- Can I use RC1's sn for this build?
-
#3.2 Posted by Chicane-UK on 07 Oct 2006 - 10:34
- Thats why they specifically state that this is for people taking part in the CPP - ie those who registered back at Beta2 for legitmate serial numbers!

- Downloaded and installed on my Mac
All I need is to activate it.
I'm only using it for games and for Office 2007, but I have already noticed a problem with a game. I know it's still RC, but there is not much time left... I wonder how this will end
Quick note : Why does it still take 45 minutes to install ? I got my hopes up when the green bar at the bottom was almost full, but then it said : Loading windows for the first time...... 10 more minutes, detecting your computer speed and settings ..... 10 more minutes..
Another quick note : I am STILL NEVER able to connect to my wifi network... I wonder what's the problem.. maybe because I use WPA2-Personal? I even configured it to use this encryption type, nothing worked.
Games are slow and buggy. I have tested Half Life 2 Episode 1 for example and it showed nothing good. On XP, I max out the graphics, but certainly not on Vista. I have to cut them by half.
How do we unintsall this? Vista is prematured and I want to go back to XP... which doesn't appear in the boot menu...

- You have to boot back into Vista and choose XP as the default os, also uncheck the "display list of operating systems" box to stop the selection screen from appearing. Alternatively you can use the XP install cd and restore the master boot record.
This is all assuming you didn't do an upgrade from XP or install Vista over it. -

What part of Vista do you access to find these options?

- Will Vista ask to create a new partition if I don't want to install it over XP, or do I have to do that beforehand?
-Spenser
-
#15 Posted by bmetelsky on 07 Oct 2006 - 15:30
- It will ask if you want to install it on a partition if you already have one. I am not sure what it will do if you try to install and there is not a partition for it.

- Downloaded Windows Vista build 5744 last night around 7:00 PM EST burned the DVD and installed. Updated from 5728 and looks like it took longer to install than the previous build. Looks like two more of my applications bit the dust and ar no longer compatible with Vista. Heres a quick rundown of what I was using prior to Vista Beta's
Easy Media Creator 8 (Nope not compatible)
Microsoft Works 8 (Again not compatible)
Microsoft Plus! for XP (Nope not compatible)
Norton Internet Security 2005 (Again not compatible)
Norton Systemworks 2005 (Not compatible)
Upon installations of all the builds I have tested says my generic wifi card wouldn't work but upon completion of installation it does work.
Finally got my HP 2350 installed and functioning properly in build 5744
Looks like my system rating went down from a 3.0 to a 2.4 overall so maybe they changed the ratings curve on this build.
Haven't had alot of time so far to work with 5744 but 5728 was pretty stable for me and looks like a few more enhancements were made to the installer, mostly fit and finish work looks like it complete. I think this build will be similar.
In 5728 I was having a problem with manually downloading updates and came up with an error and even tried leaving the machine on to retrieve updates automatically and it didn't so lets see if 5744 fixes that problem.
In build 5728 the dreaded wifi problem was plaguing me and lets see if they managed to fix that as well in 5744.
I have a 256 MB GeForce 6200 and the GUI seems slower so far on this build maybe they changed something from 5728. My machine is no slacker and I am thinkin what I have to spend $2,000 to have a good rig. But looks like time for a direct X 10 card when Vista ships to RTM.

I created a new space on MSN Live spaces and would like to make new friends please feel free to check it out and I encourage you to share any ideas or feedback you may have for me.

- Tried it on a D820 (been using this laptop since Beta 2...), not bad - but it takes 10 GB for a fresh install (thank goodness I have a 80 gb hd). Graphics seem to slow down the machine more since RC1, not sure why. Also the rating went down from 2.8 to 2.0. Oh well...
EDIT: Ran the test once again, now I have a 3.1, and its seems to be a lot better and doesn't slow down the machine much - lol - go figure...

