Intel has finally launched their new 'Core 2 Duo' and 'Core 2 Extreme' series processors this afternoon from their headquarters in California. Conroe desktop chip availability is set for 'early August' with the mobile Merom version arriving later on that month. Here's a quick rundown of the desktop chips with prices listed in USD:

Desktop Chips
  • Core 2 Extreme X6800 - 2.93GHz - $999
  • Core 2 Duo E6700 - 2.66GHz - $530
  • Core 2 Duo E6600 - 2.40GHz - $316
  • Core 2 Duo E6400 - 2.13GHz - $224
  • Core 2 Duo E6300 - 1.86GHz - $183
Preliminary benchmark results are handing the processor crown back to Intel, with a middle of the road E6600 Core 2 Duo chip giving an overclocked AMD FX-62 a run for its money. AMD tried to upstage the Core 2 Duo launch by detailing its new 4x4 and K8L platforms, which promise to close the processor performance gap before the end of the year.

It's sad that this turned out to be a paper launch only, with basically no availability except a tiny bit of the Extreme ones.

There is a BPN post, and I've treid TWICE to post a news article. Nice to see mine was completely disregarded..
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by Joel on 27 Jul 2006 - 18:34
Maybe the spelling example you just provided was a factor. Or maybe 8 other people submitted the same article as you. Or maybe the newsposter wrote this up himself, or didn't look at BPN or the submitted stories. And maybe one day people will realise that it's not a contest when they submit news. It's either posted or it isn't.

The newsposter (me) actually wrote this one up. I saw your post after this one was proofread and posted on the front page.

Intel is indeed back at the top. AMD has to now play catch up like Intel did in the past year.

Geez.. bit of a price jump between the E6700 and the X6800, huh? Myself, I'll take a E6600 and overclock the thing.

I'm waiting for the T7000 collection. Now those are going to rock the mobile platform.
Quote this comment #10.1 Posted by D-M on 27 Jul 2006 - 23:39
As soon as the T7000 comes out, then you will want the T10000. We all know the golden rule of buying new stuff, it's basically outdated the day you buy it. But that doesn't matter, because first you have to learn to utilize the equipment you have now, before you buy the next set of equipment.

Nice, I ordered an Athlon 64 X2 4800. Gotta love the price drop. What's that you say? I should have went with Intel? Gosh, over the years I have seen enough Intel chips in every last computer where I work. The last thing I want is to come home and see another one in my own computer. Maybe if/when the competition is a bit more balanced, I would consider Intel.

So many people have stuck with Intel despite the fact that AMD performed better. Now it's my turn to play that game.

Agreed Chugworth.
Quote this comment #11.2 Posted by reidtheweed01 on 27 Jul 2006 - 20:45
So if I just read that right you wont get an Intel because its better.

I hope you realize how dumb that sounds.

Well apparently you did not read it right. I gave my reasoning for not wanting an Intel chip. They have too big of a monopoly in the processor business. Which is why, because their new processor is faster makes no difference to me. Athlons still perform plenty fast, so it's not like I don't have an option.

Didn't it ever occur to you that there's a REASON you see so many Intel processors where you work?

If you don't like coming home to the same thing you have at work then go get a Mac ha ha ha.

Absolutely! Intel's marketing! Over the past few years, AMD has delivered a clearly better product.

What a horrible excuse. You know, all you're doing is becoming a corporate puppet rather than choosing what's best for yourself, and AMD thanks you for your unwaivering loyalty.

Well Intel has so many corporate puppets, AMD should have a few also. I simply prefer AMD as a brand, and that is a result of the unequal competition between the two companies.

I can't agree more!
This guy is very unwise.
I supported AMD when they had better products and better price.
After they have gained a little bit more market share, dang, they hold on to the high price.
Finally they cut their price by 50% before this Intel launch.
This shows how they treat their loyal customers.
Now, it is time they get some punishment.
Man, I can't believe I am going to buy my first Intel CPU in 10 years!
Forget about that guy.
He took advantage of the AMD price cut resulted from competition from Intel but at the same time he is reasoning his purchase on "unequal" competition. Poor irrational guy. He should have purchased the 4800+ a week before and spent 100% more to show AMD his absolute loyalty.

Everyone complains about bigger is better, but first you need to UTILIZE the equipment you have now, before you go bigger and so called better. The hardware war is way up front of the software programming, (obviously).

O look, I need a Quad Core chip, Quad Core video card, and 30 gigs of ram, just to play my video game.
Look MA!, I just added another computer to my mortgage payment!

I think like Chugworth back when AMD was superior than Intel last year but because Intel is a brand thats been here a long time and delivers much more than just processors for a whole lot more time than AMD has been making "decent" processors.

No matter what I will always have and trust a Intel processor in my system.

I pity the fools that care about calling me a "fanboy" when they could be doing some much more productive in their life...

Well! It's tome to wait LoL Let's see what AMD+ATI will do do battle Core 2 Duo and in Q3 2007 I'll update my system! I don't see any reason to dump my Athlon 64 3800+ and 2GB of DD400 (powered by a Geforce 6600GT) right now? They will handle everything OK for one more year don't you think (by that I mean Vista)?

Why DFI?

For maximum OC'ing and preliminary bugs (I love DFI FTR) In a sea of boards with topend VDimm for DDR2 of 1.8-2.2v, DFI will probably give us 2.5 or 2.7v. Every timing and drive strength, skew value we could possibly need for getting the most from our hardware will be there.

This release is so perfect in time for my planned upgrade since a year back or so for Hellgate London on Vista (one of those DX10 games). Unfortunately for AMD, even these upcoming processors may be a little bit too late for me.
