An issue has been identified that may cause you to lose access to protected media music, videos, and recorded TV after upgrading to Windows Vista RC1. You can help prevent this scenario by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Does that mean that RC1 is coming soon?

This is an excellent example of what concerns me most about DRM. A "glitch" that disallows the properly-licensed from being able to access their media.

Well usually I kinda hate this comment, but in this case it's suitable

"It's beta" :p

Oh! Vista is beta. So this situation could never happen on RTM software (Microsoft, Sony, Apple, whatever).

My error. How stupid could I possibly be???

The reality: DRM is software. Software is flawed.

Yes, this has little to do with it being beta. Sure, this bug may have been due to it, but not the design flaw.
The design flaw in DRM'ed music will remain after Vista is released, and as soon as the next bug related to this appears, people will be put into this situation again.

The problem is that you're purchasing encrypted content (why one'd be as stupid to do that is beyond me though), so it's absolutely essential that all software designed to decode and playback the content work perfectly. If the music is not encrypted, there's on the other hand simply no way you can be put in a situation where you can't access your files, unless you'd get a corrupted harddrive or file system.

Come on guys, he was joking, the ":p" is supposed to mean something

But yeah, DRM sucks in all possible interpretations of the word

My tupence states that the problem wouldn't exist at all if you avoided DRM... You won't get me on that.

Right – and teenage girls wouldn't get pregnant if they would avoid having sex.

Great advice, Einstein.

I havent even used the Vista side of my system - too many other hardware issues and software glitches - I'll call Bill and see if I can get something straightened out for all us neowinians - hope he doesnt forward my call over to Ballmer again - that guy bugs me - always "Hey Chris when are we going out ?, When are we going to the game ?, Hey Chris, old buddy 'ol pal, when are we going out on your boat ??" - what a mooch !

It's pretty easy, if you don't want this to happen to you then don't buy stuff with DRM, simple enough...

I'd like to see a cheap, legal, and convenient alternative then.

Buy the optical media and rip it. It's yours and you can make a backup. If you're in some dictatorship country that restricts fair use / spaceshifting, then stand up for your rights.

How Ironic that dictatorship happens to be USA! RIAA's home! not a third world country

The problem is that some people would rather trust a flawed system than trust its users. I've bought hundreds of non-protected MP3's from allofmp3.com, and I haven't shared a single of those files. The paranoia of certain individuals is what feeds this crap.
