The reports have shown that Apple's iPhone will be mass produced at Hon Hai Precision. Hon Hai Precision is otherwise known as Foxconn. The report was issued today when sources close to Foxconn told reporters in Taiwan. If the sources are correct, Foxconn secured the order from Apple to produce roughly 12 million iPhone units.
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone sometime in the first half of 2007. The product has been long in waiting and is expected to combine the functionality of Apple's popular iPod with the communications capabilities of a mobile phone. Some analysts are expecting that while the first generation iPhone units will lack smart phone features, Apple will follow-up with an "iPhone Pro" for business folks.
Expectations are high for Apple's iPhone. Analysts predict that Apple will gain roughly 1 percent market share of the mobile phone space in under a year's time, equating to roughly $2 billion. No further details of Apple's contract with Foxconn for the iPhone was released.

I wouldn't be surprised...
No they don't. They make an OS that is used on many embedded phones, but they don't make any.
No, it will be the Apple iPee, a fully digital toliet with downloadable flush tones and a large LCD screen that shows you how full your bladder was. Oh, and it also holds 80 GB or music.

With the wireless version called "iPee Freely"
HUGE.
I'm not sure if we'll see the kind of firestorm success the ipod enjoyed, but I think we'll see some differentiation and personality FINALLY hit the mobile phone market. I can't wait.
Difference is MS only did software. They are a software company. What Apple is doing is launching a new phone with its own unique OS. Huge difference.

Um, the "software" that Microsoft "did" WAS the OS. More than one OS, actualy. Several of them. Used to be called Windows CE, now called Windows Mobile. Remember? Yeah, that.
So, Apple offers one set of hardware with one OS, while MS offers one OS that's available on many different manufactures' hardware. But NATURALY you think the Apple **** is better. 'casue it's from Apple.
Congratulations, U R A FANBOY!

NATURALLY . . . we'll see whether "one set of hardware with one OS" will be popular with respect to cell phones. If the success of the ipod is anything to go on, Apple will put cell phone maufacturers to school.

TD... so whats FOXCONN part in this?! Apple was never a hardware company.... more like a big retailer and minor software creator
Apple must love themselves, I mean two billion dollars? Holy crap!
Sure they might be the music player best sellers but that was because they were one of the first MP3 player companies out, and have had 5 generations to improve on. Mobile phone companies like Sony Ericsson and Nokia have had several dozen generation of mobiles over the past 10+ years and have so many different models to choose from. Apple is going to have to make several different models to compete, because there is no such thing as a 'one size fits all' unless it is REALLY expensive.
And I doubt that it will happen. With the iPod apple took over a market that practically didn't exist, it was a niche abotu to explode into a full blown global market, and it's a market where variety isn't necessary.
with Cell phones the rules are completely different, first you have a market that while still growing is at the limit and most sales are rplacement sales. and most peopel will stay with what they know. Second, there allready are quality MP3 player phones, like SE phones. And Apple doesn't have any real experience in makign phones. There also the fact that in the cell phone market diversity is king. Peopel have different needs and åprices for what they can afford. Apple isn't very good at making a variety of products.
Most likely we'll see a single model iPhone. The people that will buy it will be A: The members of the Church of Jobs, who just buy anythgin apple anyway and B: a small number of the peopel who actually fit the market segment and feature/cost segment this phone will be in.
As for how long Apple will survive in the cell phone business. Well with iPod, peopel keep and use theirs for years and years, and Apple product developement is slooow, as evident by this phone. Unless Apple is allready working on iPhone 2 and 3, they'll loose their customers within a year as they upgrade to newer and better phones.
And you have the problem with why Apple's previus attempt at working with Motorola or whoever failed. In the cell phone market, the key is to market your phone long before it hits the shelves. these thigns are in developement for years, you want people to know what's coming and that in 6 months time, you'll WANT THIS phone, not the other one, and you'll wait to buy a new one till THIS one is out. meanwhile apple insist on sticking to their philosophy of not telling anyone what their product actually it untill preferably everyone has allready bought it.
so yeah, Apple taking over the cell phone market, never gonna happen. apple getting 1% of the market... yeah.. maybe... but not for a long time and not consistantly unless they create a fully independant and separae cell phone division focused entirely on developing iPhones
Companies like Nokia, Motorolla, Samsung and Sony-Ericsson will suffer severely if Apple hits this market the right way... even if their product isn't superior (as the iPod is inferior to many other DMPs).
But yes HawkMan, I agree with you. The iPod thing was lucky - they hit a market that had just recently been created by some less marketing-savvy companies (Creative/Rio) and took it by storm. Maybe they will make this phone thing work, maybe they wont... either way it'll be an uphill battle for Apple.
...and of course there is the deals done between Microsoft and Nokia (Live.com), Microsoft and Samsung (Windows Mobile) & Microsoft and Motorolla (also using Windows Mobile). Any of these partnerships could easily result in a Microsoft assault on this market.

There is nothing illegal about having a monopoly. However, using that monopoly to create an unfair advantage over your competition is what MS was guilty of. There have been no reports that Apple has done anything of the sort.
It's my opinion that Apple does make the best music player on the market now.
