Mozilla Corp. has released Firefox 2.0 Release Candidate 2 (RC2), but may be beat in the race to final by Microsoft, which said that Internet Explorer 7 would ship in October.

Firefox 2.0 RC2 went live late Friday, with the update pushed automatically to users of earlier editions of Firefox 2.0, the open-source browser's first major update since 1.5 in November 2005. Others can download RC2 in versions for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux in 39 localized editions, including ones for Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Mongolian, Russian, and Slovakian speakers.

However, at least one more release candidate will be issued by Mozilla. "There are a handful of security and stability bugs we'd like to see get in before the final FF2 release. Thus we'll be doing a third release candidate," wrote Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's director of engineering, in an entry on the developer's message forum.

But while Mozilla has not set a final release date for Firefox 2.0 -- on this calendar, it was once pegged to late October, but was withdrawn weeks ago -- rival Microsoft said that it will ship IE 7, the first significant upgrade to its browser since 2001, this month.

It's better that they get Firefox 2.0 right, than rush to release it before IE7 and end up having to make loads of updates afterwards.

m$ will release IE7 as update. Thats the only way they can "gain" the market of browsers (lmao?)

Meh it doesn't really matter seeing as Firefox 1.5 is better than IE 7 already in some regards.

That is exactly what I was thinking. IMHO IE 7.0 = FF 1.5.

Matter of opinions.

I don't know about that... IE7 does seem to have a lot of the same features and functions as FF 2.0.

I couldn't help but chuckle at this. "Fixes", anyone?

dont matter to me cause im pretty much done with using IE .... i still never seen seen a IE7 with my own eyes yet as i doubt ill ever be going back to IE cause im happy with Firefox and it just offers more options to it than IE does... plus firefox is probably more secure overall cause not many hackers will target firefox since it's userbase aint nearly as high as IE's is.

dont worry i dont "hate" either browser i aint one of the hardcore fanboys (as people call it in here) so i aint to biased against any browser... although i do prefer firefox over all other browsers i tried.

I totally understand. I prefer turnip greens over mustard greens; I've never let the mere fact that I've never eaten mustard greens affect my decision to not like them.

I've become less and less impressed with Firefox recently, I'm going to try IE7 and if I like it, I'll use it.

I have one question.
When did it become a race between MS and Mozilla to release their respective products first?
#7.1 cork1958 on 11 Oct 2006 - 02:09
I was wondering that too?
I'd like to try IE 7.
Don't care for Firefox at all on Windows, but on Linux, it's a totally different browser, as far as stable on any machine I've ever used it on. Prefer Opera on Windows, personally.

This is about as pointless as whether the 5th Service Pack to OS X will beat Vista to market. The one who gets to market first is going to win over few, if any, new users/customers. I doubt anyone is on the edge of their seat saying "Ok, I have to get a new browser. If Microsoft gets IE 7 out first I am going with Microsoft. If Mozilla gets FF out first it's FireFox all the way! Who will win me over????"

We all know IE 7 will have dozens of bugfixes released for it after Vista launches. I mean, why break the habits of a lifetime?

Anyways, it's good that there will be a Firefox 2.0 RC3. Much better that they deal with whatever issues are left oustanding now, before the final 2.0 release, than otherwise. Using Firefox 2.0 RC2 right now and it's very good, no complaints.

Of course, Firefox won't have dozens of bugfixes released for it after Vista launches ... oh no, wait, it will.

Suuuure Croquant. Sure, sure.

I can't believe no one here has came with the Netscape browse wars era.

I think that's the point of this article, remember those days and just think of the possibility of IE7 being dominant (well... staying dominant haha) once again.

Doesn't matter if IE7 beats Firefox in terms of release date. We'll just be happy that we have two capable browsers at our disposal. (ok, make that three with Opera. )

The Vista version of IE7 is quite a capable browser. Can't comment on XP's version.
