Microsoft Corp. today announced programs to provide holiday shoppers with low-cost upgrades to Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office release with the purchase of a new Windows Vista Capable personal computer. Microsoft is working with participating computer manufacturers and system builders that plan to sell PCs loaded with Windows XP or pre-installed with 2003 Microsoft Office software to make the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista and Microsoft Office Technology Guarantee programs available to consumers and small businesses from Oct. 26, 2006, through March 15, 2007.
“Our customers can shop for a new PC with confidence this holiday season because of the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista and Office Technology Guarantee programs,” said Mike Sievert, corporate vice president of Windows Client Marketing at Microsoft. “These programs ensure people will have a great experience with their Windows XP-based PCs today, and an even better one when Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office release become available.”
A number of computer manufacturers worldwide have confirmed plans to participate in the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista program. PCs carrying the Windows Vista Capable logo may be eligible for the program, but upgrade offers will vary among PC makers. The upgrade to Windows Vista may be offered for free or at a discounted price (shipping and handling charges may also apply), and customers should check with PC makers for their specific offers. Consumers can also visit http://www.windowsvista.com/expressupgrade for more information.

In my advertising class, this was called bait and switch...and it's illegal. I'm sure Microsoft has found a way to pretend this isn't what they are doing, but how many of you out there are interested in buying ONLY Vista Home? Anyone? Didn't think so.

Do you have a clue about Home Basic? I have been running Home Basic since 5384. I run the Standard UI. I have most of what Glass has. The Ui runs through DWM. I have the same color choices as Glass and no I don't miss Transparency. I can also run Home Premium, Business or Premium. I choose not to. I have no use for MC, Tablet or any of the extra's. You see people asking on here all of the time what processes can they turn off in Premium. I don't have those processes to turn off in the first place.
And to say I don't have a clue, when you make is perfectly clear that you don't use any of the new Vista stuff (only found in the more expensive versions), makes you kind of look like you don't know how to read.
Here, I'll make it crystal clear for you:
You just made my point for me.

That post alone tells me you dont' have a clue, so he wasn't very far off...
I can therefore only assume you're just a reactionary/MS apologist...who also seems to have no concept of puntuation or grammar (read other posts below)...a bad combination if you want your posts to be taken more seriously than mine.
These machines don't come with a DX10 graphics card ( cause they don't exist yet! ), so make sure you let people know they'll have to upgrade that as well in order to get everything (well the only thing worth upgrading for) out of Vista. AND they'll have to trust the XP->Vista upgrade path, including all the issues with crapware bundles from Symantec and McAfee as well as the OEM ones (like all the junk Sony puts on their machines).
My advice to everyone is to wait to buy until after you've seen a real, working Vista machine with DX10 graphics, updated OEM crapware, bug fixes over the next 60-90 days, etc.
It'll only be a month or two, so why not wait and avoid the potential hassles?

Personally I'd wait to SP1, but that is just me after putting up with Visual Studio 2005's extreme buggieness...
People should buy a computer this holiday season so that they are ensured a working computer with Windows XP SP2 installed and not the buggy beasts Microsoft will release next year. Don't wait and fall victim to the "I'm an unsuspecting Microsoft beta tester" ploy! Wait until at least SP1 is released before jumping on the "Vista" bandwagon. That won't be until AT LEAST the end of the summer next year if not Christmas '07.
This is low cost upgrade??
wtf is microsoft thinking with upgrade bs?? maybe they will get a clue. i doubt it thou.
this will hurt pc sales. i hope the industry wakes up and stomps microsoft back for this
This is a special deal for those that buy new computers NOW before vista ships with Windows XP. they will get to ugprade to vista for a heavily rebated price form the standard upgrade price.
Read carefully, comprehend, think of your response, post it carefully (including spelling and typos), and you'll come off as an intelligent contributor to this debate...instead of a reactionary apologist jumping down people's throats for your mistaken interpretations of their opinions...

Well the thign is he is commenting on THIS article, yet his comment has no relation to THIS article.
and like all the usual MS flamers he also constantly chooses to no only use only the Ultimate package, but also only the non OEM version. Nice attempt to sidetrack form the actual point though. Guess you couldn't contribute anythign useful about the actual topic at hand.
So I throw that last part there right back at you.
and upgrading is free if you buy XP pro or MCE btw, wich isn't mentioned here. Well except for shipping and handling.
A more stable Os, a Safer OS, and an overall nicer and faster OS... how is it not safe to step in those waters... When you like in a shark cage in a pool filled with everythign from giant whites to tigershark, it doesn't get less safe o use a better shark cage in another lake with less sharks.
I'll take a proven shark cage over an experimental, still obviously unfinished beta one for the next couple of months.
Vista is not proven stable or safer yet and is not faster than XP, by anyone's measure. "Nicer" is not something you can measure, so it's just your opinion tag.
Your opinion might be taken more credibly (here and by the people you will be advising) if you took the time to edit the grammar, spelling, and typos of your posts.
buy something built from the ground up for Vista, when it's done and solid, in a couple of months.
I am also looking at a new laptop, and will probably get one now, and sell it again next year (to buy a proper vista based notebook), I just don't think this notebook that I am waiting for will be out until at least mid/late summer next year.
