Beta 2 of Mozilla Firefox 2.0 has just appeared on the Mozilla FTP in the release folder, it's safe to say that this is Beta 2 and not a pre-beta.

Firefox 2 provides the same clean, streamlined, interface as previous versions, with small improvements to make it easier to use. In addition, it includes improved security features and useful tools to make the Internet experience safer, faster, and better than ever before.

Good news. I will have to wait until my bookmark sync extension updates, which may not happen until 2.0 goes final but should be worth the wait. That said I'm more so looking forward to version 3.0 mid next year.

So far so good. My google homepage remembers me again. The first beta made me sign in each time even after I told it to remember me. The phishing filter doesn't bark about an internal website, unlike a certain other browser beta.

For those with extension issues... nightly tester tools is your friend.

One great feature of Firefox 2.0 will be ability to undo closed tabs (functionality in there since beta 1) and the browser will lack a button to do this...so I created an extension to undo closed tabs and added some other neat features to it, like a history list and pref to adjust number of closed tabs to remember and ability to clear the list. A few dozens users here and a couple hundred users of mozillazine and people that downloaded from AMO have said this a must have. Ok enough spamming my extension, get it here:

Undo Closed Tabs Button or AMO Link

As its name strongly suggests, Firefox 2 beta 2, is a an unfinished product aiming beta testers, areas that don't work and are not supposed to are documented in the release notes.

The target audience for this version is the geek that will say :
"I experiment a bug when doing x, y, z on an https site using some fancy ajax call, I have filed bug #1234 about this issue with steps to reproduce the bugs and my relevant system details"

The target audience is NOT somebody that doesn't understand why his fafourite extension stopped working or why there is this or that bug, in other words, don't install beta software if you don't want to do beta testing or are geek enough to manage temporary issues. You should at least wait for a RC release, if Firefox 2 was ready for Joe User today, it's release date wouldn't be late October...

Not that big of a jump from Firefox 1.5, not worth an upgrade or even a .5 point revision IMO

The default theme is the worst I've ever seen in a browser. The "designers" who made it should be send to the Phantom Zone and never be allowed back.

Seems overdone to me. Seeing something glossy on a plain background, that is. Either they skin the background too or stick with the old Luna-like icons.

The beta has actually been on the firefox ftp site for over a week now. It was located in another folder. :p

Those were nightlies. They activate beta branding about a week in advance, and between that time and the actual release they fix any serious bugs.

Learn how the development cycle works.

What is the difference between this version vs Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20060821 Minefield/3.0a1?
I know lot of times been explained by other to others but one more time....

Thanks

Your version is a work in progress for what will one day be called Firefox 3, it only includes major changes to the rendering engine and the underlaying structure as well as experimental stuff like the next bookmarking system (places).

It is highly unstable and only meant to be used by Mozilla developpers (even beta-testing makes little sense with this).
It is the engine that uses the crossplatform Cairo backend graphics engine and all the rewriting of a big chunk of Gecko (reflow branch) that should solve almost all CSS/HTML visual issues still remaining in the product and considerably improve rendering performance of some specific complex layouts. This is the version that passes the ACID2 test.

Firefox 2b2, on the contrary, is based on the same engine as Firefox 1.5, Gecko 1.8.x instead of Gecko 1.9 for Minefield. It is an improved Firefox 1.5 with a faster rendering engine, many small but useful features in the User Interface, lower memory consumption and more generally, a product clearly targeted at features for end-users.

Bug found with Download Manager. Downloading WMP11 Beta 2, and while at 5.5meg/22meg the progress bar is almost at 50%, but on taskbar it shows the correct download %.
