We have seen some fantastic submissions from around the world in this years GUI Championships. Over $12,000 in cash, software, site subscriptions, and prizes were up for grabs in this competition. We have already given away two video cards from EVGA and NVIDIA, Xbox 360's, and many bundles of software.

Now it's time to announce the Best Overall Skinner of this years competition. The prize for the Best Overall Winner will be an Alienware Area-51 m5750 Multimedia Entertainment Laptop.

Congratulations and a big round of applause goes out to JJ Ying!

JJ Ying submitted some outstanding wallpapers and Windowblinds skins including Azenis and Edisso, which had a great following throughout the competition.

That Championship was a marketing campain, so its normal that they try to maximize the reach and effect of it.
I also think enought buzz has been posted about this, id!

JJ Ying only makes average skins most of the time. Only a few are decent. He just makes so many of them.

Not to knock the time and effort that went into all this, because it's evident much of both were expended throughout this contest, but am I the only one failing to see anything truly original or impressive about any of the submissions? That's probably what is most disturbing about the whole contest - it's all just more of the same.

One thing we can definitely come to a conclusion about though is that the themers who push things in new directions and create original work are either just not interested anymore or don't find anything appealing about such contests.

I think the problem was not enough promotion before the event started (should have been at least a 2-3 month annoucement beforehand), especially with the prizes not even being set into more than midway into the competition.

The problem is, that most of the prices wherent known back then...
They made deals as the contest already started...

Sorry but I think his wallpapers are pretty good, nice graphical ability. At the same time, they lack complexity and aren't all that hard to make in photoshop if you know what you're doing and just spend a little time. Still, they look nice, so I'll give him that one. The skins however are a different matter. Those skins look horrible if you ask me. Certainly no where near the best on the site, and I only glanced at a few. Oh well, good job to him anyway.

I agree with you fully. Many icons/skins are bloated and bulky. There are a couple decent ones, but that's about it. I can find better quality at wincustomize or deviantart.

I wasn't aware that Neowin's homepage was like Clockwork oranage where people are forced to read the text that comes up.

Neowin.net was one of the sponsors of the contest and one of the 5 judges for the skins. So it makes sense that news on it would appear here.

Different people have different interests. Some people like reading about the latest lawsuit Microsoft is in, others like hearing what the RIAA is up, others like seeing what sort of customization stuff is going on, and so forth.

In two years, when the next one happens, you can go into a hibernative state or something.
