- Good for you, AMD.
Now you can afford to halve the prices of your desktop CPUs. -

- My bet is more than 50% or even 75% of the average PC user doesn't even know what AMD is.

- What difference does that make? Most users probably don't know who Intel is. They've heard of them, but don't really know what they do.

- What I meant was, most people only know of "Pentium [insert number here]".

On that note, I'd say more people know what a "pentium" is than who Intel are or what they do.
edit: hah i just repeated what section said...grr

- This article is so poorly written and laced with bias...
"Intel is pinning its hopes of resurrecting its market share"
I would hardly call owning 70+% of the market in need of resurection. Now if they want to resurrect "growth" in the server market that makes sense, but it isn't too shocking to find misleading and sensationalistic comments on Cnet. -

- The part you quoted was taken directly from the cNet news article, so I would suggest you take your complaint up with them about that.

- Regardless of whether or not I had wrote it or taken it directly from CNET News, it isn't biased. Intel is trying to get the market share they've lost to AMD back and I'm sure they are upset they've lost the market share. It doesn't matter how much of the market a company has, unless it is 100% they want more. So how is it biased?

AMD on Monday said it increased its share of the x86 server processor market to 25.9 percent, a number confirmed by Mercury Research's Dean McCarron, who tracks market share figures. Intel now holds 72.9 percent of the overall market for x86 processors, while AMD has 21.6 percent.
Via Technologies is the third player in the mix with 5.5 percent share during the second quarter of 2006, but that figure was inflated due to end-of-life shipments of the company's C3 processor and will likely fall over the rest of the year, McCarron said.
Intel is pinning its hopes of resurrecting its market share--and its stock price--on the new Core generation of processors. The company launched the Core 2 Duo for desktops and notebooks last week during an event at its headquarters, and systems based on the new chips will start appearing over the coming weeks.
