Microsoft has just released build 5744 of Vista for Technical Beta testers on Microsoft Connect.

On the connect website it says: Windows Vista RC1 (5744-16384) is here!

Jim Allchin's post on Connect:

People asked for it, and here it is, Windows Vista RC2! We wanted you to be the first to get these bits; next week they’ll be available to a broader set of customers via MSDN and TechNet.

All your great feedback has helped us focus on nothing but bug fixes over the past month since RC 1 — each and every day. There are thousands of quality improvements since Windows Vista RC1. You’ll probably notice improvements in performance, application compatibility, as well as fit and finish work. We will continue improving quality until RTM. If you are an ISV, please use this build (certainly at least RC1 or later) to get certified. Visit www.innovateonvista.com for more information on logo certification.

You are integral to this creation and refinement process. We are just around the corner from RTM and shipping this great product to the world. This will be the last build made available prior to RTM, so please keep the feedback coming so we can hit the finish line. Thanks for your help in finishing the job!

Who cares if it's RC2 or not?! The only important things are the removed bugs and performance improvement.

Its labelled RC2 in the build string & the website for public download that they took down called it RC2, i don't get it

It's labelled RC2, it's announced as RC2, it's got MS posts saying it's RC2, you might want to edit the news header to call it RC2. Don't be picky...

Your source is Jim Allchin's post on Connect:

It clearly states on the CPP Download page that this build has not gone through the same testing and is not up to the same standards as RC1. If it was a true RC2 wouldn't it have to go through the same testing and hold up to the same standards as RC1? 5744 is just a nether interim build with RC2 stuck on so MS can say they shipped a RC2.

And how would you know that?

RC2 did in fact branch from the main RTM line and revved a few times to make sure it was worthy of the RC2 label.

This build (5744) has a number of improvements and updates from previous builds, and has been through daily testing processes to refine quality and performance. We are making this release available for a limited time only (and only by download) in order to get broad distribution and testing in a variety of PC configurations. Please note: This build may not have the same level of support or servicing via Windows Update as RC1, and you may not be able to upgrade from this build to the final version of Windows Vista.

^I personally suspect they just search-and-replaced the text from the 5728 CPP release on the RC1 page, though, and it probably has had proper "RC"-level testing.

If Microsoft says it's an RC2, it is an RC2. Microsoft defines which of their products are an RC or not, no one else. Maybe received less testing than RC1, but that makes sense as it's later in the cycle (less bugs should be there in the first place and less changes from build to build), and it also doesn't change the fact that it can be an RC2. I really don't get why outsiders lacking insight in the build process have problems with Microsoft's naming on this one.
Quote this comment #8.5 Posted by M118LR on 07 Oct 2006 - 19:19
Then why is it a EDW build, which is an interim build from the RTM branch. Shouldn't RC2 come from the RC2 branch.

They obviously cut & pasted from Connect, since on Connect it incorrectly says "Windows Vista RC1 (5744-16384) is here!" under the New Content section.

I will just wait until RTM is released on Connect and I'll get it then...unless there are substantial changes in this build over last one, there isn't really a reason to use up bandwidth for it!

There won't be an external RC3... and i really doubt another build will make it to general beta testers. Though, we may see a few more builds being released to TAP members.

I did a fresh install of RC1 and the install was fast. Something like 17 minutes? I'm very impressed. All in all the OS is running better than the Beta build. Nero (Ok, Windows) says that, Nero has a compatability issue. I still ran it - the only difference I saw was, my 24x driver burns at 8x max. Firmware update should take care of that, I'm sure.

Another thing I noticed that, unless I have my Wifi router broadcast its' SSID, Vista gives me a "Limited Connectivity", when I enable it (SSID) all is fine. Sent a bug report on this. Anyone having the same issue w/ this?

Also getting Code 43 error with an ATi card... I don't have much faith that this will get fixed. I filed a bug report the past 3 CPP builds and still no dice.

Those of you who are getting error 43 with your video card might want to check your SMbus drivers....

It's peppier and seems to use a bit less memory (about 45% of a gig at idle versus about 55% with 572

But support-wise, it's not even close to RC2 material-- it's mid-beta material.

One out of three updates didn't work.

The RealTek HD Audio drivers available for download cause it to pop up a "something's wrong" box, and the pack-in ones, while perhaps more stable, are fundamentally broken (you can't control individual inputs, like to say, turn the CD audio or line in up)

A sensible approach IMO would be a "freeze" of the final release 3 to 6 months prior to putting it on sale, so third parties can get their act together and the product is ready for delivery.

It's not a Linux distribution being maintained as a hobby. It's a fairly expensive commercial productr being backed by the world's largest software house. I'd expect commercial-quality compatibility. If necessary, I expect Microsoft to buy racks of obscure scanners, printers, and sound cards off ebay and write the damn drivers themselves!

Sadly I don't think it would have any effect. Most hardware developers are just lazy and only support a new version of Windows when it is required for continued business. Only after Win2000 had some momentum behind it did drivers start to get released for it and even then it was pretty slow - I imagine it will be quicker for Vista because it is a consumer product and that is where the most money is. All the extra time would do is allow a few decent developers to improve support and allow pirates to run the leaked version long before paying customers.

My soundcard (EMU 1820M) still doesn't have any drivers for Vista and there is no timeframe. I also imagine half the scanners and modems out there will also stop working, as there was a similar problem with XP. Ah well, it's not really Microsoft's fault.
