Social networking website MySpace says it will release tools to identify and ban US sex offenders from its service.
The company said the new service will be the first national database that brings together about 46 US state sex offender registers. MySpace is a personal website tool for people who use it to post blogs, music, and videos.

More than 80 million people have registered a MySpace page. News Corp bought the site for $580m last year. The new technology, called Sentinel Safe, will let MySpace search US state and federal databases to seek out and delete MySpace profiles of registered sex offenders. It will be available in the next 30 days.

I dont see how this will be too effective whats to stop sex offenders registering under a false name etc etc?
#1.1 Jugalator on 07 Dec 2006 - 15:02
Agreed... Then MySpace adds some basic checks on registration details to make sense, but then people use sites like fakenamegenerator.com, ... It sounds more to me like a publicity thing to tell the world "hey, we're good guys!" (I can see why they feel the need to do so occasionally as bad rep can be a problem for them). Nothing wrong with that, and it's good they're doing this, but I think the effects won't be too great, that's all.

Well, duh. They're web admins, not mind-readers. If they can at least eliminate who they know to be bad, it's a start; they're doing what they can. How can you fault them for not being able to accomplish the impossible?

John Smith: Registered Sex Offender

lol.
#3 Z3r0 on 07 Dec 2006 - 14:44
rofl, what about the ones who haven't been caught yet.

This is great for publicity but really means FA.

Unless they start using some kind of retina scanning tech or fingerprinting or omfg microchips in the brain!

Problem solved if they just ban anyone under 16? they just need to devise a way of doing that

Here is the best way to Block Sex Offenders on MySpace

1). If you have a router setup add the following IP's to your Outbound Packet Filter settings.

You want to put these in as the Destination IP and the port is 80 for all of them.

63.208.226.219
63.208.226.24-63.208.226.28
63.208.226.40-63.208.226.43

Many routers have different interfaces so I cannot tell word for word how to do this for each router. So please read the instructions that came with your router it should explain how to do this. Try visiting the manufactures website if the instructions don't cover setting up packet filters.

2). If you don't have a router then you will need to modify the Hosts file on each computer by hand.

First, open the following file with Notepad. (Note: The Hosts file does not have a file extension, this is by design so don't give it a file extension because you think it needs one )

Note: You should make a backup of the Hosts file and put it somewhere safe in case you mess up.

Windows XP
C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetchosts

Windows 2000
C:WINNTsystem32driversetchosts

Windows 98
C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetchosts

Copy the following IP's...

# block myspace.com
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.219
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.24
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.25
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.28
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.40
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.41
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.42
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.43

Now paste them into the Hosts file after 127.0.0.1 localhost

Should look like this...

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

# block myspace.com
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.219
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.24
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.25
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.28
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.40
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.41
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.42
127.0.0.1 63.208.226.43

Then save the Hosts file and your done. Now you don't have to worry about it!!!!

MySpace is a joke and a waste of time. Unless your a 12 year old girl or 40 year old dude looking for a 12 year old girl. lol
#4.1 simpleyred on 07 Dec 2006 - 15:22
Such a useless post. I use myspace a lot to keep in contact with old school friends that moved away to uni etc and im neither a "12 year old girl" or a "40 year old dude looking for a 12 year old girl"

Hell yeah that is what email is for! Good post. I'll remember that next time one of my friends is trying to get me to join MySpace to "keep track of old friends."
#4.4 Enrickey on 07 Dec 2006 - 16:36
I just use Facebook, since I find it nicer than MySpace due to not being able to customize profiles, and it's easier to keep on on friends with the feeds.
#4.5 hotdog963al on 07 Dec 2006 - 20:44
Retarded.
I use myspace as a means of getting info across to a large number of people using "Bulletins".
I post bulletins about upcoming events, invitations and other useful stuff that might get ignored in an email.
It's great for photos to, it's nice to browse through your mates photos and be able to comment and stuff.
I've made a few mates through the service and it's actually really good for that, I used to hate it.
The site itself though is a pile of ****, it errors all the time and looks SO crap, like they rushed the whole thing.

I actually worked with a perv like that. He was 40 and wouldn't stop talking about how it'd be great to be able to pick up his girlfriend... from high school... there were soooo many times I wanted to stab him in the face for it.

Oh, and cheers to Myspace for making an attempt. Obviously there are ways to circumvent what they are doing, but it will at least discourage some.

Then again, they could be doing it to cover there asses. You know, in case someone tries to sue them for not-doing-anything-about-the-possibility-of-harboring-sex-offenders.
#5.1 Unwonted on 07 Dec 2006 - 15:59
Agree with your post 100%.
#6 C_Guy on 07 Dec 2006 - 15:29
If MySpace *shudder* were to block sex offenders and everyone else who uses the site to hunt people down then you'd be losing a good chunk of users...

