Google has launched a new Java based Gmail client today:

"The new Gmail for mobile client launching today began life as a challenge: What if we could develop a Gmail application for cell phones that was as powerful and as easy to use as the desktop version? What if it ran on hundreds of different mobile devices -- and made it possible to compose, read, and respond to conversations with a bare minimum of clicking and scrolling?

What if it enabled you to do things like search your inbox, view your attachments (including pictures and PDF files), and click to call your Gmail contacts? And what if the app were designed to make the whole experience as fast and as seamless as possible?"

You can download the new application to any of these devices, by pointing your mobile browser to gmail.com/app Google doesn't charge you to access your Gmail account from a mobile phone, but depending on your service plan, you may be charged by your wireless provider.

I just DLed it on my LG CU500 -- it works perfectly and is MUCH better than using their former mobile web interface! I love it. Keep up the good work Google!!! Bring us more free - and very useful - mobile apps please!

Does not work on an A780 either. I can run it and it says loading at the top but nothing comes down.

Opera mini with google mobile (http://google.com/xhtml) is lighter, faster, and give more features and options (and when you click on a link in email, it load in opera mini).

So, i stay with opera mini.

But i'm still waiting for something wich give me an alert when i receive mails (no, not mail>sms).

For 404 : change your phone language to english, then download it (after that, go back to your favorite language).

Works on my LG LX550/Fusic... but I tried to go to gmail.com/app with Opera Mini, and it said that it was unsupported on my device. I opened that site in my regular web app, and it downloaded Gmail Mobile and ran fine. So there you have it. Download from your phone's built-in browser.

I must say though, up until now, Opera Mini is superb for viewing Gmail's mobile site.

works well - however the first sign on attempt didnt allow me to add any numbers to my username for some reason. When it bombs out it allows me. Strange

Downloaded okay, but after sign-in I get an error saying it can't get a network connection, and to check my signal strength. Nonsense, I have no other connectivity problems.

That's that one in the bin then. The Gmail WAP site is fine if you want to use it on your mobe; nice and compact.
I'd just caution the Opera Mini advocates to bear in mind that SSL connections are unencrypted between your device and the Opera proxy-server, so don't rely on SSL security if you use this browser.

If your not in the US/Canada you may have this problem but its an easy fix, login to Gmail via the web and change the default language to English (US) i did this and i am on "Vodafone UK Pay-as-you-Go" and now I can use the app.

It works fine in my Nokia N73.
By default the first 20-25 emails in the Inbox are retreived with full body.
If you want to save data, in the settings you can chose to retreive only the headers in the future.

Nice piece of software. I hope it gets enhaced with more features as the software gets developed.

Works on my Sony K610 and Blackberry Pearl
#17 Zelpus on 03 Nov 2006 - 14:36
Works on my m600i but it sucks I'd rather use opera with gmail.com
#18 Erichiwaann on 03 Nov 2006 - 17:25
Works on my Blackberry 8700 as well
#19 Tammm on 03 Nov 2006 - 19:10
Works fine on my N73 too. I think this is a pretty cool program, marred only by the fact that it cannot be minimised. If this was able to be minimised, and constantly checked for email updates, it would be invaluable.

Dude, JAVA????

I mean, I know it's universal and stuff, but really, who needs that kind of bloat just for checking their email?

No thank you, I'll stick to my WM5 + .NET Compact Framework.. Much faster. And Opera Mobile. Rock on!
#21 Hello1024 on 03 Nov 2006 - 21:25
Whats the data usage on this? I check my email every few hours normally, but get annoyed with the ~14 pence it costs each time using the built in Browser and GMail WAP.

I'd try it myself except java apps don't seem to have network access anymore (even after giving them permission) after an unrequested SIM update from Orange, and their tech support say it's not their problem. If anyone else has this problem I'd very much like a soloution so I can use Opera Mini again. When I try to use opera mini now, the GPRS connects, and I get charged 4p (10KB equivilent), but then it reports a connectivity problem, even though the built in browser works fine.

Works fine here! N70 on 3