- Just downloaded Windows Vista RC2 5744, but when i tried to install it on my XPS M1210 I get this error message.
Windows cannot be installed on this computer with the current system BIOS version. Contact your computer manufacturer for a BIOS update, install the update, and then start Windows installation again. OEM Name: Dell Inc.; OEM Model: MXC062 ; BIOS Version: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A03; BIOS Date: 20060728000000.000000+000.
I have used all the Windows vista up to the RC1 built 5728 without any problem. Also, I have the latest BIOS version from DELL.
Downloaded Vista RC2 32 bit from Customer Preview Program second time burnt to DVD same error message at installation screen, mounting the image using Deamon Tool also gives me the same error message.
Anybody have this problem?
Thanks,

- RC2 hmm Vista hmmmmm Windows hmmmmmmmmm Microsoft urm donno there. Seems to me that Vista is just another Windows 98 with a ME launch lol.
If anything Vienna and what ever follows will be the Big Update i hope vista is just another pilot like all the other OS. Best windows so far is Windows 98 Second Edition
I'm a Mac Fanboy now
i converted from Microsoft Bloated Operating systems. -

- XP is the best OS from M$ by far.Quote -isn't a base osx install something around 2gig?
It's actually around 3-4 gigs but it's not bloated at all. Vista uses between 8 and 10 gigs or more, much of that though is drivers, same for OSX but to a much lesser extent. -

I wasn't actually thinking about comparison to vista tbh, I'm not happy about a base vista install size at all. But this guys comment was a gross anti-ms generalization , generally there stuff's been getting less bloaty and more efficient (compare office installers and installations over the last few generations for example) -

In this single statement you totally invalidated the rest of your post, and demonstrated that your opinion is worthless to those of us living in a little something called reality.

- @cyberfox2004:
Ricoh card reader chipset INF
Grab that. It will install on vista without complaint. Its for your SD memory card slots etc, and isn't really a driver.

- i love my XP install customised drivers, programs et al just 192 mb footprint!
vista is a very frustrating child, no matter how lovingly you adopt it, it behaves poorly compared to older brother XP and no amount of spanking brings any results.
my adoption of the kid called vista stands repudiated until further notice

- My download stopped at 2gb when using flashget. This is also happened with the previous build. Does anyone know why this is happening, or how to fix it?
-
#24.1 Posted by Tantawi on 07 Oct 2006 - 21:34
- Convert your HDD to NTFS since FAT32 has 2 GB file limit.
Also make sure you have the latest version of flashget since old version doesn't support large files. -

Correction. FAT32 has a 4GB file size limit, not 2GB.

- I ran 3DMark 2006 on Windows XP and then loaded Vista and these are my findings:
Vista (Default Drivers):
4470 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 1920
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 1476
CPU Score: 2554
Vista (NVidia 96.33 Drivers - These drivers worked better then default):
4439 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 1796
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 1578
CPU Score: 2528
WinXP (NVidia 91.47 Drivers):
4920 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 1993
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 1789
CPU Score: 2562
As you can see it's slower then XP. I have a Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 @ 3.02Ghz, 2 gigs ram and a NVidia 7900 GTX video card.

You have .ISO associated with winrar or some other program other then UltraIso or Nero.
Right click it and select properties and change "Opens with" under general tab to Nero or whatever you use to burn Iso files.

- I just have gotten aboard the Vista train last week with 5728 x64 as my first taste, downloaded and clean installed to 5744 x64. I have a couple of problems, related to hibernation mostly... but when I press the orange power button on the Vista start menu, I assume it's Vista version of Standby... my computer stops responding and now combination of mouse clicks or keyboard presses will awake the operating system back to use. I also noticed that I walked away from the computer to fold laundry, and when the monitor power time elapsed and monitor shut off, I could not get it to come back either. My system is a few years old, AMD64 3000+ w/ Abit KV8-Max3 motherboard, which the hardware works just fine with all of XP SP2 and XP x64's standby and hibernation features... not ready for RTM in my case.

#32 Posted by ptchaos on 09 Oct 2006 - 07:35
- Downloaded x64 version, installed over a new formated disk. When the install get to the end, it reboots, then when starting windows, the monitor goes standby and after a minute or two, it restarts again and repeat the process several times.
I think it must be something about video card drivers. I've tried to run in safe mode, but it shows a message that the installation must be finish to use safe mode.
Anyone with the same problem?
Got a P4 3.4GHz with GeForce 6600 GT PCIe 256MB
Will try x86 version later.
