I understand completely, the function of this update is totally obvious

Attention Site Admins: As you can see above, all of your smileys in the news posting system are not working correctly. The Blink one I used above doesnt display.

Correction, only smilies used in replies to comments in the newsposting system don't work. They have been broken for some time.

What does this do?

An patch for a beta.
Only from the mind of Microsoft.

What's the problem? The customer feedback system's busted in some instances, and this patch addresses it. It'll still be a while until the next beta (or RC) is released, so I'd rather see MS fix it so they can keep getting input from those beta users, than ignore the problem and not get feedback at all...

What's the rationale for your comment?

How do you expect them to test the patching ability in Vista if not during the beta? From the position of a Microsoft executive (or for that matter, anybody associated even in the slightest with Vista) wouldn't you want to make sure your next major operating system release has a nice, tested patching system in place before it is released to millions of people after it goes final?

I am fed up with people who think in this black and white manner. I don't wish (as linux or *nix user in general) to be compared to either of you.

Croquant, you should know criticism of Microsoft will not be tolerated around here. It's like criticising Apple on a Mac forum!

Criticism is fine. See: Microsoft often uses its position to push other companies around. But making truely idiotic comments where the OP must not know the definition of "beta" is not tolerated.

In short: people don't like comments attacking something which shows the OP has no idea what the words they are using mean.

Of course they would patch a beta. Especially when the downloads are large and the beta install base is huge.

And I was under the impression windows vista would allow users to experience less reboots when updating... Haven't had a single update to my beta 2 where I didn't have to reboot xD
