Doesn't work anymore.

Congrats on the longest news story in Neowin history!

Also, the link works fine for me in Firefox.

Edit: Aww, you're making it bigger!
#3 Mx² on 30 Oct 2006 - 19:58
The link does work. Just keep refreshing and force refreshing it
#4 IanD on 30 Oct 2006 - 19:59
I only got it to work in IE. Firedox was a no go.. But I got it, hopefully it will be a tad bit more stable than the RC releases.

Links worked fine for me a few minutes ago and the x86 one works but now shows a genuine advantage validation - it didn't before The x64 page still works for me with no genuine advantage required to download.

Edit: My comment is irrelevant now as the links have changed to point direct to the installers rather than the download pages.

I'm sticking with WMP10 simply because WMP11 doesn't offer me anything new.

the library is WAY improved. you don't use the library at all?
#8.2 Litespeed on 30 Oct 2006 - 21:22
I switched to WMP11 just for the library. It is soooooo much better now. Being able to search instantly is a huge improvement. I personally find WMP11 vastly superior to WMP10.

If that's the only thing new or the only improvement, I don't want it either. First thing I do is disable the library. What the heck would I want it to remember what I've played before or what I have in my collection? I'm not brain dead. I know what I have and what I've played.

What.. do you only have like 50 songs?

Try using Explorer to select 1766 Electronic genre songs in a library of 7000+ mp3s and then play them in chronological order.

Perhaps features like this don't interest you, but then again perhaps you are not WMP's target audience...

I, for one, sort my mp3s rather than have one folder of 10,000. Sort them by genre when you acquire them and you lose the need for silly things like this library "upgrade". I'm sure others do the same.

I sort each song by artist then album. However, the library gives you the ability to quickly sort a playlist or select songs from specific criteria. Some times I'll order songs by the number of times I've played them so that I'll play some of the songs i haven't heard in a while. You can't do that with Explorer.

The only people who have complained about being locked out of so-called 'legitimate copies' are close pirates; like Paul and his tirade about him being locked out, then he suddenly admits he was running a bootleg copy.

I've yet to have a single problem with WGA - if you're having a problem, its an issue with your licence, nothing to do with Microsoft.
#13.6 kronik on 31 Oct 2006 - 13:44
just open the damn thing in Winrar and double click wmp11.exe to bypass the WGA

No, pirates have tools to circumvent WGA. The only people who are truly discomforted by WGA are legitimate users. Unfortunately, MS is sliding down a slippery slope where they are becoming an anti-consumer company.

Pretty horrible plan there. That'll leave you with an updated UI and not much else. If you don't run setup_wm.exe to install, your devices and sharing settings will be extremely messed up. If you don't want to run the installer, don't run the installer. Telling other people how to really badly break their install is pretty non-intelligent.

This is some bull...they finally release one that will install on x64. Hmm...I'd have figured that because they didn't release an x64 beta, that they'd be working on making a fully 64-bit capable version...but, no! It's still x86, and it doesn't have the WMP toolbar.

However, I guess, I am glad that I am able to be able to have it...I was just expecting more.

Hmm,

One thing I don't get.
The digital signature timestamp on this is 19th Oct.

Originally they were gonna release on the 24th, but then the put it back to today becuase of a last minute bug.
Surely the timestamp should therefore be a date >24th Oct?

Or am I missing something?
#15.1 Tantawi on 30 Oct 2006 - 20:33
No, they may wanted to put it on the server on 13 Oct. to release on 24 Oct., so they fixed the bug and put it on 19 Oct. for 30 Oct. release, that make sense ha?

Wow Windows Media Player 11 it's like Windows Media Player 10 but ... with ... uhhh... hmm... errr...
I'm sure there's something new in it. Looks like a new skin, that took how many years?
Most impressive.
Oh look and a link to a music store, I wonder how many programmers that took to add, thousands of man hours, etc.
They could at least add some new visualization plugins?
Seriously you know, all ripping on the product itself aside, because I mean, I'll admit, it does play media, and it's a nice alternative to Real Player, iTunes, etc, but this is like the IE7 release -- this company has BILLIONS of dollars -- is supposed to have the most talented, cutting-edge, brilliant programmers of any software company on earth -- and all they can do in 10 years is pump out miniscule minor updates and call them major releases.

If a streamlined easy to navigate and customisable library do not interest you, would you instead prefer a load of bloat?

If so, then I highly recommend RealPlayer.

#18.1 +zachdms on 31 Oct 2006 - 22:38
The first 64-bit native version of WMP is in Vista 64-bit. I believe for the 64bit encoder they have 64bit native codecs for XP 64, though.

#21.1 RealFduch on 31 Oct 2006 - 00:40
Download NEW FRRRREEEEEE OpenFreeCrash Player. It has no DRM so it cannot play ANY protected contents.
Trash your iTunes and Urge money!
#21.2 PCyr on 31 Oct 2006 - 17:22
Your comment makes no sense. WMP11 doesn't come with DRM, it comes with DRM support. I hate DRM, but the only thing that will change by using a non-DRM supporting player is which songs you can play. DRM is put there by the media companies, not by MS.

