Nearly a year ago Google said it would be offering its hometown Mountain View, California free wireless broadband. Today, it unveiled GoogleFi, offering a 1mb connection for everyone. The Mountain View network that cost nearly a million dollars to build went live at 9pm PST today. The service, which covers 11.5 miles doesn't include any advertising, and Google even offer free software that allows secure access by creating a virtual private network.

While Mountain View has been a small project for Google, it looks like San Francisco could be next on the map to receive free broadband, but for now Mountain View remains the testing ground for Google's new venture. In San Francisco, a deal with Earthlink would see Google offering a two tier service, with the free option having ads supplied by Google and a 300kbps speed and the paid subscription being ad-free and with speeds of over 1mbps.

i only have a 768kbit connection and i have to pay $15
haha

Sounds to me like the 300k connection with ads will be free outside of their home area. For no ads and faster line, you would have to pay.

Move over Microsoft, Google is coming past you!

It will go belly up, some monopoly commission will try and fine them.
