Microsoft employee Nick White has posted some information on the Windows Vista team blog regarding the availability of RC1.

"Will Microsoft open testing sign-ups again when RC1 is released?
Yes.

Will the Customer Preview Program be available for those who missed out on Beta 2 to sign up and get RC1?
Yes.

If I participated in Beta 2 by downloading a PID and the build, will I be able to participate in RC1 automatically?
Yes.
"

Nick also hints that the latest build he has used is 5505. By Microsoft's own admission, RC1 should be released at some stage soon when the quality and stability reaches RC level.

These builds are moving pretty fast.

Hmm, it seems to me that they are throwing around the word RC quite a lot. I reckon that this will be like a beta 3, just under a different name to calm wall street. But heck, if it gets Vista into shape then I'm all for it.

That is kinda what I am thinking.

This will be RC1 = beta 3 ... people just want to hear "Release Candidate" so Microsoft is going to give them that.

Ah... nothings like waiting for a new OS

im actually really surprised that the public (at least people who signed up) will be able to download RC1. Beta 2 is pretty buggy still, and slow, so id like to see a polished version.

Beta 2 - as it stands, was rubbish. The lastest available builds are so much better, and on top of that..they plonk a RC on top of us.

I've been using 5472 on my test box at work, and I'm just about ready to commit to using it on my main box (dual booting with XP just in case) but if RC1 is going to be out in a few weeks I will wait...I know you can't upgrade between builds so there's no point getting Vista configured how I like it then having to blow it away That's what the test box is for....

Rumour had RC1 pinned for an August 15th release, so a release sometime this month is likely.

I would say that this build will be greatly improved upon the Beta 2 release many of us are testing, and it should be as polished as Windows ME, if not more polished. Remember that there are more testers for this OS than any other in history (probably more than any other product in history), so bugs should be at a minimum.
And when the RTM gets released, I think that most of the immediate patches will be security updates... but there shouldn't even be too many of those.

Anyone doubting that MS will make the Vista launch? I work in a retail store (when I am not studying) and we are currently beginning to recieve brochures on Vista, it's versions and it's requirements. Not saying that its guaranteed to make a Jan launch, but a Q1 launch should be expected.

- How can you compare Vista with ME?

- Are there any other types of updates?...I know there are, but 90% of all updates coming from MS...are security related!

Don't stress, I am comparing the beta versions to me in terms of stability... not the finals. The finals should be as stable as 2000.

Wait i'm confused?

I downloaded Beta 2 but havent installed/activated it yet? Does this mean I qualify for RC1?
Quote this comment #9.1 Posted by mrmckeb on 11 Aug 2006 - 13:13
I don't think you do...

YES! You do qualify. I was reading that on the Vista Blog site. I'm just not sure the way of going about the download. If you signed up for the Beta2 DVD.. .then you will get the RC1 DVD in the mail. At least, that's what the Vista team is saying.

I've been pretty critical of Vista but to be honest i'll be looking forward to trying out RC1. Beta 2 was pretty ropey for me, but i'm hoping this will be a smoother experience all round.

Fair point - Beta 2 really wasn't ready for public consumption and later builds felt a lot better to me.