#23.4 alsheron on 31 Oct 2006 - 09:31
They don't "lock" out media center users.... For Gods sake woman, get a grip.... The installer OBVIOUSLY requires specific components of media center to be present which aren't included in older versions. The solution is bleeding obvious.... Whip over to microsoft update and update Windows! It's free and if (!locked! you're running a legit copy it should be no problem at all..... I did this myself.....

this is complete BS on MS's part. they still won't allow you to backup licenses or "media usage rights" in WMP 11 and alot of these hick small time stores that use windows media protection have too restrictive usage rights for me not to be able to backup my license.

I think the better question is why people like me haven't experienced those issues; how about less ****ing around with the Windows, and more using the application itself.
#39 GShapiro on 30 Oct 2006 - 23:26
FYI...

If you are among those that disabled Universal Plug and Play Service along with SSDP Discovery Service you will start getting Event Log errors whenever you fire up WM11. At least on my system I got them.

Setting them BOTH to manual and starting SSDP will prevent these messages. I suppose you lose some function in WMP11 without these services. And I suppose getting the Event messages is probably no big deal if you want to keep them disabled.

FWIW.

WMP11 froze on me upon first execution, but after killing/restarting its fine now. Some gripes:

1. The text alignment is kinda screwy in some columns. Some text is lined to the left and others are lined to the right of the column.

2. Although I don't buy online music anymore, I find it too be a big WTF?? that you're not able to backup License and usage rights anymore. What do they expect you to do if you reformat/reload the OS? Surely there is a method to backup licenses!?

3. Wish they would've customized its look a tad for XP users and allowed the base color to be changed. Given that they obviously want people to upgrade asap, I figured as much from MS.

4. I miss the total songs/total time indication at the bottom of the player GUI. Why would they remove that?

Turn off "Add media files to your library when played" under more options... player if you view videos that you DON'T want thumbnailed in your video library.

This may save a few people some embarrassing moments.

Indeed, and don't forget to disable history too. Better yet, use a different player for pr0n.
#48.2 hapbt on 31 Oct 2006 - 00:47
I really wanna know what made you first think of this.

Where the hell IS Media Connect now?
#49.1 +zachdms on 31 Oct 2006 - 22:47
Built in now, really. Tools: Options: Library: Sharing .
#50 Sphinx Myth on 31 Oct 2006 - 00:44
I can't believe that they made a GUI even worse than the previous one...Seriously, what a mess!

WGA NOT needed.
#51 Flawlesstyle on 31 Oct 2006 - 00:53
Thanks, totally forgot.
#52 guylaroche on 31 Oct 2006 - 01:00
Nice
#53 warr on 31 Oct 2006 - 01:18
"Genuine installer" checks WGA.
#54 eilegz on 31 Oct 2006 - 01:32
that really sux with the wga thing, anyways i hope that wmp library dont create a lot of useless jpg pics of album inside each album folder, thats so annoyying behaviour
#55 choisir on 31 Oct 2006 - 02:11
have they fixed the album art yet? the beta of wmp11 ruined pretty much my ENTIRE collection in that respect
(1 reply) #56 AnalogKid82 on 31 Oct 2006 - 02:46
Anyone else disappointed that it doesn't adopt your XP theme? I use the silver theme, but WMP is still black.
#56.1 MrCobra on 31 Oct 2006 - 03:40
That's the only thing I disliske about it.
(1 reply) #57 AfroTrance on 31 Oct 2006 - 02:49
People use WMP for mp3s? I had to use it (wmp10) on uni computers for mp3s and I found horrible compared to winamp. Maybe I just couldn't find the features I wanted but if they aren't in the right click menu or on a button on the GUI then they are too hidden anyway.
#57.1 ThaCrip on 31 Oct 2006 - 07:16
winamp lite wipes the floor with WMP if u ask me... cause it loads up lightning quick compared to WMP... plus Winamp sounds better than WMP to
#58 Ravensworth on 31 Oct 2006 - 02:50
I want a media player, not a media center. Ever since version 7 that is what they've been pushing though. I got rid of the new version with nlite, I'll stick with Media Player Classic. Just my opinion of course.
#59 tehmemories on 31 Oct 2006 - 03:21
They should really come out it a Validated version of the Black Vista theme for XP to match this freakin' program.
#60 vetL3thal on 31 Oct 2006 - 04:46
Why does WMP11 start up Activesync when I open it? It is getting on my nerves.
(1 reply) #61 weenur on 31 Oct 2006 - 05:34
Still doesn't detect all my mp3s. It's leaving like 1500 of them out of the library. Lame. Sticking with iTunes.
#61.1 ghos on 01 Nov 2006 - 02:31
Maybe you didn't bother to look into the options and tell it where your music is stored. It has a list of folders. Although I agree it shouldn't need specific folders to look in, it should find them all regardless. But some ppl don't want it look in some folders as its sound files they don't want in the player.
#62 Dirtie on 31 Oct 2006 - 07:03
Question: What's the cpu and memory usage like for this one, because when I install 10 some of my videos go choppy (slightly outdated PC) which is why I've been sticking with WMP 9.
(1 reply) #63 kuek1991 on 31 Oct 2006 - 08:01
the mini player is not working for me? =(
#63.1 +zachdms on 31 Oct 2006 - 08:30
Restart. Anytime you upgrade WMP and the old wmploc.dll is loaded by explorer, you'll need to restart to get that working. WMP doesn't count that as reboot-worthy, since everything else is functional.
(1 reply) #64 Peffram on 31 Oct 2006 - 08:27
Helllo!!