...Until they registed with false information. Because I'm sure no one ever does that on the Internet.

Title should read "My Space to block known sex offenders."
(3 replies) #8 dmbandfan22 on 07 Dec 2006 - 15:51
so what's to stop them from going to the library or an internet cafe and using myspace from there?
#8.1 Joshie on 07 Dec 2006 - 16:01
No, see, it blocks them by personal info from signing up for an account...not by IP address.
#8.2 Shadrack on 07 Dec 2006 - 16:36
Yeah... and everyone knows that no one lies on their person info entry on an internet site.
#8.3 dmbandfan22 on 07 Dec 2006 - 18:51
they can pretend to be a lovely 18 year old guy if they want to.
#9 vetneufuse on 07 Dec 2006 - 16:39
um i dont see this working well, not because they would have to register under their known name, but what happens if someone else has the same name from the same area?! this will be likw WGA where it starts banning good people...
(1 reply) #10 +XP-RTM on 07 Dec 2006 - 16:59
they should just make people sign up with credit card #'s that way they cant fake it and children cant sign up, of course free lol (and with a really good secure web transaction)
#10.1 Joshie on 07 Dec 2006 - 17:23
Careful now. While I agree totally with your suggestion (I've wanted the whole cc# signup for MySpace for ages now), you're inviting the following pain:

Argument 1: But Myspace is a great way to reconnect with old acquaintances and classmates!
Response: Oh...so you're an adult? Then you wouldn't mind a free age verification with your credit card?
Argument 2: But Myspace is a great way for kids to keep in touch!
Response: Wait, but you just said...
Argument 3: Besides, kids can just steal their parents' credit cards!
Response: But it's not like sex offenders do that...they'd be more likely to use their own, and then they can be identified and barred from joining...
Argument 4: ???

How the hell can this work?

My name is Peter Phile, and live at 1 nowwhere, sometown

How can they tell, downloading p*rn, talking dirty in a chat room? (We are all screwed!

I wonder how much was spent on this project? Waste of time. What is the point of letting these people out, only to spend billions on keeping an eye on them? Does anyone else think the world is going a bit backwards?
#11.1 Joshie on 07 Dec 2006 - 17:26
It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to let someone out of prison--a place that supposedly 'reforms' people--and then treat them like they haven't changed at all for the rest of their life. I mean, maybe for a period of time (like parole?) would be one thing. But for the rest of their life? Just think, two 13 year olds bang each other, both become sex offenders, and when they're 80 years old, get their houses egged by a passing over-zealous soccer mom freak.

Exactly. Everyone should just go to prison for life if people are allowed to do this.
#12 Aahz on 07 Dec 2006 - 17:36
It'll be a check box which reads "I certify that I am not a child molester" and then you are good to register.
#13 Croquant on 07 Dec 2006 - 17:41
Well, this will block the dumb sex offenders, but not the smart ones. The smart ones never registered under their identity ion the first place. Unless the cops go around and get every known sex offender's MAC adresses and ISP information it would be impossible to tell who's who. Even then, what's to stop a paedophile from simply buying a new network card, changing ISPs, and getting a new MySpace account under a fake ID?
My main concern is that it will block people who aren't sex offenders at all. The cops do make mistakes, you know.
#14 Landlocked on 07 Dec 2006 - 19:04
Here's what I would do if I were Rupert...and wanted to protect myself from lawsuits and bad press.

All accounts must be linked to a driver's license or state ID to create an adult account...or an account for a child acting as the parent. Sure, it invades privacy a bit, but this will keep kids who aren't being monitored/there without consent from getting online and will red flag adults who are sex offenders.

Don't have an ID? Tuff luck. Get a life and get one. Don't wanted to get busted for illegal posts? Fine, don't do them.
#15 eAi on 07 Dec 2006 - 20:27
This won't work, they can't exactly have a "tick this box if you're a sex offender" can they? If anything it'll give a false sense of security and make people believe its safe to use myspace.
#16 mrmckeb on 08 Dec 2006 - 00:57
As much as I hate sex offenders, this sounds like it's against the law. People shouldn't be punished for crimes after they have been punished.......

I have a friend who's a registered sex offender. He had to register after getting busted for drunk in public, and peeing behind a bar in Arkansas. Anyway, if the real chester the molester types want to get on myspace, they will find a way. And there will always be little teeny boppers willing to get frisky by talking dirty with them. It's the nature of the beast. The only thing that might help is for the authorities to prohibit ISP's from providing access to homes on a registered sex offenders address data base. If you live in the U.S. and don't think you have sex offenders living in your neighborhood, go to criminalcheck.com and punch in your zip code. You might be in for a nasty surprise. I checked my neighborhood, but there weren't any women on the list. Oh well.........
