- Good thing I have a MSDN account.

- I honestly haven’t bothered looking since RC1. When this version was made available to the public, I figured I'd give it a whirl since RC1 would blue screen on me with Memory Management errors. My company tests software and my group has a MSDN account to use when we feel we should test again. I'll definitely make sure I pick this one up on Fri as 5728 has been extremely solid for me so far. I have had some software incompatibilities (Google Toolbar and Keopi's Xvid Codec)... but that’s to be expected at this point.

- This is great news (if it actually happens as claimed).
... now only if MSFT can get the VS 2005 SP1 (non-beta) build up, then we can finally [reliably] develop applications against the RC's and RTM Vistas.

- I hate to say it, but the operating system as it stands is NOT RC2 material. Beta 2, perhaps.

- you would be surprised how much work can be done with the WDT.
-
#10.2 Posted by Dr.Jones on 03 Oct 2006 - 04:51
- WDT warning and display terminal (US DoD)
WDT Watch Dog Timer (embedded systems)
WDT Western (Europe) Daylight Time (GMT+0100)
What does WDT mean !?

- This will just be another intermin build. Thurrott is false due to the fact that this build will NOT be forked and its just going to be an intermin renamed RC2. Unless its forked its not a true milestone.
Again he goes pulling information out of his couch cusions.

- Uhh every external release is branched from main.

- Yea I think he just stated dont let the name fool you as its just another interim build as we know its not going to be publically available. Don't say hes pulling information out of his ass "again" (btw what do you mean by again hmm). Im pretty sure Paul Thurrot knows what hes talking about. In other words what he meant was there will be a final interim build that will show up as "Windows Vista RC2 Evaluation Copy.Build 5743" even though it really it isnt an RC2 build.

What do you mean? That's exactly what Thurrott is saying.
I quote Thurrott:Quote -But don't let the name fool you: RC2 is really just a standard interim build of Vista and will not be given out to millions of users as was RC1.
He doesn't even use the word "fork" either, so stop putting words in his mouth too.Quote -Again he goes pulling information out of his couch cusions.
It's rather that others are misattributing people.

- No matter what people say about Thurrott, everyone will still go to his site and read his articles, so give the guy a break already!

- Oh, I didn't know there was going to be one! :o
Explains why they named the first RC1 and not just RC though :p -
#15.1 Posted by jhatcher16 on 03 Oct 2006 - 09:25
- RC1 would generally have still been called RC1, because it was the first release candidate, regardless of whether another RC would have followed it or not.
It's increasingly looking like we're not going to see any major changes in the RTM...

- indeed ^

- Quote -No, I wonder why one should have expected otherwise. MS would be pretty nutty to introduce anything major in a late RC build.
Indeed, the last few builds [RTM, RC2, and RC1] will never get any new features added. They are basically the "final" builds and the only things that are changed are the bugs. Adding new features could introduce newer bugs and hence delay the shipment time.

- Quote -That documentation also notes that there are over 1400 open bugs in Vista at this time. Microsoft's internal processes require this bug count to drop to 500 or fewer before they will attempt to go into escrow for RTM. By comparison, there were over 2479 bugs on September 22.http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/Index...=rss&subj=0

- I'm running 5728 as my main OS and it's completely stable.
There was a problem with cdrom.sys preventing me from running cd/dvd emulation software, but using RC1's version fixed that.
Another problem using the nvidia ethernet driver for my M2N-SLI Deluxe, but using a previous verison also resolved the issue.
I welcome this new one.

- so we all (general public) get this one right?
-
#20.1 Posted by jhatcher16 on 03 Oct 2006 - 17:36
- Quote -The RC2 build is 5743, and Microsoft is currently testing it internally. As with the previous interim build, 5728, RC2 will be given out to beta testers, MSDN and TechNet subscribers, and a random, limited selection of Consumer Preview Program (CPP) members. (CPP = us)

#20.2 Posted by MarvnDuran on 03 Oct 2006 - 18:10
- That means somebody will post a link to the download page, like last week.
BUT you still need a valid key to use it. Those are the ones that are not available.
BTW, they could just name RC35, or Vista Preview Edition, what counts is the build number. Sheesh.

Microsoft this Friday will ship the final pre-release version of Windows Vista and, unexpectedly, will name the release as Release Candidate 2 (RC2). Previously, Microsoft had publicly asserted that it would not ship an RC2 milestone release of Windows Vista. But don't let the name fool you: RC2 is really just a standard interim build of Vista and will not be given out to millions of users as was RC1.
