Less than a week after pricing details leaked from Microsoft Canada, Amazon have listed Windows Vista Ultimate Edition for $399.

Amazon gives little details about Vista but lists a release date of 30th January 2007. According to recent reports, Windows Vista RC1 is in escrow and is likely to be released next week. If RC1 surfaces next week then it's likely Microsoft is on track for Vista providing there isn't as many as 3 release candidates.

During the Whistler (XP) beta Microsoft took less than 2 months to finalise XP after RC1 was released. If Vista RC1 is released next week then it's still possible that Microsoft could deliver Vista to corporate customers late in November.

damn straight... any version of windows if u ask me should never be over 100 dollars for the average joe... maybe something like 150-200 for businesses but thats about it.

but me personally i dont really care about vista since XP is good enough as it's really stable (which is the number one thing im conserned with on pc's) and just works.... so basically vista is just a more bloated version of xp which i see as a bad thing overall.

about only thing it might be noticeably better than windows xp is automatic hardware detection.

Woah, that's £210 but knowing rip-off-britain they'll whack an extra few quid on to that.

I will probably be buying vista but damn £250 would be pretty steep, I guess i'll be getting the upgrade version anyway, that is if an xp home oem disc is applicable

Yeah, it is a bit on the expensive side. There's not much point getting it immediately, though, as you're just going to run up against lots of compatibility issues. It might be worth considering when the price comes down and more hardware is supported but, for the 64bit version, I'll imagine it will take a while - my soundcard isn't currently supported.

They could finalise it tomorrow or a year from now if they liked, still doesn't mean it'll be bug free.

Why do you guys want Ultimate? Even if I had a million dollars, I'm either getting Business or Home Premium. I don't believe there is 1 person on these forums who has any need for the Ultimate version. Go check what is included in it.

Secondly, who here does not have Windows XP? You can buy the upgrade version of Vista which is significantly cheaper.

Thirdly, you do not have to install XP to upgrade to Vista -- you just need the XP cd key.

All in all, the one you want is only $150 USD

Meh, don't bother, most of the senseless commentators know they talk none sense... yet they can't stop them self.

if you are buying a system from Dell, they wont offer you the upgrade version. They will add this 399$ to the price. wont they?

most dell systems probably won't offer ultimate though, they'd probably have a choice of home premium or ultimate.

Dell is just an example. other vendors do add this to the price tag. and moreover, this discussion is based only on ultimate edition but not "if not".

Unlikely OEM prices tend to be much lower.

I thought Ultimate and just Home Premium + Enterprise, but in the forums section i read they Ultimate will have some special game mode that will shut down a good amount of processes so game can play better. I hope that is not true and they offer this game mode if true to all Vista versions. Im looking at Home Premium, I may lose the PC gaming and stick with consoles, and have the PC for Media Center. Upgrade does seem the best, its still a clean install and not a upgrade from XP.

I agree exactly with you. All most people do need is home premium or buisness upgrade which are likely to cost £100 gbp/$150 usd/ $199 cad, which really isnt to much at all. In fact just a little of what an xp home upgrade cost 5 years ago. And as these are retail products you can use them to upgrade your existing xp system (even if its a pirate) and whats stopping you from activating it twice...

Don't you guys think that it's a bit misleading to have the phrase "goes on sale" in this (non-)story title? I mean we're talking about a delivery date five months into the future!

If this bogus "story" was even worth bothering with (which it isn't), at best the phrase "available for pre-ordering" should have been used.

Bah! Humbug!

Concerts "go on sale" well before the event date. It is a common expression, man. Relax a bit.

No, concert tickets go on sale well before the event date. If you don't understand the distinction, I'm sorry.

"its called Pre-Order"

Duh...

"...the phrase "available for pre-ordering" should have been used."

In any case, my problem isn't with Amazon and the pre-ordering process, it's with the story title which implies that one can buy Vista now. It's a tiny bit of yellow journalism that's most people would feel is no big deal. That doesn't make it any less yellow.

The sooner this actually comes out, the more bugs it will have. If it gets rushed to market, it'll be a disaster of an OS.
Quote this comment #8.1 Posted by Leo Natan on 30 Aug 2006 - 12:55
5536 is quite fine with the bugs department, only few here and there... If you remember the days of the XP RCs, it's quite the same, just final touches.

Amazon is notorious for errors like that, just check out the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars minis it has listed coming out soon, they are listed as hard-back books. Their quality control on the listings when they are added is pretty much a joke...

"Windows Vista will retail for 399 US Dollars"

Remind you of something?

And, yeah, it costs the same as the Xbox 360. Coincidence? I think not.

Where can we go to pre-order the semi stable version of Vista w/ SP2?

Vista has not been released, so there are no service packs yet. :p

How can people actually 'review it' - Thats just pure stupidity. Even if they have played with the Betas, its hardly a full relection on the released version.

I like Xp because it's stable, and unlike many people I take backups of my sensitive data so I'm ready to jump right in to Vista. Don't see why I SHOULDN'T fix what works.

The price tag is a bit high though... but that's just Ultimate.

Think of XP being Windows 98 Second Edition, then think of Vista being Windows ME !

I like this guys rant on Amazon regarding Vista.

Quote -

Emperor Gates can't possibly hope to pass this latest monstrosity off to the discerning consumer as anything other than the mastubatory monument to code bloat that it is.

Vista is the endgame of a deranged and diseased monoculture, whose products' few redeeming qualities owe more to the inspiration of others than to the misfiring neurons that populate Redmond.

Given the retail pricing recently revealed, any consumers foolish enough to walk once more the path of hopeless despair and self-flagellation entailed in the purchase of Micro$hat's most recent excretion must unfortunately be considered masochists. Whilst this behavior is tolerated in some nations, it is considered a mental disorder in others - and rightfully so.

Although most of us enlightened enough to escape the binary singularity that is Micro$haft have already done so, some yet remain who can be saved even at this late juncture. Shine the light of OSX to all who will listen. Let Vista be crushed beneath the weight of it's own corporate indifference and retail extortion.

$399 is absolutely ridiculous.

vista hasn't hit real world market so you can't say it's Windows ME QUITE yet
