More Windows Vista Packaging and Disc

Take a look at how the Windows Vista packaging will open up to reveal the media inside. Also, it is our first peak at what the Windows Vista discs will actually look like.

I like what they’ve done with the disc. The design on the disc is unique and fresh. Microsoft has adopted pretty much the same looking holographic CD/DVD’s since Windows 2000 and its nice to see it be given a fresh new look - which seems to be a reoccurring theme with the Windows Vista packaging in general.

I do like the hard case. It might not fit in a CD rack but it's cooler than a jewel case in a cardboard box :p

Well I'd just as well take it in a jewel case to have it fit in a CD rack... I couldn't care less about how the box looks. That's not what I'm either going to use or look at. It's even the opposite -- it could likely be what I'm going to misplace.

Thing is, in case you have forgotten, Windows XP never came in a CD case too (at least not my Home Edition copy...). It came with a cardboard box, with a glossy-looking folder with a CD clipped on the middle page. It NEVER fitted in my CD rack ever...

I can't believe how excited people are getting by the packaging!!!! This is the sort of stuff you either end up sitting on and cracking, dropping down the back of the bookcase or suddenly find your cat chewing on it during the small hours...

I know I'm old and jaded but it's just a box! (I didn't fight in three world wars for this and what's more I remember when all this were fields etc. etc.)

Don't be such a grouch. I too agree that this is not necessarily any picture of it's fundamental functions. It is however a very valuable tool for Home users. Marketing is a big part of any MS release...you should all realise that now.

Since you'resuch an old timer you should remember how it was back in the days when OS' came with proper manuals and stuff.

An OS is probably the most expensive software purchase a computer owner will make. havign a nice looking box on the bookshelf, not stacked among cheap games, is nice, let's you keep a hold of where you have all those manuals and stuff. and a bit of pride in knowing and shwoign you have the full legal version, bought and paid for.

Absolutely; great for propping your door open, killing insects and raising a monitor to eye-level with. That's a proper OS for you and no mistaking.

Eee, 'e were a great coder were my Dad.. (That's a Hovis advert 'joke' for those too young/out of Britain to understand)

(shrugs) Each to their own, I suppose. All my software boxes invariably end up in another big box in the attic. With Vista coming on I imagine it will be the most expensive software purchase for most owners, yes (mine was probably thanks to Adobe I would say, and yes, that's in the attic too! On an aesthetic point of view I think this new packaging looks a bit clunky, something like a prop from Space 1999..

I'm actually 'only' 34 (nearly 35) but I'm genuinely left cold by this packaging and a bit bemused by the warm reception it's had. But then, what do I know..?
#10.4 SniperX on 02 Nov 2006 - 16:52
lol pollaxe. I'm happy to warm my slippers and smoke my pipe by the fireside set aside for us old-timers.

As packaging goes, I suppose it's decorative, but as you intimate, will it still be decorative with the dust gathered on it?

You had your own Dad when you were young? We had to borrow one from around the village.

It does looks nice but on the cover it says "Themost"? Maybe it's the curve but if it's a typo, the designer should be shot.
#18.1 cardg on 02 Nov 2006 - 20:02
Posted about it just some messages above...
Good to know someone else noted it
#18.2 krasch on 02 Nov 2006 - 20:49
Actually it doesn't. It says "The most".

Using IE7 and setting the zoom level to 400% makes this clearly apparent. It's just the shine due to the curved edge of the package that gives the false impression at 100% view.

Is that still the Beta1 version of the case, or is it a RC2 or RTM ??? When are thry going to look at releasing a SP1 for the case ???

#34 ElectricDemon on 02 Nov 2006 - 15:22
Too bad OEM will probably turn up in a paper sleeve with a plastic window, fastened to a piece of card. Not too bothered since it's the software that counts, not the packaging (although it does look sexy)
#35 RangerLG on 02 Nov 2006 - 15:24
Eh....Its still just a case. After you install the OS, its gonna be put away until a reinstall may be needed. I understand marketing and hype, but for me it all boils down to how it works. I put all of my important discs in a protected box already. I personally am going to buy this OEM when its available just like I buy my hardware.
#36 jedimasterk on 02 Nov 2006 - 15:31

Not to nit-pick, but you do realise that if you had a 3D printer, the torrent could provide a cad based diagram which would allow you to print out the case for your DVDR, and thus, proving the original poster correct

#58.2 rm20010 on 02 Nov 2006 - 23:55
If you take a closer look at the box, the Ultimate Edition box reads at the top: "32- and 64-bit."

So there we have it: a 32 bit disc to use on 32-bit machines, and a 64 bit disc to use when someone upgrades to a 64-bit processor (or when the support for 64-bit machines is there).

This brings me to one question: if they include a 32- and 64- bit disc, can someone install Vista on a 32-bit PC and a 64-bit PC at the same time?

Ugly box. Disc looks nice, though.

And, somebody above asked why it doesn't say if it's 32 or 64 bit.. atren't all versions of vista except starter edition, which isn't even available in first world countries, supposed to have both?
(1 reply) #71 lazieye on 03 Nov 2006 - 12:06
The discs will have all versions of Vista from Starter to Ultimate in both 32 & 64 bit.
It will be your product key that determines which version loads....unless something changed since I last read up.
Also upgrading to a "higher" version will be from the same disc, it will be key from MS that activates it.

....can hear hackers rubbing their hands with glee.

All of you who are 'maxin out' on the box and the 'cool' CD seem to be missing the point...

You can have a real ugly woman/man jump out of the prettiest birthday cake!

Bottom line... How many auto updates/patches/security fixes are we gonna have to go through before it actually 'works' properly and a**holes arent hacking it to buggery?

Is it gonna do 'what it says on the tin'? -- Hmm...

How many years has it taken these guys to get their poo together and sort this out?

Who cares about the box and the 'fancy' graphics -- are you gonna look at the box after you install this OS? Unless thats you're buzz of course!

You're looking at minimum 800Mb of system memory to have any chance of running it in a reasonable manner. (Thats at Idle!
It wont install on FAT32 partitions.
7GB HD space for installation.

Make your own minds up... Forget the box and 'cool' disk... think about it a bit more!

PEACE!
