Microsoft's Windows Vista has undergone a series of security tests against the top malware threats as reported by Sophos on November 30. The results, according to Jim Allchin, were a success. A clean install of Windows Vista was immune to all ten of the malware threats. However, third-party email applications, including Microsoft’s Outlook, did not fare so well. Vista protected the user against running executables of known malware threats eight out of ten times. The two threats that evaded Vista’s barriers are known as Bagle-Zip and Mydoom-O. Microsoft said that because the executables were found in .zip attachments, Windows Vista was unable to alert the user they had executed a malware threat. On the other hand, Windows Mail, which is available with Vista, blocked all .zip attachments.

Good to see security is slowly getting better.

"A virus can hide in an email attachment? Who'd a thunk it?"

The above was overheard at the MS campus recently...

Does anyone still think that AV software is a thing of the past? Still want to blindly trust MS to do proper security for you? It may be better, but it's not the malware free paradise that MS will have you believe. I feel safer with XP w/ security apps than I ever would with Vista alone.

Which is kind of odd, because with just Vista alone, NONE of the top 10 Malware attacks succeeded. The only ones that DID came through programs not part of Vista, such as Outlook (Yes I know, Outlook is from MS, but it's NOT part of Vista). Even those that did, first required you to open the ZIP attachment, and then run the executible inside.

Anyone stupid enough to do that, is also stupid enough to click "IGNORE" when their AV software throws a wobbler...

Vista alone is pretty secure against known Malware. Vista + security apps = FAR better than XP + security apps (As long as it's not Symantec or McAfee! :p )

so when they say vista blocks malware are they talking about the UAC catching the exe files or are they talking about windows defender catching them through a scan?
