Microsoft Corp. announced Tuesday U.S. prices for Windows Vista, the long-awaited new version of the operating system that sits on more than 90 percent of the world's PCs. Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, also reconfirmed its plan to target a general launch of the product in January after making it available to large-volume business customers in November.
Windows Vista, already five years in the making, has been postponed by Microsoft several times. The software maker set the retail price for Vista at between $199 to $399, ranging from the basic version to the top-end "ultimate" edition. For customers upgrading from Windows XP, Vista will cost between $100 and $259.

Its not much different than the pricing of XP and 2000 at first launch.
Business: full $299, upgrade $199.
Home Premium: full $239, upgrade $159.
Home Basic: full $199, upgrade $99.95.
Ultimate: full $399, upgrade $259.

Yeah... it COULD be worse. It COULD be better, too. But, think positively people.
Considering how many hours you spend using the OS and how many years the OS will be supported/years until you need to upgrade, your looking at something like $30 - $50 a year depending on how fast they get the OS out. It's not to expensive at all really.
Considered how much it cost to keep current with osX its not a huge different. Sure you dont need to upgrade that OS and thus it remains cheaper but then again you dont yet NEED to upgrade to vista.
I'll be interested to see what versions go on MSDNAA seeing as I can get windowes for free via my uni or at the worst about half price via the uni stores (I think a rough currency conversion puts Office2003 Professional or XP Pro at about $80US a pop)
Meawhile, the Software Pirates of the world and their young code-cracking friends are busily awaiting the RTM release of Windows Vista Ultimate.
On that note I'm a heck of a lot more interested in the OEM prices than the retail (full or upgrade) editions.
its the same as Windows XP!
and Windows 98!
and Windows 95!
$99 to upgrade Windows after 5 years?
$129 to upgrade MacOS X every year?
again, another reason why Microsoft is on top, and everyone else is fighting for scraps at the bottom.
Realistically, as the article states, 90% of people already have Windows XP.
Realistically, if you looked at the features on the webpage, no one should need Ultimate. Not even a nerd. No, Ultimate is just for those with a lot of money who think they are getting extra.
The $99 upgrade should work for everyone. Or, if you have Media Centre Edition XP -- you get a free upgrade to Windows Vista. Yes, $0.
