really fair perhaps to compare a free program to a commercial one, but if you want to be safe isn't it better to pay up? AVG is very light on resources though, I can't really tell it's running. Avast is horribly slow though, that little globe just sits and spins constantly.

yes, AVG is utter crap. I've seen it compromised over and over again.

It's free and, well, you do get what you pay for.

I have yet to see (or even hear of) NOD32 compromised in any environment, btw.

It's a shame that free anti-virus programs like AVG and Avast support Vista but NOD32 does not... the last time I tried to install it I had to reinstall Vista.

Avast is working just fine on my Vista install here...

Ignore me. I read the comment above quickly and turned it into "Avast and AVG DON'T support Vista."

BTW Avast Home supports XP x64 but AVG Free don't. Does this updated version of AVG Free supports Vista x64?

For a free anti virus program you can't really complain lol.
either way if it's a big virus most people will just reinstall windows

How can you get the beta of Pc-Cillan? I've been trying to find a way to sign up to use it in Vista?

In order to use AVG with Vista Beta 2, you must download & install the Vista update here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=921583

Hit Ctrl+F and search for the update that applies to AVG.

... took me forever to find this. All the news reports (Monday) about this fix just tell you that Windows Update will take care of it... well, it certainly didn't in my case.
