We’ve finally done it! Our ‘little’ project to bring you the next generation consumer mail application is going massively public. As of today (actually we slipped it out quietly last week or so) we are instituting a hassle-free sign up for the Mail Desktop beta. No beta invitation emails are necessary. Simply go through the process below and you should be up and running in minutes.
1. Go to ideas.live.com
2. Find the tile for “Windows Live Mail Desktop beta”
3. Click on “sign up” (if you’re NOT signed in with your Passport email address)
4. Click on “download” (if you ARE signed in with your Passport email address)
5. Walk through the beta agreement and accept.
6. Download and you’re done!
7. Be sure to sign into Mail Desktop with the Passport email address you used in step 3 and 4.
We’re driving hard toward our version 1 release and we need your help to locate those hard to find issues that you care about the most and to tell us what you think. We’re confident that you will find the beta very usable and we promise to send you a refresh very soon ( plenty of new goodies on the way).

In case you’ve forgotten, here’s some of the great things you get with Live Mail Desktop now:
· Junk and phishing protection
· Support for RSS feeds
· Photo email (share & publish your photos as slideshows to the internet)
· Blog it!
· 3 pane view of email
· Integration with Windows Live Messenger
· Active Search
· Multiple account aggregation
· Instant Search
· Free client access to your hotmail account
· Lots more and with even more to come!
Download: Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta

One more thing: our beta is supported. If you run into any problems, use this link to get support – http://support.live.com/eform.aspx?productKey=wlmaildesktop. We even have a support blog: http://wlmdbsupport.spaces.msn.com/PersonalSpace.aspx

Download and send us feedback – we can’t wait to hear from you. Spread the word.

*Direct sign up is only available if your Passport is a US Passport. We’re working to make this more broadly available. If you do not have a US Passport, you will be automatically directed to our waiting list. Once you submit your email address, we will send you an invitation as soon as we can

*Windows Live Custom Domains and MSN premium accounts are not supported by the beta program at this time.

You'll probably get warned for that.

God knows how many times I've been warned for saying similar things.

Anyways, actually it's a surprisingly decent program. Simple, but decent enough.

It came directly to me via the Microsoft Featured Community, nothing to do with Bink. Better luck next time

Has the beta been updated at all in recent weeks? Is there any new build to download?
#3 senthil on 27 Jul 2006 - 11:35
Yes it is very old news
#4 BIG_FREAK on 27 Jul 2006 - 11:47
Well I missed the News and I am trying it now looks kool so far
#5 Guol on 27 Jul 2006 - 11:47
Great program
(1 reply) #6 Bobster on 27 Jul 2006 - 11:50
Old news but I love this program!

Does anyone know of a 3rd party app that can minimize this to the system tray? If this program had it built in then it would be perfect.
#6.1 BBinder on 27 Jul 2006 - 14:17
send in a request for the feature it might help
#7 NeoFlux on 27 Jul 2006 - 12:05
Well, i logged out of the account, i don't find this bloody 'Sign Up' thing under Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta, nor do i see it when i am signed in, wtf?
#8 Stealth-X on 27 Jul 2006 - 12:06
This is nice =D
#9 GreenLemon on 27 Jul 2006 - 12:11
I still can't stand an app that has an ad in it. So, I've dumped this one.
#10 Gism0 on 27 Jul 2006 - 12:14
Sorry, but it looks like you won't be able to participate in the Mail Beta at this time.

This might be because:
Your account is with one of our partners and has additional features that Mail Beta doesn’t support yet
Mail Beta isn’t available in your area at this time

Is it not available in the UK or not available to passport.com people?

*is confused*

So i went to some of the threads talking about this and people posting the Sign Up link etc, but it redirects me to the Keep me informed page or whatever it is.

Edit: Seems the sign up link has appeared when i view the site in Firefox, but, it still redirects me to that "Keep Me Posted" link!
#11.1 Corky842 on 27 Jul 2006 - 15:00
It lets me sign in, read the license agreement, and takes me to this page. Maybe they designed it to not work in Firefox?
#12 haydn82 on 27 Jul 2006 - 12:18
I can't get it... No "Sign Up" - just "Get Updates" - Gutting...

This must be part of the new MS Mantra that they hailed so loudly last week, about openly supporting others, etc.