Can somebody tell me why after the installation of WMP11, the player starts at the "Library" section instead of "Now Playing"?? There used to be an option to select that in WMP10 but now I can't find it.

Thx in advanced

Cheers

#64.1 +zachdms on 31 Oct 2006 - 08:29
New feature. If you want to do it the old way, use "wmplayer.exe /Task:NowPlaying" in your shortcuts to WMP.
#65 kev_gordon on 31 Oct 2006 - 09:37
Can some one help me please?! I have over 2300 music tracks in my music folder, but WMP11 only see 547 of them! When I tell it to add to the library, it only ever picks up the same 547 tracks.

I think this occured a while ago when I tried out a WMP11 Beta version. Even after I uninstalled it, and rolling back to WMP10, version 10 would then still only see the same 547 tracks that WMP11 picked up. I've never been able to use WMP since.

I was hoping that installing the full version of WMP11 would fix things but it hasnt, and it's very frustrating!

I've been using Winamp since then, which picks up all 2000+ tracks without problems, but I really would like to go back to WMP11.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 64 bit the x86 processor? 64bit, 32bit please
#67 Alex_is_Axel on 31 Oct 2006 - 10:26
64bit is the x64
32bit is the x86

It's an outrage..... again a simple app that is so deeply buried into the OS that it requires booting after installation. Moreover, if you have a sizable library it takes ages to load fully....then it steals 640mb of Virtual RAM...... outrages....pretty pictures do not gloss this over!
#68.1 dotf on 31 Oct 2006 - 16:00
Can someone tell me which registry key needs to be changed on the x64 install for it to start as x64 instead of x86?

Also has someone tried this on Vista64? Will it launch 32bit if the key is modified there?

I was thinking it may be possible to use the 32bit player on Vista64 for codec compatability reasons.

thx
#68.2 chenks on 31 Oct 2006 - 16:04
didn't need a reboot on the 2 systems that i installed it on.
#68.3 +zachdms on 31 Oct 2006 - 22:47
If it required a reboot, you were pretty specifically doing something with WMP's files at that point that had locked them in use. There's no possible way to avoid a reboot when you do that. The most common reason for file lockage with WMP11 is being on a Media Center system, where that is using core WM files almost all of the time.

So, I definitely respect your POV here, but WMP setup can't really safely avoid any more reboots than it already does. %windir%wmsetup.log generally logs reboot reasons, though, so you can check that and perhaps find out more.
#69 warr on 31 Oct 2006 - 11:49
The reason why I use Winamp.
#70 newdeepdan on 31 Oct 2006 - 13:43
I installed it and thought it was going to be the next best thing. I was thinking I would probably switch over from iTunes to WMP, but it looks like I'm sticking to iTunes. There really isn't new aside from the new interface with WMP 11.
#71 ViperSnake on 31 Oct 2006 - 17:14
What a coincidence, Halloween is the darkest day of the year, and WMP11 has a dark color scheme, goes pretty good!
#72 jasondefaoite on 31 Oct 2006 - 18:35
Still no AAC support? Way to go microsoft. Won't be downloading it so.

Anyone found a way to bypass the WGA validation during the installation yet?
#73.1 +zachdms on 31 Oct 2006 - 22:44
There's been bad advice provided by how to do so, and that's about it. The ways suggested leave you with broken device and sharing settings.
#73.2 kartik on 08 Dec 2006 - 21:33
well dont worry i ve found a hack i have a file which is bout 14mb and i am sure it can bypass the WGA sure...well if u need it do write to me kartik87@gmail.com...please allow me some time i ll reply soon.....Enjoy..

How about Server 2003 support?
#75 jimbo11883 on 01 Nov 2006 - 06:03
I tried it out, and just don't like it. Foobar2000 is still way better. The only thing I like about WMP11 is the way it looks. The way it sounds and handles my folder full of music is retarded.
#76 xplatinum on 01 Nov 2006 - 15:44
extract installer supplied by microsoft using winrar to a temp directory.
download legitlib.dll from here.
extract legitlib to temp directory of wmp11
delete legitlibm.dll
rename legitlib.dll > legitlibm.dll
run setup_wm.exe

voila.
#77 Elementfire0666 on 06 Nov 2006 - 00:58
Um it won't download album art when i update information... the beta always did but it won't now. Some excuse for a final product. The player even looks jacked up on the close button. If you have it open just on the desktop nothing else behind it you can see a white spec on the edge of the player. What the hell is that?
