A U.K. governance organization will review The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as it tries to increase transparency after criticism of its close U.S. government ties. The report from One World Trust will be made public when it's completed next year, said Paul Levins, ICANN's executive officer and vice president of corporate affairs. ICANN, a private, nonprofit organization that controls the administration of the DNS (domain name system), is reworking its accountability practices, Levins said.
"Frankly, the community has told us this is an issue we need to deal with," Levins said. In October, ICANN started a consultation to develop new management operating principles, Levins said. ICANN also plans to document its board meetings better and revamp its Web site to make its 12,000 pages more accessible. The organization, based in Marina del Ray, California, falls under the oversight of the U.S. Commerce Department, which has led to criticism that the U.S. government wielded too much influence over the Internet's development. Take the .xxx domain for example - it was aproved by ICANN but they were pressured into revoking it by the US Govt.
own and leave this one alone. Name ONE thing the U.N. (useless nations) has done right? Absolutely NOTHING.
Put the UN in "charge" of the internet, and watch the virtual freedom of speech disappear overnight.
Yes, I'm one of "those" Americans. It's OUR internet, we INVENTED it (thanks to DARPA research), and if the rest of
the world doesn't like it, bite me.
Other countries HAVE done their own thing, creating their own top level domains (.ca, .cn, .de, .uk, etc) yet even though they have NOTHING to do with the US, they still fall under the control of ICANN. I don't care if the US keeps control of .com, .net, .us, whatever they want, but stuff like blocking .xxx shows that their ties to the US gov't need to go.
How about I name seven instead?
IAEA - International Atomic Energy Agency
ICC - International Criminal Court
ITLOS - International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea
UNHCR - Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
UNICEF - United Nations Children's Fund
WFP - World Food Programme
UNAIDS - Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS
Too much influence? The US created teh internets.