Clicking the "Check out the Windows Live Ideas page" link in Firefox does diddly squat, whereas in IE, you get to go to the correct page. Good ol' MS, you can always rely on them to say one thing and do the complete opposite. If they seriously believe I'm going to switch my browser just to test their software for them....

Why must they perpetually behave like spoiled brats, hiding their ball so that the others can't play too?

Assume all you want but if there is a problem with Firefox there's no way that was done intentionally.

Uh-huh, I guess the widely publicised same thing happening with their preview of the new homepage is our imagination too? http://www.informationweek.com/news/showAr...cleID=191100266 (Note it now shows the default homepage instead of erroring.)
#13.3 Smigit on 28 Jul 2006 - 09:57
Because they code it for IE then update it foe firefox. Whats the problem? Its a webpage for a beta product and the entire live site is in beta too. Firefox support HAS improved.

My Live ID profile is UK, yet it accepted me. I'm not complaining...

Is not bad, pretty nice.
#20 Vykranth on 27 Jul 2006 - 14:20
Does not seem to work with passport outside the US. Nevermind.

Why complain about the ads?

like whats the point its just 1 ad section on the right hand side its not gonna jump out ur screen and hurt you, sheesh like although neowin is a website its got more ads than windows live mail desktop
#21.1 Smigit on 27 Jul 2006 - 14:30
actually I found the program nigh on unusable while that ad remained. Had the ad being at the top or bottom I may have carred less but when the ad payne takes up 20% of the screen width for those on 17 and possibly 19 inch monitors you loose to much space, especially if you view emails in column mode (which again is alot easier on those with smaller monitors who dont have much screen height to work with).

If I had widescreen it'd be less of an issue, but on my 17 inch display I currently have (Im upgrading to a 24 wide soon) the ad was just too damn large to be practical.

ok i see your point about the ad, i did have it full screen didnt bother me much but then i made the screen smaller so it is a problem if ur not full screening on a decent resolution

but we can just ask MS to look at relocatating it to another area
#22 Smigit on 27 Jul 2006 - 14:27
I do like this program. One or two minor issues but on the other hand it has some functionality I would really love in their premier Outlook client. The notable being newsgroup support which STILL isnt a part of outlook and I havent been able to figure out why since OE has supported it for god knows how long and they are making newsgroups a quite integral part of this application. Ahh well.

The UI can be a bit busy at times. Thats my main gripe.
#23 Septimus on 27 Jul 2006 - 14:35
No ads if you have a 1GB account btw.
#24 Ironman273 on 27 Jul 2006 - 14:59
I downloaded the original Desktop Mail but got rid of it because I couldn't report mail as junk. I downloaded this one (since it states "Junk and phishing protection" and it still doesn't have a button to report junk mail. Am I missing something? I mean, even the web client at mail.live.com has junk reporting. Is this a different version than the one some weeks ago or jsut an easier way to sign up?

Sorry, but it looks like you won't be able to participate in the Mail Beta at this time.

This might be because:

* Your account is with one of our partners and has additional features that Mail Beta doesn’t support yet
* Mail Beta isn’t available in your area at this time
* You have a parentally controlled account
* Your Microsoft Passport indicates you're under 13

To find out more about our other beta programs, please click here.

And I still remain getting this error...

its an email client...not a toolbar...... ... ... . ... *sigh*
#27 excalpius on 27 Jul 2006 - 17:57
I use a hotmail account as a spam catcher, mostly because it is free. However, hotmail has the WORST junk mail filters ever. I get hundreds a day to that account that even a rudimentary filter recognizes as spam.

The GOOD NEWS is that this integrates very well with that hotmail account (even becoming the default mail client in messenger) and seems to have vastly improved junk mail filtering (at first glance).

I'll try this (it is a beta after all) for a while and see, but right now, as a replacement for hotmail's crappy built-in email handling, this is MUCH better in every way.
#28 Colin-uk on 27 Jul 2006 - 18:32
lets hope they improve the speed in the final release, its way too slow now

BLAST! It's not working with my account. I guess because I was MSN Premium for a while (back in the good ol' days of dialup).
Kinda random, but is there any info as to when these sorts of accounts will be supported? It seems kind of stupid, why not let us folks who actually used MSN in on this fun?
#32 harythewho on 28 Jul 2006 - 13:16
If you want to get rid of these ads, here's the link:

http://forum.mess.be/lofiversion/index.php/t17573.html

You need Resource Hacker to remove the ads. (It's free)
