Microsoft has quietly released build 5536 for the first 100,000 people to download it from their Windows Vista site.
5536 was recently released to tech testers and is the best build that has ever been officially released.
Be quick and get 5536 before Microsoft closes the downloads at 100,000.

err..good question..is this going to be the same version as RC1 or I have to re-download RC1 when it comes up and do another reinstall?
Some of these issues I'm experiencing include:
- The computer crashing when resuming from hibernation/sleep
- The display properties window popping up on every boot (could be a driver issue)
- Volume up/down controls broken
- General slowness with the login process, particularly sidebar (although the whole OS speed has improved since Beta 2)
- Issues with applications running from a network location that need privledge escalation
- Several other minor things
I presume most of these will/already have been fixed in time for RC1.However, my question would be - Is there going to be a easy pre-RC1 to RC1 download update... or am I going to have to download an entirely new ISO to get RC1?
Obviously, I'm going to get a completely new ISO anyhow. But a fat patch file would make the upgrade simpler...
Broadband has a wide definition, in Australia we have ADSL2+ being rolled out which does 24Mbit/s but the 50% owned government ISP Telstra still uses ADSL1 and caps it to 256Kbit/s 512Kbit/s 1536Kbit/s mainly because they don't want to roll out ADSL2+ and provide it at lower cost than it cost them to other ISPs

I also couldn't use the downloader, I was getting the same access denied message as the people above. Downloading it in the browser using the direct link is working fine though. /shrug
use the beta 2 one
Beta 2/CPP keys work, as they have for all previous builds.
This is decidedly un-Microsoftish....basically a *stealth release*.
It was interesting that it didn't have a new keyset... let's hope they keep this up for the actual RC1
This is true ...
This release, IMO, is just a refresh for the people who have beta 2.
This pre-RC1 is not where I would be hopping into the beta process - grab the next major "beta" release.
My problem with Vista so far: MSN Premium will not longer install they are dropping this for Windows Live but yet again this is a real pain in the butt.
Also Diskeeper will not intall but I do not believe in Windows defrag.
There are some other small problems with this but I will wait until they get this all solved.
belto...
Yes it is basically the same but with Diskeeper you can defrag multiple drives on the fly at the same time with no loss in your jobs. Windows is basically a strpped down version minus the many features that you get with the professional premium editon of Diskepper 10.

It means you spend way too much time defragging and not enough time using your OS. Run defrag as a scheduled task at the wee hours of the night. Is it really that important to you to run it NOW?

Joel,
I did not even come close to mean or say that at all, only you assumed this. I just stated that I prefer Diskeeper over Windows. And I set Diskeeper to automatically defrag my all my disks and I do not even notice it, besides diskeeper only defrags when necessary.

Assuming we all leave our PCs on overnight and waste world resources
The answer is that Microsoft need a better filesystem that doesn't need to be defragged (as often)
Reiser4 ftw?
i dont actually have a dvd burner so im hoping i can mount it or something to that effect.
it means RC1 is NEAR. bwahaha.
also. notice the file size. 3200mb? come on, its a test file.
i'll bet if u download it, u will notice that its all either random data or zeros!

"This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system
that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification."
WTF? so no OS at all! anyone got any ideas.?

Get back in your box where you belong. They work perfectly fine on my NVIDIA card now so stop jumping to conclusions.
Does anyone have any experiences of 5536 vs 5552?
Haven't heard much about differences in the sense of speed or stability though.
my soundcard and netcard was installed by windows, i've always had to install those drivers myself
