The next generation of mid-range graphics cards are just around the corner, so should you even consider purchasing a GeForce 7600GT or Radeon X1650XT graphics card? Currently the average 7600GT costs just $130, while the X1650XT is closer to $150. At these prices both present very affordable upgrade solutions, and while we can not predict the future something tells us that we won't see DirectX10 cards this affordable until at least the end of next year.

Given the fact that both products can run the majority of new games at 1600x1200 with maximum in-game quality settings enabled, there is no real reason why you should ignore them in the hope that the next generation mainstream contenders will be much more powerful.

nVidia announced Mid-Range-Dx10-Cards for spring, wasn't it? So why wouldn't those be about as affordable? End of next year sounds a bit sci-fi to me.

I'm a bit confused about this dx10 thing. Should the card be spesifically built for dx10 just to use it?? I remember a time we just installed the latest directx software and we played the games written for it. I planning to buy a 7600gt very soon since I can't afford the 8xxx series (yet they're not available here) so won't I be able to use dx10 at all??

No you wont be able to install the software and as far as I know you never could. Installing the software worked because games were/are compatible with older generations of DX. Thats not to say the older generation card will support all the features of newer cards. For instance my Geforce4MX card could play HL2 fine but at the same time it couldnt support all the features to enable it to handle the water reflections/refractions ect and instead you just get muddy looking water.

I doubt you will NEED DX10 any time soon, most titles should be backwards compatible I would say as financially it makes no sense to only support the early adopters. That said with the cards hitting the market it shouldnt be long until the affordable ones arrive so they may be worth the wait.
